1S 15-17 (King James)

   ¹ Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. ² Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. ³ Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. ⁴ And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. ⁵ And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley. ⁶ And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. ⁷ And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. ⁸ And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. ⁹ But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
   ¹⁰ Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, ¹¹ It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. ¹² And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. ¹³ And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. ¹⁴ And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? ¹⁵ And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. ¹⁶ Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. ¹⁷ And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? ¹⁸ And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed. ¹⁹ Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? ²⁰ And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. ²¹ But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. ²² And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. ²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
   ²⁴ And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. ²⁵ Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. ²⁶ And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. ²⁷ And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. ²⁸ And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. ²⁹ And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. ³⁰ Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. ³¹ So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
   ³² Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. ³³ And Samuel said, As the sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. ³⁴ Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. ³⁵ And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

1 Samuel 16

   ¹ And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. ² And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD. ³ And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. ⁴ And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? ⁵ And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
   ⁶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD's anointed is before him. ⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. ⁸ Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. ⁹ Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. ¹⁰ Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. ¹¹ And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. ¹² And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
   ¹⁴ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. ¹⁵ And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. ¹⁶ Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. ¹⁷ And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. ¹⁸ Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. ¹⁹ Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. ²⁰ And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. ²¹ And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. ²² And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. ²³ And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

1 Samuel 17

   ¹ Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim. ² And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. ³ And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them. ⁴ And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. ⁵ And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. ⁶ And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders. ⁷ And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him. ⁸ And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. ⁹ If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. ¹⁰ And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. ¹¹ When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
   ¹² Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul. ¹³ And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. ¹⁴ And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul. ¹⁵ But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. ¹⁶ And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. ¹⁷ And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren; ¹⁸ And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge. ¹⁹ Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. ²⁰ And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle. ²¹ For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army. ²² And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren. ²³ And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them. ²⁴ And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid. ²⁵ And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel. ²⁶ And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? ²⁷ And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him. ²⁸ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. ²⁹ And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? ³⁰ And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
   ³¹ And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him. ³² And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. ³³ And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. ³⁴ And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: ³⁵ And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. ³⁶ Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. ³⁷ David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee. ³⁸ And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. ³⁹ And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
   ⁴⁰ And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine. ⁴¹ And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. ⁴² And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. ⁴³ And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. ⁴⁴ And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. ⁴⁵ Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. ⁴⁶ This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. ⁴⁷ And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
   ⁴⁸ And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. ⁴⁹ And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. ⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. ⁵¹ Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. ⁵² And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. ⁵³ And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. ⁵⁴ And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. ⁵⁵ And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. ⁵⁶ And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is. ⁵⁷ And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. ⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

   ¹ Or Samuel dit à Saül : L'Eternel m'a envoyé pour t'oindre afin que tu sois Roi sur mon peuple, sur Israël ; maintenant donc écoute les paroles de l'Eternel. ² Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées : J'ai rappelé en ma mémoire ce qu'Hamalec a fait à Israël, [et] comment il s'opposa à lui sur le chemin, quand il montait d'Egypte. ³ Va maintenant, et frappe Hamalec, et détruisez à la façon de l'interdit tout ce qu'il a, et ne l'épargne point ; mais fais mourir tant les hommes que les femmes ; tant les grands que ceux qui tètent, tant les boeufs que le menu bétail, tant les chameaux que les ânes. ⁴ Saül donc assembla le peuple à cri public, et en fit le dénombrement à Télaïm, qui fut de deux cent mille hommes de pied, et de dix mille hommes de Juda. ⁵ Et Saül vint jusqu'à la ville de Hamalec, et mit des embuscades en la vallée. ⁶ Et Saül dit aux Kéniens : Allez retirez-vous, descendez du milieu des Hamalécites, de peur que je ne vous enveloppe avec eux ; car vous usâtes de gratuité envers tous les enfants d'Israël, quand ils montèrent d'Egypte. Et les Kéniens se retirèrent d'entre les Hamalécites. ⁷ Et Saül frappa les Hamalécites depuis Havila jusqu'en Sur, qui est vis-à-vis d'Egypte. ⁸ Et il prit vif Agag, Roi d'Hamalec ; mais il fît passer tout le peuple au fil de l'épée à la façon de l'interdit. ⁹ Saül donc et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, et les meilleures brebis, les [meilleurs] boeufs, les bêtes grasses, les agneaux, et tout ce qui était bon ; et ils ne voulurent point les détruire à la façon de l'interdit ; ils détruisirent seulement à la façon de l'interdit tout ce qui n'était d'aucun prix, et méprisable.
   ¹⁰ Alors la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Samuel en disant : ¹¹ Je me repens d'avoir établi Saül pour Roi, car il s'est détourné de moi, et n'a point exécuté mes paroles. Et Samuel en fut fort attristé, et cria à l'Eternel toute cette nuit-là. ¹² Puis Samuel se leva de bon matin pour aller au-devant de Saül. Et on fit rapport à Samuel, en disant : Saül est venu à Carmel, et voici il s'est fait [là] dresser une place, mais il s'en est retourné, et passant au delà il est descendu à Guilgal. ¹³ Quand Samuel fut venu à Saül, Saül lui dit : Tu sois béni de l'Eternel ; j'ai exécuté la parole de l'Eternel. ¹⁴ Et Samuel dit : Quel est donc ce bêlement de brebis à mes oreilles, et ce meuglement de boeufs que j'entends ? ¹⁵ Et Saül répondit : Ils les ont amenés des Hamalécites ; car le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les [meilleurs] boeufs, pour les sacrifier à l'Eternel ton Dieu ; et nous avons détruit le reste à la façon de l'interdit. ¹⁶ Et Samuel dit à Saül : Arrête, et je te déclarerai ce que l'Eternel m'a dit cette nuit ; et il lui répondit : Parle ? ¹⁷ Samuel donc dit : N'est-il pas vrai que, quand tu étais petit à tes yeux, tu as été fait Chef des Tribus d'Israël, et l'Eternel t'a oint pour Roi sur Israël ? ¹⁸ Or l'Eternel t'avait envoyé en cette expédition, et t'avait dit : Va, et détruis à la façon de l'interdit ces pécheurs, les Hamalécites, et fais-leur la guerre, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient consumés. ¹⁹ Et pourquoi n'as-tu pas obéi à la voix de l'Eternel, mais tu t'es jeté sur le butin, et as fait ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel. ²⁰ Et Saül répondit à Samuel : J'ai pourtant obéi à la voix de l'Eternel, et je suis allé par le chemin par lequel l'Eternel m'a envoyé, et j'ai amené Agag Roi des Hamalécites, et j'ai détruit à la façon de l'interdit les Hamalécites. ²¹ Mais le peuple a pris des brebis et des boeufs du butin, [comme] des prémices de l'interdit, pour sacrifier à l'Eternel ton Dieu à Guilgal. ²² Alors Samuel dit : L'Eternel prend-il plaisir aux holocaustes et aux sacrifices, comme qu'on obéisse à sa voix ? Voici, l'obéissance vaut mieux que le sacrifice, [et] se rendre attentif vaut mieux que la graisse des moutons ; ²³ Car la rébellion est [autant que] le péché de divination, et c'est une idole et un Théraphim que la transgression. Parce [donc] que tu as rejeté la parole de l'Eternel, il t'a aussi rejeté, afin que tu ne sois plus Roi.
   ²⁴ Et Saül répondit à Samuel : J'ai péché parce que j'ai transgressé le commandement de l'Eternel, et tes paroles ; car je craignais le peuple, et j'ai acquiescé à sa voix. ²⁵ Mais maintenant, je te prie, pardonne-moi mon péché, et retourne-t'en avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l'Eternel. ²⁶ Et Samuel dit à Saül : Je ne retournerai point avec toi ; parce que tu as rejeté la parole de l'Eternel, et que l'Eternel t'a rejeté, afin que tu ne sois plus Roi sur Israël. ²⁷ Et comme Samuel se tournait pour s'en aller, [Saül] lui prit le pan de son manteau, qui se déchira. ²⁸ Alors Samuel lui dit : L'Eternel a aujourd'hui déchiré le Royaume d'Israël de dessus toi, et l'a donné à ton prochain, qui est meilleur que toi. ²⁹ Et en effet ; la force d'Israël ne mentira point, elle ne se repentira point ; car il n'est pas un homme, pour se repentir. ³⁰ Et Saül répondit : J'ai péché ; [mais] honore moi maintenant, je te prie, en la présence des Anciens de mon peuple, et en la présence d'Israël, et retourne-t'en avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l'Eternel ton Dieu. ³¹ Samuel donc s'en retourna et suivit Saül ; et Saül se prosterna devant l'Eternel.
   ³² Puis Samuel dit : Amenez-moi Agag Roi d'Hamalec. Et Agag vint à lui, faisant le gracieux ; car Agag disait : Certainement l'amertume de la mort est passée. ³³ Mais Samuel dit : Comme ton épée a privé les femmes [de leurs enfants], ainsi ta mère sera privée d'enfants entre les femmes. Et Samuel mit Agag en pièces devant l'Eternel à Guilgal. ³⁴ Puis il s'en alla à Rama ; et Saül monta en sa maison à Guibbath-Saül. ³⁵ Et Samuel n'alla plus voir Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort ; quoique Samuel eût mené deuil sur Saül, de ce que l'Eternel s'était repenti d'avoir établi Saül pour Roi sur Israël.

   ¹ Et l'Eternel dit à Samuel : Jusqu'à quand mèneras-tu deuil sur Saül, vu que je l'ai rejeté, afin qu'il ne règne plus sur Israël ? Emplis ta corne d'huile, et viens, je t'enverrai vers Isaï Bethléhémite ; car je me suis pourvu d'un de ses fils pour Roi. ² Et Samuel dit : Comment y irai-je ? car Saül l'ayant appris me tuera. Et l'Eternel répondit : Tu emmèneras avec toi une jeune vache du troupeau ; et tu diras : Je suis venu pour sacrifier à l'Eternel. ³ Et tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice, [et] là je te ferai savoir ce que tu auras à faire, et tu m'oindras celui que je te dirai. ⁴ Samuel donc fit comme l'Eternel lui avait dit, et vint à Bethléhem, et les Anciens de la ville tout effrayés accoururent au-devant de lui, et dirent : Ne viens-tu que pour notre bien ? ⁵ Et il répondit : [Je ne viens que pour votre] bien ; je suis venu pour sacrifier à l'Eternel, sanctifiez-vous, et venez avec moi au sacrifice. Il fit sanctifier aussi Isaï et ses fils, et les invita au sacrifice.
   ⁶ Et il arriva que comme ils entraient, ayant vu Eliab, il dit : Certes l'oint de l'Eternel est devant lui. ⁷ Mais l'Eternel dit à Samuel : Ne prends point garde à son visage, ni à la grandeur de sa taille, car je l'ai rejeté ; parce que [l'Eternel n'a point égard] à ce à quoi l'homme a égard ; car l'homme a égard à ce qui est devant les yeux ; mais l'Eternel a égard au coeur. ⁸ Puis Isaï appela Abinadab, et le fit passer devant Samuel, lequel dit : L'Eternel n'a pas choisi non plus celui-ci. ⁹ Et Isaï fit passer Samma, et [Samuel] dit : L'Eternel n'a pas choisi non plus celui-ci. ¹⁰ Ainsi Isaï fit passer ses sept fils devant Samuel ; et Samuel dit à Isaï : L'Eternel n'a point choisi ceux-ci. ¹¹ Puis Samuel dit à Isaï : Sont-ce là tous tes enfants ? Et il dit : Il reste encore le plus petit ; mais voici, il paît les brebis. Alors Samuel dit à Isaï : Envoie-le chercher ; car nous ne nous mettrons point à table jusqu'à ce qu'il soit venu ici. ¹² Il envoya donc, et le fit venir. Or il était blond, de bonne mine, et beau de visage. Et l'Éternel dit [à Samuel] : Lève-toi, et oins-le ; car c'est celui [que j'ai choisi]. ¹³ Alors Samuel prit la corne d'huile, et l'oignit au milieu de ses frères ; et depuis ce jour-là l'Esprit de l'Eternel saisit David. Et Samuel se leva, et s'en alla à Rama.
   ¹⁴ Et l'Esprit de l'Eternel se retira de Saül ; et le malin esprit [envoyé] par l'Eternel le troublait. ¹⁵ Et les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent : Voici maintenant, le malin esprit [envoyé] de Dieu te trouble. ¹⁶ Que [le Roi] notre Seigneur dise à ses serviteurs qui sont devant toi, qu'ils cherchent un homme qui sache jouer du violon ; et quand le malin esprit [envoyé] de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main, et tu en seras soulagé. ¹⁷ Saül donc dit à ses serviteurs : Je vous prie, trouvez-moi un homme qui sache bien jouer des instruments, et amenez-le-moi. ¹⁸ Et l'un de ses serviteurs répondit, et dit : Voici, j'ai vu un fils d'Isaï Bethléhémite qui sait jouer des instruments, et qui est fort, vaillant, et guerrier, qui parle bien, bel homme, et l'Eternel est avec lui. ¹⁹ Alors Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, pour lui dire : Envoie-moi David ton fils, qui est avec les brebis. ²⁰ Et Isaï prit un âne [chargé] de pain, et un baril de vin, et un chevreau de lait, et les envoya par David son fils, à Saül. ²¹ Et David vint vers Saül, et se présenta devant lui ; et [Saül] l'aima fort, et il lui servit à porter ses armes. ²² Et Saül envoya dire à Isaï : Je te prie que David demeure à mon service ; car il a trouvé grâce devant moi. ²³ Il arrivait donc que quand le malin esprit [envoyé] de Dieu, était sur Saül, David prenait le violon, et en jouait de sa main ; et Saül en était soulagé, et s'en trouvait bien, parce que le malin esprit se retirait de lui.

David tue Goliath.

   ¹ Or les Philistins assemblèrent leurs armées pour faire la guerre, et ils s'assemblèrent à Soco, qui est de Juda, et se campèrent entre Soco et Hazéka, sur la frontière de Dammim. ² Saül aussi et ceux d'Israël s'assemblèrent, et se campèrent en la vallée du chêne, et rangèrent leur bataille pour aller à la rencontre des Philistins. ³ Or les Philistins étaient sur une montagne du côté de deçà, et les Israëlites étaient sur une [autre] montagne du côté de delà ; de sorte que la vallée était entre deux. ⁴ Et il sortit du camp des Philistins un homme qui se présentait entre les deux armées, et qui avait nom Goliath, [de la ville] de Gath, haut de six coudées et d'une paume. ⁵ Et il avait un casque d'airain sur sa tête, et était armé d'une cuirasse à écailles ; et sa cuirasse pesait cinq mille sicles d'airain. ⁶ Il avait aussi des jambières d'airain sur ses jambes, et un écu d'airain entre ses épaules. ⁷ La hampe de sa hallebarde était comme l'ensuble d'un tisserand, et le fer de cette [hallebarde] pesait six cents sicles de fer ; et celui qui portait son bouclier marchait devant lui. ⁸ Il se présentait donc, et criait aux troupes rangées d'Israël, et leur disait : Pourquoi sortiriez-vous pour vous ranger en bataille ? Ne suis-je pas Philistin, et vous n'êtes-vous pas serviteurs de Saül ? Choisissez l'un d'entre vous, et qu'il descende vers moi. ⁹ Que s'il est le plus fort en combattant avec moi, et qu'il me tue, nous serons vos serviteurs ; mais si j'ai l'avantage sur lui, et que je le tue, vous serez nos serviteurs, et vous nous serez asservis. ¹⁰ Et le Philistin disait : J'ai déshonoré aujourd'hui les troupes rangées d'Israël, [en leur disant] : Donnez-moi un homme, et nous combattrons ensemble. ¹¹ [Mais] Saül et tous les Israëlites ayant entendu les paroles du Philistin, furent étonnés, et eurent une grande peur.
   ¹² Or il y avait David, fils d'un homme Ephratien de Bethléhem de Juda, nommé Isaï, qui avait huit fils ; il était vieux, et il était mis au rang des personnes de qualité du temps de Saül. ¹³ Et les trois plus grands fils d'Isaï s'en étaient allés, et avaient suivi Saül en cette guerre. Les noms de ses trois fils qui s'en étaient allés à la guerre, étaient Eliab, le premier-né ; Abinadab, le second ; et Samma, le troisième. ¹⁴ Et David était le plus jeune, et les trois plus grands suivaient Saül. ¹⁵ Et David allait et revenait d'auprès de Saül, pour paître les brebis de son père en Bethléhem. ¹⁶ Et le Philistin s'approchant le matin et le soir, se présenta quarante jours durant. ¹⁷ Et Isaï dit à David son fils : Prends maintenant pour tes frères un Epha de ce froment rôti, et ces dix pains, et porte les en diligence au camp à tes frères. ¹⁸ Tu porteras aussi ces dix fromages de lait au capitaine de leur millier, et tu visiteras tes frères [pour savoir] s'ils se portent bien, et tu m'en apporteras des marques. ¹⁹ Or Saül, et eux, et tous ceux d'Israël étaient en la vallée du chêne, combattant contre les Philistins. ²⁰ David donc se leva de bon matin, et laissa les brebis en garde au berger, puis ayant pris sa charge, s'en alla, comme son père Isaï le lui avait commandé, et il arriva au lieu où était le camp ; et l'armée était sortie là où elle se rangeait en bataille, et on jetait de grands cris à cause de la bataille. ²¹ Car les Israëlites et les Philistins avaient rangé armée contre armée. ²² Alors David se déchargea de son bagage, le laissant entre les mains de celui qui gardait le bagage, et courut au lieu où était la bataille rangée, et y étant arrivé, il demanda à ses frères s'ils se portaient bien. ²³ Et comme il parlait avec eux, voici monter cet homme qui se présentait entre les deux armées, lequel avait nom Goliath, Philistin de la ville de Gath, [qui s'avançant hors] de l'armée des Philistins proféra les mêmes paroles qu'il avait proférées auparavant, et David les entendit. ²⁴ Et tous ceux d'Israël voyant cet homme-là, s'enfuyaient de devant lui, et avaient une grande peur. ²⁵ Et chacun d'Israël disait : N'avez-vous point vu cet homme-là qui est monté ? Il est monté pour déshonorer Israël ; et s'il se trouve quelqu'un qui le frappe, le Roi le comblera de richesses, et lui donnera sa fille, et affranchira la maison de son père [de toutes charges] en Israël. ²⁶ Alors David parla aux gens qui étaient là avec lui, en disant : Quel bien fera-t-on à l'homme qui aura frappé ce Philistin, et qui aura ôté l'opprobre de dessus Israël ? Car qui est ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, pour déshonorer ainsi les batailles rangées du Dieu vivant ? ²⁷ Et le peuple lui répéta ces mêmes paroles-là ; et lui dit : C'est là le bien qu'on fera à l'homme qui l'aura frappé. ²⁸ Et quand Eliab son frère aîné eut entendu qu'il parlait à ces gens-là, sa colère s'enflamma contre David, et il lui dit : Pourquoi es-tu descendu ? et à qui as-tu laissé ce peu de brebis au désert ? Je connais ton orgueil, et la malignité de ton cœur, car tu es descendu pour voir la bataille. ²⁹ Et David répondit : Qu'ai-je fait maintenant ? N'y a-t-il pas de quoi ? ³⁰ Puis il se détourna de celui-là vers un autre, et lui dit les mêmes paroles ; et le peuple lui répondit de la même manière comme la première fois.
   ³¹ Et les paroles que David avait dites ayant été entendues, furent rapportées devant Saül ; et il le fit venir. ³² Et David dit à Saül : Que le coeur ne défaille à personne à cause de celui-là ; ton serviteur ira, et combattra contre ce Philistin. ³³ Mais Saül dit à David : Tu ne saurais aller contre ce Philistin pour combattre contre lui ; car tu n'es qu'un jeune garçon, et lui, il est homme de guerre dès sa jeunesse. ³⁴ Et David répondit à Saül : Ton serviteur paissait les brebis de son père ; et un lion vint, et un ours, et ils emportaient une brebis du troupeau : ³⁵ Mais je sortis après eux, je les frappai, et j'arrachai [la brebis] de leur gueule ; et comme ils se levaient contre moi, je les pris par la mâchoire, je les frappai, et je les tuai. ³⁶ Ton serviteur donc a tué et un lion, et un ours ; et ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, sera comme l'un d'eux ; car il a déshonoré les troupes rangées du Dieu vivant. ³⁷ David dit encore : L'Eternel qui m'a délivré de la griffe du lion, et de la patte de l'ours, lui-même me délivrera de la main de ce Philistin. Alors Saül dit à David : Va, et l'Eternel soit avec toi. ³⁸ Et Saül fit armer David de ses armes, et lui mit son casque d'airain sur sa tête, et le fit armer d'une cuirasse. ³⁹ Puis David ceignit l'épée [de Saül] sur ses armes, et se mit à marcher ; car [jamais] il ne l'avait essayé. Et David dit à Saül : Je ne saurais marcher avec ces armes ; car je ne l'ai jamais essayé. Et David les ôta de dessus soi.
   ⁴⁰ Mais il prit son bâton en sa main, et se choisit du torrent cinq cailloux bien unis, et les mit dans sa mallette de berger qu'il avait, et dans sa poche, et il avait sa fronde en sa main ; et il s'approcha du Philistin. ⁴¹ Le Philistin aussi s'en vint, et s'avança, et s'approcha de David, et l'homme qui portait son bouclier [marchait] devant lui. ⁴² Et le Philistin regarda, et vit David, et le méprisa ; car ce n'était qu'un jeune garçon, blond, et beau de visage. ⁴³ Et le Philistin dit à David : [Suis-]je un chien, que tu viennes contre moi avec des bâtons ? et le Philistin maudit David par ses dieux. ⁴⁴ Le Philistin dit encore à David : Viens vers moi, et je donnerai ta chair aux oiseaux du ciel, et aux bêtes des champs. ⁴⁵ Et David dit au Philistin : Tu viens contre moi avec l'épée, la hallebarde, et l'écu ; mais moi, je viens contre toi au nom de l'Eternel des armées, du Dieu des batailles rangées d'Israël, lequel tu as déshonoré. ⁴⁶ Aujourd'hui l'Eternel te livrera entre mes mains, je te frapperai, je t'ôterai la tête de dessus toi, et je donnerai aujourd'hui les charognes du camp des Philistins aux oiseaux des cieux, et aux animaux de la terre ; et toute la terre saura qu'Israël a un Dieu. ⁴⁷ Et toute cette assemblée saura que l'Eternel ne délivre point par l'épée ni par la hallebarde ; car cette bataille est à l'Eternel, qui vous livrera entre nos mains.
   ⁴⁸ Et il arriva que comme le Philistin se fut levé, et qu'il s'approchait pour rencontrer David, David se hâta, et courut au lieu du combat pour rencontrer le Philistin. ⁴⁹ Alors David mit la main à sa mallette, et en prit une pierre, la jeta avec sa fronde, et il en frappa le Philistin au front, tellement que la pierre s'enfonça dans son front ; et il tomba le visage contre terre. ⁵⁰ Ainsi David avec une fronde et une pierre fut plus fort que le Philistin, et frappa le Philistin, et le tua ; or David n'avait point d'épée en sa main, ⁵¹ Mais David courut, se jeta sur le Philistin, prit son épée, la tira de son fourreau, le tua, et lui coupa la tête. Et les Philistins ayant vu que leur homme fort était mort, s'enfuirent. ⁵² Alors ceux d'Israël et de Juda se levèrent, et jetèrent des cris de joie, et poursuivirent les Philistins, jusqu'à la vallée, et jusqu'aux portes de Hékron ; et les Philistins blessés à mort tombèrent par le chemin de Saharajim, jusqu'à Gath, et jusqu'à Hékron. ⁵³ Et les enfants d'Israël s'en retournèrent de la poursuite des Philistins, et pillèrent leurs camps. ⁵⁴ Et David prit la tête du Philistin, laquelle il porta depuis à Jérusalem ; il mit aussi dans sa tente les armes du [Philistin]. ⁵⁵ Or comme Saül vit David sortant pour rencontrer le Philistin, il dit à Abner Chef de l'armée : Abner, de qui est fils ce jeune garçon ? Et Abner répondit : Comme ton âme vit, ô Roi ! je n'en sais rien. ⁵⁶ Le Roi lui dit : Enquiers-toi de qui est fils ce jeune garçon. ⁵⁷ Sitôt donc que David fut revenu de tuer le Philistin, Abner le prit, et le mena devant Saül, ayant la tête du Philistin en sa main. ⁵⁸ Et Saül lui dit : Jeune garçon, de qui es-tu fils ? David répondit : Je suis fils d'Isaï Bethléhémite, ton serviteur.
