DRB ² et il avait deux femmes : le nom de l'une était Anne*, et le nom de la seconde, Peninna. Et Peninna avait des enfants, mais Anne n'avait pas d'enfants.

KJV ² And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

VULC ² et habuit duas uxores, nomen uni Anna, et nomen secundæ Phenenna. Fueruntque Phenennæ filii : Annæ autem non erant liberi.

WLC ² וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֔ים שֵׁ֤ם אַחַת֙ חַנָּ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פְּנִנָּ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י לִפְנִנָּה֙ יְלָדִ֔ים וּלְחַנָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין יְלָדִֽים׃

DRB ³ Et cet homme montait chaque année de sa ville pour adorer l'Éternel des armées et lui sacrifier à Silo ; et là étaient les deux fils d'Éli, Hophni et Phinées, sacrificateurs de l'Éternel.

KJV ³ And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

VULC ³ Et ascendebat vir ille de civitate sua statutis diebus, ut adoraret et sacrificaret Domino exercituum in Silo. Erant autem ibi duo filii Heli, Ophni et Phinees, sacerdotes Domini.

WLC ³ וְעָלָה֩ הָאִ֨ישׁ הַה֤וּא מֵֽעִירוֹ֙ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֔ימָה לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֧ת וְלִזְבֹּ֛חַ לַיהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת בְּשִׁלֹ֑ה וְשָׁ֞ם שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־ עֵלִ֗י חָפְנִי֙ וּפִ֣נְחָ֔ס כֹּהֲנִ֖ים לַיהוָֽה׃

DRB ⁴ Et il arriva que, le jour où Elkana sacrifia, il donna des portions à Peninna, sa femme, et à chacun de ses fils et de ses filles ;

KJV ⁴ And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

VULC ⁴ Venit ergo dies, et immolavit Elcana, deditque Phenennæ uxori suæ, et cunctis filiis ejus et filiabus, partes :

WLC ⁴ וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח אֶלְקָנָ֑ה וְנָתַ֞ן לִפְנִנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּֽלְכָל־ בָּנֶ֛יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ מָנֽוֹת׃

DRB ⁵ mais à Anne il donna une portion double, car il aimait Anne ; mais l'Éternel avait fermé sa matrice.

KJV ⁵ But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.

VULC ⁵ Annæ autem dedit partem unam tristis, quia Annam diligebat. Dominus autem concluserat vulvam ejus.

WLC ⁵ וּלְחַנָּ֕ה יִתֵּ֛ן מָנָ֥ה אַחַ֖ת אַפָּ֑יִם כִּ֤י אֶת־ חַנָּה֙ אָהֵ֔ב וַֽיהוָ֖ה סָגַ֥ר רַחְמָֽהּ׃

DRB ⁶ Et son ennemie la chagrinait aigrement, afin de la pousser à l'irritation, parce que l'Éternel avait fermé sa matrice.

KJV ⁶ And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.

VULC ⁶ Affligebat quoque eam æmula ejus, et vehementer angebat, in tantum ut exprobraret quod Dominus conclusisset vulvam ejus :

WLC ⁶ וְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּה צָֽרָתָהּ֙ גַּם־ כַּ֔עַס בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְּעִמָ֑הּ כִּֽי־ סָגַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בְּעַ֥ד רַחְמָֽהּ׃

DRB ⁷ Et [Elkana] faisait ainsi d'année en année. Chaque fois qu'elle montait à la maison de l'Éternel, [Peninna] la chagrinait ainsi ; et elle pleurait, et ne mangeait pas.

KJV ⁷ And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

VULC ⁷ sicque faciebat per singulos annos : cum redeunte tempore ascenderent ad templum Domini, et sic provocabat eam : porro illa flebat, et non capiebat cibum.

WLC ⁷ וְכֵ֨ן יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה שָׁנָ֣ה בְשָׁנָ֗ה מִדֵּ֤י עֲלֹתָהּ֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה כֵּ֖ן תַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּה וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תֹאכַֽל׃

DRB ⁸ Et Elkana, son mari, lui dit : Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu ? et pourquoi ne manges-tu pas ? et pourquoi ton cœur est-il chagrin ? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas mieux pour toi que dix fils ?

KJV ⁸ Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

VULC ⁸ Dixit ergo ei Elcana vir suus : Anna, cur fles ? et quare non comedis ? et quam ob rem affligitur cor tuum ? numquid non ego melior tibi sum, quam decem filii ?

DRB ⁹ Et Anne se leva, après qu'on eut mangé à Silo, et après qu'on eut bu ; (et Éli, le sacrificateur, était assis sur un siège près de l'un des poteaux du temple de l'Éternel) ;

KJV ⁹ So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.

VULC ⁹ Surrexit autem Anna postquam comederat et biberat in Silo. Et Heli sacerdote sedente super sellam ante postes templi Domini,

WLC ⁹ וַתָּ֣קָם חַנָּ֔ה אַחֲרֵ֛י אָכְלָ֥ה בְשִׁלֹ֖ה וְאַחֲרֵ֣י שָׁתֹ֑ה וְעֵלִ֣י הַכֹּהֵ֗ן יֹשֵׁב֙ עַל־ הַכִּסֵּ֔א עַל־ מְזוּזַ֖ת הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁰ et elle avait l'amertume dans l'âme, et elle pria l'Éternel et pleura abondamment.

KJV ¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

VULC ¹⁰ cum esset Anna amaro animo, oravit ad Dominum, flens largiter,

WLC ¹⁰ וְהִ֖יא מָ֣רַת נָ֑פֶשׁ וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל עַל־ יְהוָ֖ה וּבָכֹ֥ה תִבְכֶּֽה׃

DRB ¹¹ Et elle fit un vœu, et dit : Éternel des armées ! Si tu veux regarder à l'affliction de ta servante, et si tu te souviens de moi et n'oublies pas ta servante, et que tu donnes à ta servante un enfant mâle, je le donnerai à l'Éternel [pour] tous les jours de sa vie ; et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.

KJV ¹¹ And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

DRB ¹² Et il arriva que, comme elle priait longuement devant l'Éternel, Éli observa sa bouche.

KJV ¹² And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

VULC ¹² Factum est autem, cum illa multiplicaret preces coram Domino, ut Heli observaret os ejus.

WLC ¹² וְהָיָה֙ כִּ֣י הִרְבְּתָ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְעֵלִ֖י שֹׁמֵ֥ר אֶת־ פִּֽיהָ׃

DRB ¹³ Et Anne parlait dans son cœur ; ses lèvres seulement remuaient, mais on n'entendait pas sa voix ; et Éli pensa qu'elle était ivre.

KJV ¹³ Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

VULC ¹³ Porro Anna loquebatur in corde suo, tantumque labia illius movebantur, et vox penitus non audiebatur. Æstimavit ergo eam Heli temulentam,

WLC ¹³ וְחַנָּ֗ה הִ֚יא מְדַבֶּ֣רֶת עַל־ לִבָּ֔הּ רַ֚ק שְׂפָתֶ֣יהָ נָּע֔וֹת וְקוֹלָ֖הּ לֹ֣א יִשָּׁמֵ֑עַ וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ עֵלִ֖י לְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁴ Et Éli lui dit : Jusques à quand seras-tu ivre ? Ôte ton vin d'avec toi.

KJV ¹⁴ And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

VULC ¹⁴ dixitque ei : Usquequo ebria eris ? digere paulisper vinum, quo mades.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ עֵלִ֔י עַד־ מָתַ֖י תִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑ין הָסִ֥ירִי אֶת־ יֵינֵ֖ךְ מֵעָלָֽיִךְ׃

DRB ¹⁵ Et Anne répondit et dit : Non, mon Seigneur ; je suis une femme qui a l'esprit accablé ; je n'ai bu ni vin ni boisson forte, mais je répandais mon âme devant l'Éternel.

KJV ¹⁵ And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

VULC ¹⁵ Respondens Anna : Nequaquam, inquit, domine mi : nam mulier infelix nimis ego sum : vinumque et omne quod inebriare potest, non bibi, sed effudi animam meam in conspectu Domini.

WLC ¹⁵ וַתַּ֨עַן חַנָּ֤ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֲדֹנִ֔י אִשָּׁ֤ה קְשַׁת־ ר֙וּחַ֙ אָנֹ֔כִי וְיַ֥יִן וְשֵׁכָ֖ר לֹ֣א שָׁתִ֑יתִי וָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ אֶת־ נַפְשִׁ֖י לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁶ Ne mets pas ta servante au rang d'une fille de Bélial* ; car c'est dans la grandeur de ma plainte et de mon chagrin que j'ai parlé jusqu'à présent.

KJV ¹⁶ Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

VULC ¹⁶ Ne reputes ancillam tuam quasi unam de filiabus Belial : quia ex multitudine doloris et mœroris mei locuta sum usque in præsens.

WLC ¹⁶ אַל־ תִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־ אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ לִפְנֵ֖י בַּת־ בְּלִיָּ֑עַל כִּֽי־ מֵרֹ֥ב שִׂיחִ֛י וְכַעְסִ֖י דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי עַד־ הֵֽנָּה׃

DRB ¹⁷ Et Éli répondit et dit : Va en paix ; et que le Dieu d'Israël t'accorde la demande que tu lui as faite !

KJV ¹⁷ Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

VULC ¹⁷ Tunc Heli ait ei : Vade in pace : et Deus Israël det tibi petitionem tuam quam rogasti eum.

WLC ¹⁷ וַיַּ֧עַן עֵלִ֛י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לְכִ֣י לְשָׁל֑וֹם וֵאלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל יִתֵּן֙ אֶת־ שֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתְּ מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃

DRB ¹⁸ Et elle dit : Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux ! Et la femme s'en alla son chemin ; et elle mangea, et elle n'eut plus le même visage.

KJV ¹⁸ And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

VULC ¹⁸ Et illa dixit : Utinam inveniat ancilla tua gratiam in oculis tuis. Et abiit mulier in viam suam, et comedit, vultusque illius non sunt amplius in diversa mutati.

WLC ¹⁸ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר תִּמְצָ֧א שִׁפְחָתְךָ֛ חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וַתֵּ֨לֶךְ הָאִשָּׁ֤ה לְדַרְכָּהּ֙ וַתֹּאכַ֔ל וּפָנֶ֥יהָ לֹא־ הָיוּ־ לָ֖הּ עֽוֹד׃

DRB ¹⁹ Et ils se levèrent de bonne heure le matin, et se prosternèrent devant l'Éternel ; et ils s'en retournèrent et vinrent dans leur maison, à Rama. Et Elkana connut Anne, sa femme ; et l'Éternel se souvint d'elle.

KJV ¹⁹ And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

VULC ¹⁹ Et surrexerunt mane, et adoraverunt coram Domino : reversique sunt, et venerunt in domum suam Ramatha.
Cognovit autem Elcana Annam uxorem suam : et recordatus est ejus Dominus.

WLC ¹⁹ וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ בַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּשֻׁ֛בוּ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־ בֵּיתָ֖ם הָרָמָ֑תָה וַיֵּ֤דַע אֶלְקָנָה֙ אֶת־ חַנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיִּֽזְכְּרֶ֖הָ יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ²⁰ Et il arriva que, quand les jours furent révolus, Anne, ayant conçu, enfanta un fils ; et elle appela son nom Samuel* : car je l'ai demandé à l'Éternel.

KJV ²⁰ Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

VULC ²⁰ Et factum est post circulum dierum, concepit Anna, et peperit filium : vocavitque nomen ejus Samuel, eo quod a Domino postulasset eum.

WLC ²⁰ וַיְהִי֙ לִתְקֻפ֣וֹת הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתַּ֥הַר חַנָּ֖ה וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֤א אֶת־ שְׁמוֹ֙ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י מֵיְהוָ֖ה שְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃

DRB ²¹ Et Elkana, son mari, monta avec toute sa maison pour sacrifier à l'Éternel le sacrifice annuel et son vœu.

KJV ²¹ And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

VULC ²¹ Ascendit autem vir ejus Elcana, et omnis domus ejus, ut immolaret Domino hostiam solemnem, et votum suum.

WLC ²¹ וַיַּ֛עַל הָאִ֥ישׁ אֶלְקָנָ֖ה וְכָל־ בֵּית֑וֹ לִזְבֹּ֧חַ לַֽיהוָ֛ה אֶת־ זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִ֖ים וְאֶת־ נִדְרֽוֹ׃

DRB ²² Mais Anne ne monta pas, car elle dit à son mari : [J'attendrai] jusqu'à ce que l'enfant soit sevré ; alors je le mènerai, afin qu'il paraisse devant l'Éternel et qu'il habite là pour toujours.

KJV ²² But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.

VULC ²² Et Anna non ascendit : dixit enim viro suo : Non vadam donec ablactetur infans, et ducam eum, ut appareat ante conspectum Domini, et maneat ibi jugiter.

WLC ²² וְחַנָּ֖ה לֹ֣א עָלָ֑תָה כִּֽי־ אָמְרָ֣ה לְאִישָׁ֗הּ עַ֣ד יִגָּמֵ֤ל הַנַּ֙עַר֙ וַהֲבִאֹתִ֗יו וְנִרְאָה֙ אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְיָ֥שַׁב שָׁ֖ם עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃

DRB ²³ Et Elkana, son mari, lui dit : Fais ce qui est bon à tes yeux, demeure jusqu'à ce que tu l'aies sevré ; seulement, que l'Éternel accomplisse sa parole ! Et la femme demeura, et elle allaita son fils jusqu'à ce qu'elle l'eût sevré. *

KJV ²³ And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

VULC ²³ Et ait ei Elcana vir suus : Fac quod bonum tibi videtur, et mane donec ablactes eum : precorque ut impleat Dominus verbum suum. Mansit ergo mulier, et lactavit filium suum, donec amoveret eum a lacte.

WLC ²³ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהּ֩ אֶלְקָנָ֨ה אִישָׁ֜הּ עֲשִׂ֧י הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינַ֗יִךְ שְׁבִי֙ עַד־ גָּמְלֵ֣ךְ אֹת֔וֹ אַ֛ךְ יָקֵ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ דְּבָר֑וֹ וַתֵּ֤שֶׁב הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וַתֵּ֣ינֶק אֶת־ בְּנָ֔הּ עַד־ גָּמְלָ֖הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

DRB ²⁴ Et sitôt qu'elle l'eut sevré, elle l'emmena avec elle, avec trois jeunes taureaux, et un épha de farine et une outre de vin ; et elle le mena à la maison de l'Éternel à Silo ; et l'enfant* était très jeune.

KJV ²⁴ And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.

VULC ²⁴ Et adduxit eum secum, postquam ablactaverat, in vitulis tribus, et tribus modiis farinæ, et amphora vini, et adduxit eum ad domum Domini in Silo. Puer autem erat adhuc infantulus :

DRB ²⁵ Et ils égorgèrent le taureau, et ils amenèrent le jeune garçon à Éli.

KJV ²⁵ And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

VULC ²⁵ et immolaverunt vitulum, et obtulerunt puerum Heli.

WLC ²⁵ וַֽיִּשְׁחֲט֖וּ אֶת־ הַפָּ֑ר וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־ הַנַּ֖עַר אֶל־ עֵלִֽי׃

DRB ²⁶ Et elle dit : Ah, mon seigneur ! ton âme est vivante, mon seigneur, je suis la femme qui se tenait ici près de toi pour prier l'Éternel.

KJV ²⁶ And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

VULC ²⁶ Et ait Anna : Obsecro mi domine, vivit anima tua, domine : ego sum illa mulier, quæ steti coram te hic orans Dominum.

WLC ²⁶ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י חֵ֥י נַפְשְׁךָ֖ אֲדֹנִ֑י אֲנִ֣י הָאִשָּׁ֗ה הַנִּצֶּ֤בֶת עִמְּכָה֙ בָּזֶ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל אֶל־ יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ²⁷ J'ai prié pour cet enfant, et l'Éternel m'a accordé la demande que je lui ai faite.

KJV ²⁷ For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

VULC ²⁷ Pro puero isto oravi, et dedit mihi Dominus petitionem meam quam postulavi eum.

WLC ²⁷ אֶל־ הַנַּ֥עַר הַזֶּ֖ה הִתְפַּלָּ֑לְתִּי וַיִּתֵּ֨ן יְהוָ֥ה לִי֙ אֶת־ שְׁאֵ֣לָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתִּי מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃

DRB ²⁸ Et aussi, moi je l'ai prêté à l'Éternel ; [pour] tous les jours de sa vie*, il est prêté à l'Éternel. Et il se prosterna là devant l'Éternel.

KJV ²⁸ Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

VULC ²⁸ Idcirco et ego commodavi eum Domino cunctis diebus quibus fuerit commodatus Domino. Et adoraverunt ibi Dominum.
Et oravit Anna, et ait :

WLC ²⁸ וְגַ֣ם אָנֹכִ֗י הִשְׁאִלְתִּ֙הוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה כָּל־ הַיָּמִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֔ה ה֥וּא שָׁא֖וּל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ שָׁ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃

DRB ¹ Et Anne pria, et dit : Mon cœur s'égaie en l'Éternel ; ma corne est élevée en* l'Éternel ; ma bouche s'ouvre sur mes ennemis, car je me réjouis en ton salut.

KJV ¹ And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.

VULC ¹ [Exsultavit cor meum in Domino,
et exaltatum est cornu meum in Deo meo ;
dilatatum est os meum super inimicos meos :
quia lætata sum in salutari tuo.

DRB ² Nul n'est saint comme l'Éternel, car il n'y en a point d'autre que toi ; et il n'y a pas de rocher comme notre Dieu.

KJV ² There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

VULC ² Non est sanctus, ut est Dominus,
neque enim est alius extra te,
et non est fortis sicut Deus noster.

WLC ² אֵין־ קָד֥וֹשׁ כַּיהוָ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין בִּלְתֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר כֵּאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃

DRB ³ Ne multipliez pas vos paroles hautaines ; que l'insolence ne sorte pas de votre bouche ; car l'Éternel est un *Dieu de connaissance, et par lui les actions sont pesées.

KJV ³ Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

VULC ³ Nolite multiplicare loqui sublimia gloriantes ;
recedant vetera de ore vestro :
quia Deus scientiarum Dominus est,
et ipsi præparantur cogitationes.

WLC ³ אַל־ תַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה גְבֹהָ֔ה יֵצֵ֥א עָתָ֖ק מִפִּיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י אֵ֤ל דֵּעוֹת֙ יְהוָ֔ה נִתְכְּנ֖וּ עֲלִלֽוֹת׃

DRB ⁴ L'arc des puissants est brisé, et ceux qui chancelaient se ceignent de force.

KJV ⁴ The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.

VULC ⁴ Arcus fortium superatus est,
et infirmi accincti sunt robore.

WLC ⁴ קֶ֥שֶׁת גִּבֹּרִ֖ים חַתִּ֑ים וְנִכְשָׁלִ֖ים אָ֥זְרוּ חָֽיִל׃

DRB ⁵ Ceux qui étaient rassasiés se sont loués pour du pain ; et ceux qui étaient affamés ont cessé de l'être ; même la stérile en enfante sept, et celle qui avait beaucoup de fils est devenue languissante.

KJV ⁵ They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.

VULC ⁵ Repleti prius, pro panibus se locaverunt :
et famelici saturati sunt,
donec sterilis peperit plurimos :

WLC ⁵ שְׂבֵעִ֤ים בַּלֶּ֙חֶם֙ נִשְׂכָּ֔רוּ וּרְעֵבִ֖ים חָדֵ֑לּוּ עַד־ עֲקָרָה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה שִׁבְעָ֔ה וְרַבַּ֥ת בָּנִ֖ים אֻמְלָֽלָה׃

DRB ⁶ L'Éternel fait mourir et fait vivre ; il fait descendre au shéol* et [en] fait monter.

KJV ⁶ The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

VULC ⁶ Dominus mortificat et vivificat ;
deducit ad inferos et reducit.

DRB ⁷ L'Éternel appauvrit et enrichit ; il abaisse, et il élève aussi.

KJV ⁷ The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.

DRB ⁸ De la poussière il fait lever le misérable, de dessus le fumier il élève le pauvre, pour les faire asseoir avec les nobles : et il leur donne en héritage un trône de gloire ; car les piliers de la terre sont à l'Éternel, et sur eux il a posé le monde.

KJV ⁸ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.

DRB ⁹ Il garde les pieds de ses saints*, et les méchants se taisent dans les ténèbres ; car l'homme ne prévaut pas** par sa force.

KJV ⁹ He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

VULC ⁹ Pedes sanctorum suorum servabit,
et impii in tenebris conticescent :
quia non in fortitudine sua roborabitur vir.

WLC ⁹ רַגְלֵ֤י יִשְׁמֹ֔ר וּרְשָׁעִ֖ים בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יִדָּ֑מּוּ כִּֽי־ לֹ֥א בְכֹ֖חַ יִגְבַּר־ אִֽישׁ׃

DRB ¹⁰ Ceux qui contestent contre l'Éternel seront brisés ; il tonnera sur eux dans les cieux. L'Éternel jugera les bouts de la terre, et il donnera la force à son roi, et élèvera la corne de son oint.

KJV ¹⁰ The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

et super ipsos in cælis tonabit.
Dominus judicabit fines terræ,

DRB ¹¹ Et Elkana s'en alla à Rama, dans sa maison ; et le jeune garçon servait l'Éternel en la présence d'Éli, le sacrificateur.

KJV ¹¹ And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest.

DRB ¹² Et les fils d'Éli étaient des fils de Bélial, ils ne connaissaient pas l'Éternel.

KJV ¹² Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.

VULC ¹² Porro filii Heli, filii Belial, nescientes Dominum,

WLC ¹² וּבְנֵ֥י עֵלִ֖י בְּנֵ֣י בְלִיָּ֑עַל לֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּ אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ¹³ Et la coutume des sacrificateurs à l'égard du peuple [était celle-ci] : quand quelqu'un sacrifiait un sacrifice, le serviteur* du sacrificateur venait, lorsqu'on faisait bouillir la chair, ayant en sa main une fourchette à trois dents,

KJV ¹³ And the priest's custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;

VULC ¹³ neque officium sacerdotum ad populum : sed quicumque immolasset victimam, veniebat puer sacerdotis, dum coquerentur carnes, et habebat fuscinulam tridentem in manu sua,

WLC ¹³ וּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים אֶת־ הָעָ֑ם כָּל־ אִ֞ישׁ זֹבֵ֣חַ זֶ֗בַח וּבָ֨א נַ֤עַר הַכֹּהֵן֙ כְּבַשֵּׁ֣ל הַבָּשָׂ֔ר וְהַמַּזְלֵ֛ג שְׁלֹ֥שׁ־ הַשִּׁנַּ֖יִם בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

DRB ¹⁴ et il piquait dans la chaudière, ou dans le chaudron, ou dans la marmite, ou dans le pot : le sacrificateur en prenait tout ce que la fourchette amenait en haut. Ils faisaient ainsi à tous ceux d'Israël qui venaient là, à Silo.

KJV ¹⁴ And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.

DRB ¹⁵ Même, avant qu'on eût fait fumer la graisse, le serviteur* du sacrificateur venait, et disait à l'homme qui sacrifiait : Donne de la chair à rôtir pour le sacrificateur ; et il ne prendra pas de toi de la chair bouillie, mais [de la chair] crue.

KJV ¹⁵ Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

DRB ¹⁶ Si l'homme lui disait : On va d'abord faire fumer la graisse, puis tu prendras selon le désir de ton âme, alors il [lui] disait : Non, car tu en donneras maintenant ; sinon, j'en prendrai de force.

KJV ¹⁶ And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.

DRB ¹⁷ Et le péché de ces jeunes hommes fut très grand devant l'Éternel ; car les hommes méprisaient l'offrande* de l'Éternel.

KJV ¹⁷ Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.

DRB ¹⁸ Et Samuel servait devant l'Éternel, jeune garçon, ceint d'un éphod de lin.

KJV ¹⁸ But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.

VULC ¹⁸ Samuel autem ministrabat ante faciem Domini, puer accinctus ephod lineo.

WLC ¹⁸ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל מְשָׁרֵ֖ת אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה נַ֕עַר חָג֖וּר אֵפ֥וֹד בָּֽד׃

DRB ¹⁹ Et sa mère lui faisait une petite robe et la lui apportait d'année en année quand elle montait avec son mari pour sacrifier le sacrifice annuel.

KJV ¹⁹ Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

WLC ¹⁹ וּמְעִ֤יל קָטֹן֙ תַּעֲשֶׂה־ לּ֣וֹ אִמּ֔וֹ וְהַעַלְתָ֥ה ל֖וֹ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֑ימָה בַּֽעֲלוֹתָהּ֙ אֶת־ אִישָׁ֔הּ לִזְבֹּ֖חַ אֶת־ זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִֽים׃

DRB ²⁰ Et Éli bénit Elkana et sa femme, et dit : Que l'Éternel te donne des enfants* de cette femme, à la place du prêt qui a été fait à l'Éternel ! Et ils s'en retournèrent chez lui.

KJV ²⁰ And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.

VULC ²⁰ Et benedixit Heli Elcanæ et uxori ejus : dixitque ei : Reddat tibi Dominus semen de muliere hac, pro fœnore quod commodasti Domino. Et abierunt in locum suum.

WLC ²⁰ וּבֵרַ֨ךְ עֵלִ֜י אֶת־ אֶלְקָנָ֣ה וְאֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וְאָמַר֙ יָשֵׂם֩ יְהוָ֨ה לְךָ֥ זֶ֙רַע֙ מִן־ הָאִשָּׁ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את תַּ֚חַת הַשְּׁאֵלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖ל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וְהָלְכ֖וּ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃

DRB ²¹ Et l'Éternel visita Anne, et elle conçut, et enfanta trois fils et deux filles ; et le jeune garçon Samuel grandissait auprès de l'Éternel.

KJV ²¹ And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

VULC ²¹ Visitavit ergo Dominus Annam, et concepit, et peperit tres filios, et duas filias : et magnificatus est puer Samuel apud Dominum.

DRB ²² Et Éli était fort âgé, et il apprit tout ce que ses fils faisaient à l'égard de tout Israël, et qu'ils couchaient avec les femmes qui servaient* à l'entrée de la tente d'assignation.

KJV ²² Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

DRB ²³ Et il leur dit : Pourquoi faites-vous des actions comme celles-là ? Car, de tout le peuple, j'apprends vos méchantes actions.

KJV ²³ And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.

VULC ²³ et dixit eis : Quare facitis res hujuscemodi quas ego audio, res pessimas, ab omni populo ?

WLC ²³ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם לָ֥מָּה תַעֲשׂ֖וּן כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֤י שֹׁמֵ֙עַ֙ אֶת־ דִּבְרֵיכֶ֣ם רָעִ֔ים מֵאֵ֖ת כָּל־ הָעָ֥ם אֵֽלֶּה׃

DRB ²⁴ Non, mes fils ; car ce que j'entends dire n'est pas bon : vous entraînez à la transgression le peuple de l'Éternel.

KJV ²⁴ Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD's people to transgress.

VULC ²⁴ Nolite, filii mei : non enim est bona fama quam ego audio, ut transgredi faciatis populum Domini.

WLC ²⁴ אַ֖ל בָּנָ֑י כִּ֠י לֽוֹא־ טוֹבָ֤ה הַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָנֹכִ֣י שֹׁמֵ֔עַ מַעֲבִרִ֖ים עַם־ יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ²⁵ Si un homme a péché contre un homme, Dieu le jugera* ; mais si un homme pèche contre l'Éternel, qui priera pour lui ? Mais ils n'écoutèrent pas la voix de leur père, car c'était le bon plaisir de l'Éternel de les faire mourir.

KJV ²⁵ If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

VULC ²⁵ Si peccaverit vir in virum, placari ei potest Deus : si autem in Dominum peccaverit vir, quis orabit pro eo ? Et non audierunt vocem patris sui : quia voluit Dominus occidere eos.

WLC ²⁵ אִם־ יֶחֱטָ֨א אִ֤ישׁ לְאִישׁ֙ וּפִֽלְל֣וֹ אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאִ֤ם לַֽיהוָה֙ יֶֽחֱטָא־ אִ֔ישׁ מִ֖י יִתְפַּלֶּל־ ל֑וֹ וְלֹ֤א יִשְׁמְעוּ֙ לְק֣וֹל אֲבִיהֶ֔ם כִּֽי־ חָפֵ֥ץ יְהוָ֖ה לַהֲמִיתָֽם׃

DRB ²⁷ Et un homme de Dieu vint vers Éli, et lui dit : Ainsi dit l'Éternel : Je me suis clairement révélé à la maison de ton père, quand ils étaient en Égypte dans la maison du Pharaon,

KJV ²⁷ And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house?

VULC ²⁷ Venit autem vir Dei ad Heli, et ait ad eum : Hæc dicit Dominus : Numquid non aperte revelatus sum domui patris tui, cum essent in Ægypto in domo Pharaonis ?

WLC ²⁷ וַיָּבֹ֥א אִישׁ־ אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־ עֵלִ֑י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הֲנִגְלֹ֤ה נִגְלֵ֙יתִי֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ בִּֽהְיוֹתָ֥ם בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם לְבֵ֥ית פַּרְעֹֽה׃

DRB ²⁸ et je l'ai choisi d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël, pour être mon sacrificateur, pour offrir* [des sacrifices] sur mon autel, pour faire fumer l'encens, pour porter l'éphod devant moi ; et j'ai donné à la maison de ton père tous les sacrifices des fils d'Israël faits par feu.

KJV ²⁸ And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?

VULC ²⁸ Et elegi eum ex omnibus tribubus Israël mihi in sacerdotem, ut ascenderet ad altare meum, et adoleret mihi incensum, et portaret ephod coram me : et dedi domui patris tui omnia de sacrificiis filiorum Israël.

DRB ²⁹ Pourquoi foulez-vous aux pieds mon sacrifice et mon offrande, que j'ai commandé [de faire] dans ma demeure ? Et tu honores tes fils plus que moi, pour vous engraisser des prémices de toutes les offrandes d'Israël, mon peuple.

KJV ²⁹ Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

VULC ²⁹ Quare calce abjecistis victimam meam, et munera mea quæ præcepi ut offerrentur in templo : et magis honorasti filios tuos quam me, ut comederetis primitias omnis sacrificii Israël populi mei ?

DRB ³⁰ C'est pourquoi l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, dit* : J'avais bien dit : Ta maison et la maison de ton père marcheront devant moi à toujours ; mais maintenant l'Éternel dit* : Que cela soit loin de moi ; car ceux qui m'honorent, je les honorerai ; et ceux qui me méprisent seront en petite estime.

KJV ³⁰ Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

DRB ³¹ Voici, les jours viennent que je couperai ton bras et le bras de la maison de ton père, de sorte qu'il n'y aura plus de vieillard dans ta maison.

KJV ³¹ Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.

VULC ³¹ Ecce dies veniunt, et præcidam brachium tuum, et brachium domus patris tui, ut non sit senex in domo tua.

DRB ³² Et tu verras un adversaire [établi dans ma] demeure, dans tout le* bien qui aura été fait à Israël ; et il n'y aura plus de vieillard dans ta maison à jamais.

KJV ³² And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.

DRB ³³ Et celui des tiens que je ne retrancherai pas d'auprès de mon autel, sera pour consumer tes yeux et attrister ton âme ; et tout l'accroissement de ta maison : - ils mourront à la fleur de l'âge.

KJV ³³ And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.

VULC ³³ Verumtamen non auferam penitus virum ex te ab altari meo : sed ut deficiant oculi tui, et tabescat anima tua : et pars magna domus tuæ morietur cum ad virilem ætatem venerit.

DRB ³⁴ Et ceci t'en sera le signe : ce qui arrivera à tes deux fils, Hophni et Phinées ; ils mourront tous deux en un seul jour.

KJV ³⁴ And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.

VULC ³⁴ Hoc autem erit tibi signum, quod venturum est duobus filiis tuis, Ophni et Phinees : in die uno morientur ambo.

WLC ³⁴ וְזֶה־ לְּךָ֣ הָא֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָבֹא֙ אֶל־ שְׁנֵ֣י בָנֶ֔יךָ אֶל־ חָפְנִ֖י וּפִֽינְחָ֑ס בְּי֥וֹם אֶחָ֖ד יָמ֥וּתוּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

DRB ³⁵ Et je me susciterai un sacrificateur fidèle : il fera selon ce qui est dans mon cœur et dans mon âme, et je lui bâtirai une maison stable, et il marchera toujours devant mon oint.

KJV ³⁵ And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

VULC ³⁵ Et suscitabo mihi sacerdotem fidelem, qui juxta cor meum et animam meam faciet : et ædificabo ei domum fidelem, et ambulabit coram christo meo cunctis diebus.

WLC ³⁵ וַהֲקִימֹתִ֥י לִי֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן נֶאֱמָ֔ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר בִּלְבָבִ֥י וּבְנַפְשִׁ֖י יַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וּבָנִ֤יתִי לוֹ֙ בַּ֣יִת נֶאֱמָ֔ן וְהִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ לִפְנֵֽי־ מְשִׁיחִ֖י כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃

DRB ³⁶ Et il arrivera que quiconque restera de ta maison viendra et se prosternera devant lui, pour avoir une pièce d'argent et un rond de pain, et dira : Place-moi, je te prie, dans* quelqu'une des charges de la sacrificature, afin que je mange une bouchée de pain !

KJV ³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

VULC ³⁶ Futurum est autem, ut quicumque remanserit in domo tua, veniat ut oretur pro eo, et offerat nummum argenteum, et tortam panis, dicatque : Dimitte me, obsecro, ad unam partem sacerdotalem, ut comedam buccellam panis.

DRB ¹ Et le jeune garçon Samuel servait l'Éternel devant Éli ; et la parole de l'Éternel était rare en ces jours-là : la vision n'était pas répandue.

KJV ¹ And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

DRB ² Et il arriva en ce temps-là, qu'Éli était couché en son lieu (or ses yeux commençaient à être troubles, il ne pouvait voir) ;

KJV ² And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;

DRB ³ et la lampe de Dieu n'était pas encore éteinte, et Samuel était couché dans le temple de l'Éternel, où était l'arche de Dieu,

KJV ³ And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;

VULC ³ lucerna Dei antequam extingueretur, Samuel dormiebat in templo Domini, ubi erat arca Dei.

DRB ⁴ et l'Éternel appela Samuel. Et il dit : Me voici.

KJV ⁶ And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.

VULC ⁶ Et adjecit Dominus rursum vocare Samuelem. Consurgensque Samuel, abiit ad Heli, et dixit : Ecce ego, quia vocasti me. Qui respondit : Non vocavi te, fili mi : revertere et dormi.

DRB ⁷ Et Samuel ne connaissait pas encore l'Éternel, et la parole de l'Éternel ne lui avait pas encore été révélée.

KJV ⁷ Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.

VULC ⁷ Porro Samuel necdum sciebat Dominum, neque revelatus fuerat ei sermo Domini.

WLC ⁷ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל טֶ֖רֶם יָדַ֣ע אֶת־ יְהוָ֑ה וְטֶ֛רֶם יִגָּלֶ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו דְּבַר־ יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ⁸ Et l'Éternel appela de nouveau : Samuel ! pour la troisième fois ; et [Samuel] se leva et alla vers Éli, et [lui] dit : Me voici, car tu m'as appelé. Et Éli s'aperçut que l'Éternel avait appelé le jeune garçon.

KJV ⁸ And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.

DRB ⁹ Et Éli dit à Samuel : Va, couche-toi ; et s'il t'appelle, alors tu diras : Parle, Éternel, car ton serviteur écoute. Et Samuel s'en alla et se coucha en son lieu.

KJV ⁹ Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

VULC ⁹ et ait : Ecce ego, quia vocasti me. Intellexit ergo Heli quia Dominus vocaret puerum : et ait ad Samuelem : Vade, et dormi : et si deinceps vocaverit te, dices : Loquere, Domine, quia audit servus tuus. Abiit ergo Samuel, et dormivit in loco suo.

DRB ¹⁰ Et l'Éternel vint et se tint là, et appela comme les autres fois : Samuel ! Samuel ! Et Samuel dit : Parle, car ton serviteur écoute.

KJV ¹⁰ And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

DRB ¹¹ Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel : Voici, je vais faire en Israël une chose telle, que quiconque l'entendra, les deux oreilles lui tinteront.

KJV ¹¹ And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

VULC ¹¹ Et dixit Dominus ad Samuelem : Ecce ego facio verbum in Israël, quod quicumque audierit, tinnient ambæ aures ejus.

DRB ¹² En ce jour-là j'accomplirai sur Éli tout ce que j'ai dit touchant sa maison : je commencerai et j'achèverai ;

KJV ¹² In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

VULC ¹² In die illa suscitabo adversum Heli omnia quæ locutus sum super domum ejus : incipiam, et complebo.

DRB ¹³ car je lui ai déclaré que je vais juger sa maison pour toujours, à cause de l'iniquité qu'il connaît, parce que ses fils se sont avilis et qu'il ne les a pas retenus.

KJV ¹³ For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

VULC ¹³ Prædixi enim ei quod judicaturus essem domum ejus in æternum propter iniquitatem, eo quod noverat indigne agere filios suos, et non corripuerit eos.

WLC ¹³ וְהִגַּ֣דְתִּי ל֔וֹ כִּֽי־ שֹׁפֵ֥ט אֲנִ֛י אֶת־ בֵּית֖וֹ עַד־ עוֹלָ֑ם בַּעֲוֺ֣ן אֲשֶׁר־ יָדַ֗ע כִּֽי־ מְקַֽלְלִ֤ים לָהֶם֙ בָּנָ֔יו וְלֹ֥א כִהָ֖ה בָּֽם׃

DRB ¹⁴ C'est pourquoi j'ai juré à la maison d'Éli ; Si jamais propitiation est faite pour l'iniquité de la maison d'Éli, par sacrifice ou par offrande* !

KJV ¹⁴ And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

VULC ¹⁴ Idcirco juravi domui Heli quod non expietur iniquitas domus ejus victimis et muneribus usque in æternum.

WLC ¹⁴ וְלָכֵ֥ן נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לְבֵ֣ית עֵלִ֑י אִֽם־ יִתְכַּפֵּ֞ר עֲוֺ֧ן בֵּית־ עֵלִ֛י בְּזֶ֥בַח וּבְמִנְחָ֖ה עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃

DRB ¹⁵ Et Samuel resta couché jusqu'au matin ; et il ouvrit les portes de la maison de l'Éternel. Et Samuel craignait de rapporter sa vision à Éli.

KJV ¹⁵ And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

VULC ¹⁵ Dormivit autem Samuel usque mane, aperuitque ostia domus Domini. Et Samuel timebat indicare visionem Heli.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב שְׁמוּאֵל֙ עַד־ הַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח אֶת־ דַּלְת֣וֹת בֵּית־ יְהוָ֑ה וּשְׁמוּאֵ֣ל יָרֵ֔א מֵהַגִּ֥יד אֶת־ הַמַּרְאָ֖ה אֶל־ עֵלִֽי׃

DRB ¹⁶ Et Éli appela Samuel, et [lui] dit : Samuel, mon fils !

KJV ¹⁶ Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

VULC ¹⁶ Vocavit ergo Heli Samuelem, et dixit : Samuel fili mi ? Qui respondens ait : Præsto sum.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיִּקְרָ֤א עֵלִי֙ אֶת־ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל בְּנִ֑י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי׃

DRB ¹⁷ Et il dit : Me voici. Et [Éli] dit : Quelle est la parole qu'il t'a dite ? Je te prie, ne me le cache pas. Ainsi Dieu te fasse, et ainsi il y ajoute, si tu me caches quoi que ce soit de toute la parole qu'il t'a dite.

KJV ¹⁷ And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.

VULC ¹⁷ Et interrogavit eum : Quis est sermo, quem locutus est Dominus ad te ? oro te ne celaveris me : hæc faciat tibi Deus, et hæc addat, si absconderis a me sermonem ex omnibus verbis quæ dicta sunt tibi.

WLC ¹⁷ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מָ֤ה הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלֶ֔יךָ אַל־ נָ֥א תְכַחֵ֖ד מִמֶּ֑נִּי כֹּ֣ה יַעֲשֶׂה־ לְּךָ֤ אֱלֹהִים֙ וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֔יף אִם־ תְּכַחֵ֤ד מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ דָּבָ֔ר מִכָּל־ הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבֶּ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

DRB ¹⁸ Et Samuel lui rapporta toutes les paroles, et ne les lui cacha pas. Et [Éli] dit : C'est l'Éternel, qu'il fasse ce qui est bon à ses yeux.

KJV ¹⁸ And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.

VULC ¹⁸ Indicavit itaque ei Samuel universos sermones, et non abscondit ab eo. Et ille respondit : Dominus est : quod bonum est in oculis suis faciat.

WLC ¹⁸ וַיַּגֶּד־ ל֤וֹ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א כִחֵ֖ד מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר יְהוָ֣ה ה֔וּא הַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינָ֖ו יַעֲשֶֽׂה׃

DRB ¹⁹ Et Samuel grandissait ; et l'Éternel était avec lui, et il ne laissa tomber à terre aucune de ses paroles.

KJV ¹⁹ And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

VULC ¹⁹ Crevit autem Samuel, et Dominus erat cum eo, et non cecidit ex omnibus verbis ejus in terram.

WLC ¹⁹ וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל וַֽיהוָה֙ הָיָ֣ה עִמּ֔וֹ וְלֹֽא־ הִפִּ֥יל מִכָּל־ דְּבָרָ֖יו אָֽרְצָה׃

DRB ²⁰ Et tout Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beër-Shéba, sut que Samuel était établi prophète de l'Éternel.

KJV ²⁰ And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

VULC ²⁰ Et cognovit universus Israël, a Dan usque Bersabee, quod fidelis Samuel propheta esset Domini.

WLC ²⁰ וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִדָּ֖ן וְעַד־ בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע כִּ֚י נֶאֱמָ֣ן שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל לְנָבִ֖יא לַיהוָֽה׃

DRB ²¹ Et l'Éternel continua d'apparaître à Silo ; car l'Éternel se révélait à Samuel, à Silo, par la parole de l'Éternel.

KJV ²¹ And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

VULC ²¹ Et addidit Dominus ut appareret in Silo, quoniam revelatus fuerat Dominus Samueli in Silo juxta verbum Domini. Et evenit sermo Samuelis universo Israëli.

WLC ²¹ וַיֹּ֥סֶף יְהוָ֖ה לְהֵרָאֹ֣ה בְשִׁלֹ֑ה כִּֽי־ נִגְלָ֨ה יְהוָ֧ה אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל בְּשִׁל֖וֹ בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃
