   ¹ Si quelqu'un vole un boeuf ou un mouton et qu'il le tue ou le vende, il rendra cinq boeufs pour le boeuf et quatre moutons pour le mouton. ² Si on prend un voleur par effraction, qu'on le frappe et qu'il meure, on n'est pas coupable de meurtre. ³ Si le soleil est levé, on est coupable de meurtre. Le voleur doit indemniser ; s'il n'a pas de quoi, on le vendra pour ce qu'il a volé. ⁴ Si ce qu'il a volé, que ce soit un boeuf, un âne ou un mouton, se retrouve vivant en sa possession, il indemnisera en donnant le double. ⁵ Lorsque quelqu'un, en faisant pâturer dans un champ ou un verger, laissera aller ses bêtes pâturer dans le champ d'autrui, il indemnisera en donnant ce qu'il a de mieux dans son champ et dans son verger. ⁶ Lorsqu'un feu éclatera et gagnera des épines et dévorera du blé en meule ou du blé sur pied ou un champ, celui qui aura allumé ce feu sera tenu d'indemniser.
   ⁷ Lorsqu'un homme donnera en garde à un autre de l'argent ou des meubles, et qu'ils se trouveront avoir été volés de la maison de celui-ci, si l'on découvre le voleur, il indemnisera en rendant le double ; ⁸ Si on ne découvre pas le voleur, le maître de la maison comparaîtra devant Dieu pour [qu'on sache] s'il n'a pas mis la main sur le bien de son prochain. ⁹ Quel que soit le corps d'un délit, boeuf, âne, mouton, manteau ou tout objet perdu dont quelqu'un dira : C'est bien celui-là ! l'affaire des deux parties sera portée devant Dieu ; celui que Dieu condamnera, rendra le double à son prochain. ¹⁰ Lorsqu'un homme donnera en garde à un autre un âne, ou un boeuf, ou un mouton, ou une pièce de bétail quelconque, et qu'elle périra ou aura un membre cassé ou sera emmenée sans qu'il y ait de témoin, ¹¹ le serment de l'Eternel interviendra entre les deux parties pour qu'on sache si le dépositaire n'a pas mis la main sur le bien de l'autre ; et le propriétaire de la bête acceptera [ce serment] et l'autre n'aura point à indemniser. ¹² Si on la lui a volée, il en indemnisera le propriétaire. ¹³ Si elle a été mise en pièces [par une bête féroce], il en produira les restes comme preuve ; il n'indemnisera point de la bête déchirée. ¹⁴ Lorsqu'un homme empruntera d'un autre une bête et qu'elle se cassera un membre ou périra, sans que le propriétaire soit avec elle, l'emprunteur aura à indemniser ; ¹⁵ si son propriétaire est avec elle, on n'indemnisera point. Si c'est une bête louée, elle était là pour son prix de louage.
   ¹⁶ Lorsqu'un homme séduit une vierge qui n'est pas fiancée et a commerce avec elle, il doit payer un douaire en la prenant pour femme. ¹⁷ Si le père refuse positivement de la lui donner, il payera l'argent qu'on donne pour douaire des vierges. ¹⁸ Tu ne laisseras pas vivre de magicienne. ¹⁹ Quiconque a commerce avec une bête devra être mis à mort. ²⁰ Qui sacrifie aux dieux, si ce n'est à l'Eternel, à lui seul, sera détruit comme anathème. ²¹ Tu ne feras pas de tort à l'étranger et tu ne l'opprimeras pas, car vous avez été des étrangers dans le pays d'Egypte. ²² Vous ne chagrinerez jamais ni veuve, ni orphelin. ²³ Si tu les chagrines en quelque manière, car, s'ils viennent à crier à moi, j'entendrai certainement leur cri, ²⁴ ma colère s'enflammera, et je vous tuerai par l'épée, et vos femmes seront des veuves et vos fils des orphelins.
   ²⁵ Si tu prêtes de l'argent à quelqu'un de mon peuple, au pauvre qui est avec toi, n'agis pas à son égard comme celui qui fait métier de prêter ; vous ne lui imposerez point d'intérêt. ²⁶ Si tu prends en gage le manteau de ton prochain, tu le lui rendras avant que le soleil se couche ; ²⁷ car c'est tout ce qu'il a pour se couvrir, c'est le vêtement de sa peau ; sur quoi coucherait-il ? Et s'il crie à moi, j'entendrai, car je suis compatissant. ²⁸ Tu ne blasphémeras pas contre Dieu et tu ne maudiras pas celui qui est un prince dans ton peuple. ²⁹ Tu ne différeras pas [le tribut] de ce qui remplit [tes champs] et de ce qui découle [de tes vignes] ; tu me donneras le premier-né de tes fils. ³⁰ Tu feras de même de celui de tes boeufs et de tes moutons : il sera sept jours avec sa mère, le huitième jour tu me le donneras. ³¹ Vous me serez des hommes saints : vous ne mangerez point la chair qui se trouvera dans les champs, les animaux déchirés ; vous jetterez cela aux chiens.

Exode 23

   ¹ Tu n'accueilleras pas de vain bruit.
Ne prête pas ton concours à un méchant en lui servant de témoin à charge. ² Tu ne te mettras pas à la suite du grand nombre pour mal faire, et tu ne déposeras pas dans un procès en te conformant au grand nombre pour faire fléchir [le droit]. ³ Et tu ne favoriseras point un faible dans son procès. ⁴ Lorsque tu rencontreras le boeuf de ton adversaire ou son âne égaré, tu ne manqueras pas de le lui ramener. ⁵ Lorsque tu verras l'âne de celui qui te hait abattu sous sa charge, tu te garderas bien de l'abandonner, tu le déchargeras avec lui. ⁶ Tu ne feras point fléchir le droit de l'indigent dans son procès, ⁷ Eloigne-toi d'une cause mensongère et ne mets pas à mort celui qui est innocent et juste, car je n'absoudrai point un coupable. ⁸ Tu n'accepteras pas de présents, car les présents aveuglent les clairvoyants et ruinent les bonnes causes. ⁹ Tu n'opprimeras pas l'étranger : vous savez vous-mêmes ce que c'est que d'être étranger, puisque vous avez été des étrangers dans le pays d'Egypte.
   ¹⁰ Pendant six années tu ensemenceras ta terre et en récolteras les produits ; ¹¹ mais la septième tu les laisseras et les abandonneras, et les indigents de ton peuple les mangeront, et ce qu'ils laisseront sera mangé par les bêtes sauvages. C'est aussi ce que tu feras pour tes vignes et tes oliviers. ¹² Pendant six jours tu feras ce que tu as à faire, mais le septième jour tu cesseras, afin que ton boeuf et ton âne aient du repos et que le fils de ta servante et l'étranger reprennent haleine. ¹³ Vous vous tiendrez sur vos gardes dans toutes les choses que je vous ai prescrites ; vous ne mentionnerez pas de nom de dieux étrangers et on n'en entendra pas dans ta bouche. ¹⁴ Trois fois dans l'année tu me célébreras une fête. ¹⁵ Tu observeras la fête des pains sans levain. Pendant sept jours tu mangeras des pains sans levain selon que je te l'ai ordonné, au temps fixé du mois d'Abib, car c'est alors que tu es sorti d'Egypte. Et l'on ne paraîtra pas devant moi les mains vides.
   ¹⁶ Et la fête de la moisson, fête des prémices de tes produits, de ce que tu sèmeras dans les champs.
Et la fête de la récolte, à la fin de l'année, quand tu rentreras des champs tes produits. ¹⁷ Trois fois l'année toute ta population mâle paraîtra devant le Souverain, l'Eternel.
   ¹⁸ Tu n'associeras pas à du pain levé le sang de mon sacrifice.
Et la graisse de ma victime de fête ne demeurera pas jusqu'au matin.
   ¹⁹ Tu apporteras à la maison de l'Eternel ton Dieu les premières prémices de ton sol.
Tu ne feras pas bouillir un chevreau dans le lait de sa mère.
   ²⁰ Voici, j'envoie un ange devant toi pour te garder dans le chemin et te faire entrer dans le lieu que j'ai préparé. ²¹ Prends garde à lui et obéis à sa voix. Ne lui résiste pas, car il ne vous pardonnerait pas votre rébellion, parce que mon nom est en lui. ²² Mais si tu obéis fidèlement à sa voix et que tu fasses tout ce que je dis, je serai un ennemi pour tes ennemis et un adversaire pour tes adversaires. ²³ Car mon ange marchera devant toi et te fera entrer dans le pays des Amorrhéens, des Héthiens, des Phéréziens, des Cananéens, des Héviens et des Jébusiens, et je les détruirai. ²⁴ Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant leurs dieux et ne les serviras pas ; et tu n'imiteras pas leurs pratiques, mais tu devras renverser leurs statues et mettre en pièces leurs monuments. ²⁵ Et vous servirez l'Eternel votre Dieu. Et il bénira ton pain et ton eau, et j'éloignerai de toi les maladies. ²⁶ Il n'y aura dans ton pays ni femme dont les enfants meurent avant de naître, ni femme stérile. Je n'abrégerai pas tes jours. ²⁷ Je déchaînerai devant toi ma terreur et j'épouvanterai tous ceux chez qui tu arriveras, et je mettrai en fuite devant toi tous tes ennemis. ²⁸ Et j'enverrai les frelons devant toi, et ils chasseront de devant toi les Héviens, les Cananéens et les Héthiens. ²⁹ Je ne les chasserai pas de devant toi en une seule année, de peur que le pays ne devienne un désert et que les bêtes sauvages ne soient en force contre toi. ³⁰ C'est peu à peu que je les chasserai de devant toi, jusqu'à ce que tu sois en nombre et que tu occupes le pays. ³¹ Et je te donnerai pour frontières la mer Rouge et la mer des Philistins, le désert et le fleuve ; car je te livrerai les habitants du pays et tu les chasseras de devant toi. ³² Tu ne feras pas alliance avec eux et leurs dieux. ³³ Ils n'habiteront pas dans ton pays, de peur qu'ils ne te fassent pécher contre moi : tu servirais leurs dieux, ce qui te serait funeste.

Exode 24

   ¹ Et à Moïse, il lui dit : Monte vers l'Eternel, toi et Aaron, Nadab, Abihu et soixante-dix des Anciens d'Israël, et prosternez-vous de loin. ² Et Moïse seul s'approchera de l'Eternel, mais eux n'approcheront pas, et le peuple ne montera pas avec lui. ³ Et Moïse alla rapporter au peuple toutes les paroles de l'Eternel et toutes les lois. Et tout le peuple répondit d'une voix : Tout ce qu'a dit l'Eternel, nous le ferons. ⁴ Et Moïse écrivit toutes les paroles de l'Eternel, et, le lendemain, dès le matin, il érigea un autel au pied de la montagne et douze pierres pour les douze tribus d'Israël. ⁵ Et il envoya les jeunes gens d'Israël, et ils offrirent à l'Eternel des holocaustes et sacrifièrent des taureaux en sacrifices d'actions de grâces. ⁶ Et Moïse prit la moitié du sang et la mit dans des bassins ; et l'autre moitié du sang, il l'avait répandue sur l'autel. ⁷ Et il prit le Livre de l'alliance et le lut au peuple. Et ils dirent : Tout ce qu'a dit l'Eternel, nous le ferons et y obéirons. ⁸ Alors Moïse prit le sang et le répandit sur le peuple, et il dit : Voici le sang de l'alliance que l'Eternel a conclue avec vous, sur la base de toutes ces paroles-là.
   ⁹ Et Moïse monta avec Aaron, Nadab, Abihu et soixante-dix des Anciens d'Israël. ¹⁰ Et ils virent le Dieu d'Israël. Sous ses pieds c'était comme un pavement de saphirs et comme le ciel même pour la pureté. ¹¹ Et l'Eternel ne toucha pas les élus des fils d'Israël ; ils virent Dieu et mangèrent et burent.
   ¹² Et l'Eternel dit à Moïse : Monte vers moi sur la montagne et restes-y, et je te donnerai les tables de pierre, la loi et les préceptes que j'ai écrits pour leur enseignement. ¹³ Et Moïse, avec Josué, son serviteur, se leva, et Moïse monta à la montagne de Dieu. ¹⁴ Il avait dit aux Anciens d'Israël : Attendez-nous ici jusqu'à ce que nous revenions vers vous. Vous avez avec vous Aaron et Hur. Qui aura quelque affaire pourra s'adresser à eux. ¹⁵ Et Moïse monta à la montagne, et la nuée couvrit la montagne. ¹⁶ Et la gloire de l'Eternel reposa sur le mont Sinaï, et la nuée le couvrit pendant six jours. Et il appela Moïse le septième jour, du milieu de la nuée. ¹⁷ Et la gloire de l'Eternel apparaissait aux fils d'Israël comme un feu dévorant au sommet de la montagne. ¹⁸ Et Moïse entra dans la nuée et monta à la montagne. Et Moïse fut sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits.

   ¹ If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. ² If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. ³ If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. ⁴ If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double. ⁵ If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution. ⁶ If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
   ⁷ If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. ⁸ If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods. ⁹ For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour. ¹⁰ If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it: ¹¹ Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. ¹² And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. ¹³ If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn. ¹⁴ And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good. ¹⁵ But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire.

   ¹ Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. ² Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment: ³ Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause. ⁴ If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. ⁵ If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him. ⁶ Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. ⁷ Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked. ⁸ And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous. ⁹ Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
   ¹⁰ And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof: ¹¹ But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. Exode 24

   ¹ And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off. ² And Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him. ³ And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do. ⁴ And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. ⁵ And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD. ⁶ And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. ⁷ And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient. ⁸ And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.
   ⁹ Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel: ¹⁰ And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. ¹¹ And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.
   ¹² And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them. ¹³ And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God. ¹⁴ And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them. ¹⁵ And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount. ¹⁶ And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud. ¹⁷ And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. ¹⁸ And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.
