Ec 10:1-12:16 (Annotée Neuchâtel)

   ¹ Une mouche morte rend infecte et gâte l'huile des parfumeurs ; un peu de folie l'emporte sur la sagesse et l'honneur. ² Le coeur du sage est à sa droite et le coeur du fou à sa gauche. ³ Et quelque chemin que suive le fou, il manque de sens et il montre à tous qu'il est un fou.
   ⁴ Si la colère du souverain s'élève contre toi, ne déserte pas ton poste, car le calme prévient de grands péchés. ⁵ Il est un mal que j'ai vu sous le soleil, une erreur provenant de celui qui gouverne : ⁶ la folie occupe un poste très élevé, et des riches demeurent dans l'abaissement. ⁷ J'ai vu des esclaves sur des chevaux et des princes allant à pied comme des esclaves. ⁸ Tel qui creuse un fossé y tombe, qui démolit un mur est mordu par un serpent, ⁹ qui arrache des pierres se blesse, qui fend du bois est en danger. ¹⁰ Si le fer est émoussé et qu'on n'en ait pas aiguisé le tranchant, il faut redoubler d'efforts, mais la sagesse a l'avantage de la réussite. ¹¹ Si le serpent mord parce qu'il n'a pas été charmé, l'enchanteur devient inutile.
   ¹² Les paroles de la bouche du sage sont pleines de grâce, mais les lèvres de l'insensé le perdent ; ¹³ le début des paroles de sa bouche est folie, et le terme de ce qu'il dit est une extravagance funeste. ¹⁴ L'insensé multiplie les paroles, alors que nul homme ne sait ce qui adviendra ; et qui lui dira ce qui sera après lui ? ¹⁵ C'est un travail d'insensé que celui dont il se fatigue, lui qui ne sait pas [même] le chemin de la ville.
   ¹⁶ Malheur à toi, pays dont le roi est un enfant et dont les princes festoient dès le matin ! ¹⁷ Heureux es-tu, pays dont le roi est de noble race et dont les princes se jettent à table en temps convenable, en hommes, et non en buveurs. ¹⁸ Quand il y a paresse, la charpente se disloque, quand les mains sont lâches, la maison a des gouttières. ¹⁹ On fait des repas pour se divertir ; le vin égaie la vie, et l'argent répond à tout. ²⁰ Ne maudis pas le roi, même en pensée ; et ne maudis pas le riche, même dans ta chambre à coucher, car l'oiseau du ciel transporterait tes propos et la gent ailée publierait tes discours.

Ecclésiaste 11

   ¹ Jette ton pain sur la surface des eaux, car longtemps après tu le retrouveras. ² Fais-en part à sept et même à huit, car tu ne sais pas quel malheur peut arriver sur la terre. ³ Quand les nuées sont gonflées de pluie, elles la déversent sur la terre, et quand un arbre tombe, que ce soit vers le sud ou vers le nord, il reste là où il est. ⁴ Qui observe le vent ne sèmera pas ; qui regarde les nuages ne moissonnera pas. ⁵ De même que tu ne connais nullement le chemin du vent, ni comment les os se forment dans le sein de la femme enceinte, de même tu ignores l'oeuvre de Dieu, qui fait toutes choses. ⁶ Dès le matin sème ta semence, et le soir ne laisse pas reposer ta main, car tu ne sais lequel [de ces deux travaux] réussira, celui-ci ou celui-là, ou si tous deux ne seront pas également bons.
   ⁷ Oui, la lumière est douce, et il est agréable aux yeux de voir le soleil. ⁸ Si un homme vit beaucoup d'années, qu'il se réjouisse pendant toutes ces années ! Et qu'il pense aux jours de ténèbres, qui seront nombreux. Tout ce qui arrivera est vanité !

Ecclésiaste 12

   ¹ Jeune homme, réjouis-toi dans ton jeune âge, et que ton coeur te rende content aux jours de ta jeunesse ; marche comme ton coeur te mène et selon le regard de tes yeux. Mais sache que pour toutes ces choses Dieu te fera venir en jugement. ² Bannis le chagrin de ton coeur et éloigne de ta chair la souffrance, car la jeunesse et l'aurore sont vanité. ³ Souviens-toi de ton Créateur pendant les jours de ta jeunesse, avant que viennent les jours mauvais et qu'arrivent les années dont tu diras : Je n'y prends point de plaisir ! ⁴ avant que s'obscurcissent le soleil et la lumière, la lune et les étoiles, et que les nuages reviennent après la pluie ; ⁵ alors que les gardiens de la maison tremblent, que les hommes forts fléchissent ; avant que les meunières soient oisives, parce que leur nombre est réduit ; que celles qui regardent par les fenêtres se voilent, ⁶ que les deux battants de la porte se ferment sur la rue ; quand le bruit de la meule baisse et devient comme la voix d'un petit oiseau, et que toutes les filles du chant s'affaiblissent ; ⁷ alors aussi on s'effraie des hauteurs et l'on a peur en marchant ; l'amandier pousse ses fleurs, la sauterelle devient pesante et la câpre est sans effet, car l'homme s'en va vers sa demeure éternelle, et les pleureuses parcourent les rues ; ⁸ avant que le cordon d'argent se détache et que le vase d'or se rompe, que le seau se casse sur la fontaine et que la roue brisée tombe dans le puits, ⁹ et que la poussière retourne dans la terre, comme elle y avait été, et que l'esprit retourne à Dieu qui l'a donné ! ¹⁰ Vanité des vanités, dit l'Ecclésiaste, tout est vanité ! ¹¹ Comme d'ailleurs l'Ecclésiaste était sage, il a enseigné aussi la science au peuple ; il a médité et scruté, et il a composé de nombreuses maximes. ¹² L'Ecclésiaste s'est appliqué à trouver des paroles agréables ; elles ont été écrites avec droiture, ce sont des paroles de vérité.
   ¹³ Les paroles des sages sont comme des aiguillons et les collections de sentences sont comme des clous bien plantés ; ils sont donnés par un seul berger. ¹⁴ Au reste, mon fils, sois sur tes gardes ! On fait des livres à n'en pas finir, et trop étudier fatigue le corps. ¹⁵ Ecoutons donc le résumé de tout le discours : Crains Dieu et garde ses commandements, car c'est là le tout pour l'homme. ¹⁶ Car Dieu fera venir en jugement toute oeuvre, tout ce qui est caché, soit bien, soit mal.

   ¹ Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. ² A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left. ³ Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
   ⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences. ⁵ There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler: ⁶ Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place. ⁷ I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth. ⁸ He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him. ⁹ Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby. ¹⁰ If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct. ¹¹ Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
   ¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness. ¹⁴ A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him? ¹⁵ The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
   ¹⁶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning! ¹⁷ Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness! ¹⁸ By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through. ¹⁹ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things. ²⁰ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

Ecclésiaste 11

   ¹ Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. ² Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. ³ If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. ⁴ He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. ⁵ As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. ⁶ In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
   ⁷ Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun: ⁸ But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity. ⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. ¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Ecclésiaste 12

   ¹ Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; ² While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: ³ In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, ⁴ And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; ⁵ Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: ⁶ Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. ⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
   ⁸ Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. ⁹ And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. ¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. ¹² And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
   ¹³ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. ¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
