Ec 10:1-12:16 (King James)

   ¹ Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. ² A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left. ³ Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
   ⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences. ⁵ There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler: ⁶ Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place. ⁷ I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth. ⁸ He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him. ⁹ Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby. ¹⁰ If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct. ¹¹ Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
   ¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness. ¹⁴ A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him? ¹⁵ The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
   ¹⁶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning! ¹⁷ Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness! ¹⁸ By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through. ¹⁹ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things. ²⁰ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

Ecclésiaste 11

   ¹ Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. ² Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. ³ If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. ⁴ He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. ⁵ As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. ⁶ In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
   ⁷ Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun: ⁸ But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity. ⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. ¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Ecclésiaste 12

   ¹ Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; ² While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: ³ In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, ⁴ And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; ⁵ Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: ⁶ Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. ⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
   ⁸ Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. ⁹ And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. ¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. ¹² And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
   ¹³ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. ¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

¹ Les mouches mortes infectent et font fermenter l'huile du parfumeur; de même, un peu de folie l'emporte sur la sagesse et sur la gloire. ² Le cœur du sage le conduit du bon côté, et le cœur de l'homme stupide du mauvais côté. ³ Quand le fou marche sur un chemin, comme il manque de bon sens, il révèle à tous qu'il est un fou. ⁴ Si un dirigeant s'attaque à toi, ne quitte pas ta position, car le calme évite de grands péchés.
⁵ Il y a un mal que j'ai vu sous le soleil, comme un péché involontaire commis par celui qui gouverne: ⁶ la folie occupe de nombreux postes élevés tandis que des riches sont assis dans l'abaissement. ⁷ J'ai vu des esclaves montés sur des chevaux et des chefs en train de marcher comme des esclaves.
⁸ Celui qui creuse une fosse y tombera et celui qui démolit un mur sera mordu par un serpent. ⁹ Celui qui remue des pierres sera blessé par elles et celui qui fend du bois s'expose au danger: ¹⁰ s'il a usé la hache et ne l'a pas aiguisée, il devra redoubler de force. La sagesse a l'avantage de donner le succès.
¹¹ Si le serpent mord faute d'avoir été charmé, le charmeur n'a aucun avantage.
¹² Les paroles du sage sont pleines de grâce, tandis que les lèvres de l'homme stupide causent sa perte: ¹³ dès le début, ce qu'il profère n'est que folie, et la fin de son discours est plus délirante encore. ¹⁴ Le fou multiplie les paroles. Pourtant, l'homme ne sait pas ce qui arrivera, et qui peut lui annoncer ce qui existera après lui? ¹⁵ Le travail des hommes stupides les fatigue, eux qui ne savent même pas comment se rendre à la ville.
¹⁶ Malheur à toi, pays dont le roi est un enfant et dont les chefs se goinfrent dès le matin! ¹⁷ Tu es heureux, pays dont le roi est d'origine noble et dont les chefs mangent au moment convenable, pour prendre des forces et non pour s'adonner à la boisson! ¹⁸ Quand les mains sont paresseuses, le toit s'effondre; quand elles sont négligentes, la maison a des gouttières. ¹⁹ On prépare des repas pour s'amuser, le vin rend la vie joyeuse et l'argent a réponse à tout.
²⁰ Ne maudis pas le roi, même en pensée, et ne maudis pas le riche dans la chambre où tu couches, car l'oiseau pourrait en emporter le son, l'animal ailé pourrait répéter tes paroles.

Ecclésiaste 11

Le moment favorable pour rechercher Dieu

¹ Jette ton pain à la surface de l'eau, car avec le temps tu le retrouveras. ² Donnes-en une part à sept et même à huit personnes, car tu ne sais pas quel malheur peut arriver sur la terre. ³ Quand les nuages sont gorgés d'eau, ils la déversent sur la terre. Si un arbre tombe, que ce soit au sud ou au nord, il reste là où il est tombé. ⁴ Celui qui observe le vent ne sèmera pas et celui qui regarde les nuages ne moissonnera pas. ⁵ Tu ne sais pas quel parcours le vent suit ni comment les os se forment dans le ventre de la femme enceinte; de même tu ne connais pas l'œuvre de Dieu, l'auteur de tout ce qui existe. ⁶ Sème tes graines dès le matin et le soir ne laisse pas ta main en repos, car tu ne sais pas ce qui réussira: est-ce que ce sera ceci ou cela? Est-ce que l'un et l'autre seront également bons?
⁷ La lumière est douce et il est agréable, pour les yeux, de voir le soleil. ⁸ Si donc un homme vit longtemps, qu'il se réjouisse pendant toutes ces années, tout en se souvenant des jours sombres, car ils seront nombreux. Tout ce qui arrive n'est que fumée.
⁹ Jeune homme, réjouis-toi dans ton adolescence, livre ton cœur à la joie durant ta jeunesse, marche en suivant les voies de ton cœur et les regards de tes yeux! Cependant, sache que pour tout cela Dieu t'appellera en jugement. ¹⁰ Chasse le chagrin de ton cœur et éloigne le mal de ton corps, car l'adolescence et la jeunesse partent en fumée.

Ecclésiaste 12

¹ Souviens-toi de ton créateur durant ta jeunesse, avant l'arrivée des jours mauvais, avant d'atteindre les années où tu diras: «Je n'y prends aucun plaisir.»
² C'est le moment où
le soleil et la lumière,
la lune et les étoiles s'obscurcissent,
et où les nuages reviennent juste après la pluie.
³ C'est l'époque
où les gardiens de la maison tremblent,
où les hommes forts se courbent,
où celles qui broient interrompent leur tâche
parce qu'elles sont trop peu nombreuses,
où ceux qui regardent par les fenêtres s'obscurcissent.
⁴ C'est l'époque où
les deux battants de la porte se ferment sur la rue
tandis que le bruit de la meule diminue,
où l'on se lève au chant de l'oiseau,
où toutes les chanteuses s'affaiblissent.
⁵ C'est l'époque où
l'on redoute ce qui est haut,
où l'on a des terreurs en chemin,
où l'amandier fleurit,
où la sauterelle devient lourde
et où la câpre n'a plus d'effet,
car l'homme s'en va vers son habitation éternelle
et les pleureurs parcourent les rues. 
⁶ Souviens-toi de ton créateur
avant que le cordon d'argent ne se détache,
que le vase d'or ne se brise,
que la cruche ne se casse à la source
et que la poulie ne tombe, rompue, dans le puits,
⁷ avant que la poussière ne retourne à la terre,
comme elle y était,
et que l'esprit ne retourne à Dieu,
celui qui l'a donné!
⁸ Comble de l'inconsistance,
dit l'Ecclésiaste,
tout n'est que fumée!

Crainte de Dieu et obéissance

⁹ L'Ecclésiaste n'a pas seulement été un sage, il a aussi enseigné la connaissance au peuple et il a examiné, recherché, mis en ordre un grand nombre de proverbes. ¹⁰ L'Ecclésiaste s'est efforcé de trouver des paroles agréables, des écrits pleins de droiture et des paroles vraies. ¹¹ Les paroles des sages sont comme des aiguillons et, rassemblées en un recueil, elles sont comme des clous plantés; elles sont données par un seul berger. ¹² Attention, mon fils, à ce qui pourrait y être ajouté! On n'en finirait pas, si l'on voulait faire un grand nombre de livres, et beaucoup d'étude fatigue le corps.
¹³ Ecoutons la conclusion de tout ce discours: «Crains Dieu et respecte ses commandements, car c'est ce que doit faire tout homme. ¹⁴ En effet, Dieu amènera toute œuvre en jugement, et ce jugement portera sur tout ce qui est caché, que ce soit bon ou mauvais.»
