Os 4-36 (Annotée Neuchâtel)

   ¹ Ecoutez la parole de l'Eternel, fils d'Israël, car l'Eternel a un procès avec les habitants du pays, parce qu'il n'y a ni vérité, ni bonté, ni connaissance de Dieu dans le pays. ² On se parjure, on tue, on vole, on commet adultère ! Ils font effraction, et le sang versé touche le sang versé. ³ C'est pourquoi le pays sera dans le deuil et tous ses habitants dans la langueur, avec les bêtes des champs et les oiseaux des cieux ; et même les poissons de la mer disparaîtront. ⁴ Mais que nul ne conteste et que nul ne réclame ! Car ton peuple est comme celui qui aurait procès avec le sacrificateur. ⁵ Tu trébucheras de jour, le prophète aussi trébuchera avec toi de nuit ; et je ferai périr ta mère.
   ⁶ Mon peuple périt, faute de connaissance. Puisque tu as rejeté la connaissance, je te rejetterai de mon sacerdoce. Tu as oublié la loi de ton Dieu ; moi aussi, j'oublierai tes enfants. ⁷ Plus ils se sont multipliés, plus ils ont péché contre moi ; je changerai leur gloire en ignominie. ⁸ Ils vivent des péchés de mon peuple et ne demandent que ses iniquités. ⁹ Aussi il en sera du sacrificateur comme du peuple ; je le punirai de ses voies et lui rendrai ce qu'il a fait. ¹⁰ Ils mangeront et ne seront pas rassasiés ; ils se prostitueront et ne multiplieront pas, car ils ont abandonné le service de l'Eternel. ¹¹ La luxure, le vin et le moût ôtent le sens.
   ¹² Mon peuple consulte le bois, et c'est son bâton qui l'instruit ; car un esprit de prostitution les a égarés : pour se prostituer, ils se sont soustraits à leur Dieu. ¹³ Ils offrent des sacrifices sur les sommets des montagnes et de l'encens sur les collines, sous le chêne, le peuplier, le térébinthe, parce que l'ombrage en est bon. C'est pourquoi vos filles se prostituent et vos jeunes femmes commettent adultère. ¹⁴ Je ne punirai pas vos filles pour leurs prostitutions et vos jeunes femmes pour leurs adultères, car eux-mêmes vont à l'écart avec les prostituées et sacrifient avec les courtisanes, et le peuple sans intelligence court à sa perte. ¹⁵ Si tu te prostitues, ô Israël, que Juda ne se rende point coupable. N'allez pas à Guilgal et ne montez pas à Beth-Aven, et ne jurez pas en disant : L'Eternel est vivant ! ¹⁶ Parce qu'Israël a été rétif comme une génisse rétive, maintenant l'Eternel les fera paître comme des agneaux dans un pays ouvert. ¹⁷ Ephraïm se fait compagnon des idoles, laisse-le faire ! ¹⁸ Ont-ils fini de boire, les voilà tous à la prostitution ! Leurs chefs ont la passion de l'ignominie. ¹⁹ Le vent les a emportés sur ses ailes, et ils recueilleront la honte de leurs sacrifices.

Osée 5

   ¹ Entendez ceci, sacrificateurs ; écoutez, maison d'Israël ; maison du roi, prêtez l'oreille ; car c'est pour vous qu'est la sentence, parce que vous avez été un piège à Mitspa, et un filet sur le Thabor. ² Leurs sacrifices ont creusé [l'abîme de] leur rébellion ; je vais vous reprendre tous. ³ Je connais Ephraïm, et Israël ne m'est point caché : or, tu t'es prostitué, Ephraïm ; Israël s'est souillé. ⁴ Leurs oeuvres ne leur permettent pas de revenir à leur Dieu, car un esprit de prostitution est au milieu d'eux, et ils ne connaissent pas l'Eternel. ⁵ L'orgueil d'Israël dépose contre lui Israël et Ephraïm tomberont par leur iniquité ; Juda aussi est tombé avec eux. ⁶ Avec leurs moutons et leurs boeufs ils iront chercher l'Eternel, et ils ne le trouveront point ; il s'est dérobé à eux. ⁷ Ils ont trompé l'Eternel, car ils ont enfanté des fils étrangers ; la prochaine lune les dévorera avec leurs biens.
   ⁸ Sonnez du cor à Guibéa, du clairon à Rama ; jetez des cris d'alarme à Beth-Aven ! Garde à toi, Benjamin ! ⁹ Ephraïm sera dévasté au jour du châtiment ; j'annonce une chose certaine dans les tribus d'Israël. ¹⁰ Les princes de Juda ont été comme des gens qui déplacent les bornes : je répandrai sur eux ma colère comme de l'eau. ¹¹ Ephraïm est opprimé, accablé justement, parce qu'il a consenti à suivre des règlements. ¹² Et moi, je suis comme la teigne pour Ephraïm, comme la vermoulure pour la maison de Juda. ¹³ Quand Ephraïm a vu sa maladie, et Juda sa blessure, Ephraïm est allé vers Assur, et il a envoyé vers un roi qui prit son parti ; mais celui-ci ne pourra vous guérir, et votre plaie ne sera point cicatrisée. ¹⁴ Car je serai comme le lion pour Ephraïm, et comme le jeune lion pour la maison de Juda ; moi, moi, je déchirerai et m'en irai ; j'emporterai ma proie et on ne me l'arrachera pas. ¹⁵ Je m'en irai, je rentrerai dans ma demeure jusqu'à ce qu'ils se reconnaissent coupables et qu'ils cherchent ma face. Dans leur détresse, ils me réclameront.

Osée 6

   ¹ Venez et retournons à l'Eternel ! Car c'est lui qui a déchiré, il nous guérira. Qu'il frappe, il bandera nos plaies. ² En deux jours, il nous fera revivre ; le troisième jour, il nous relèvera, et nous vivrons devant sa face. ³ Connaissons l'Eternel, appliquons-nous à le connaître ; son lever est certain comme celui de l'aurore, et il viendra à nous comme la pluie tardive arrosant la terre.
   ⁴ Que te ferai-je, Ephraïm ? que te ferai-je, Juda ? Votre amour est comme une nuée du matin, comme la rosée qui passe de bonne heure. ⁵ C'est pourquoi j'ai taillé en pièces par les prophètes, je les ai tués par la parole de ma bouche ; ton jugement, voilà la lumière qui se lèvera ! ⁶ Car je prends plaisir à l'amour, et non au sacrifice, à la connaissance de Dieu plus qu'aux holocaustes. ⁷ Mais eux, à la façon des hommes, ont transgressé l'alliance ; là, ils m'ont trompé. ⁸ Galaad est une, ville de malfaiteurs, remplie de traces de sang. ⁹ Comme des bandits guettent les gens, ainsi une bande de prêtres, assassine sur la route du côté de Sichem ; car ils commettent des scélératesses. ¹⁰ Dans la maison d'Israël, j'ai vu des horreurs ; là est la prostitution, la souillure d'Israël. ¹¹ Juda même a fait de toi une moisson quand j'ai relevé mon peuple.

Osée 7

   ¹ Dès que je me suis mis à traiter Israël, on a pu voir l'iniquité d'Ephraïm et les méchancetés de Samarie ; car ils ont pratiqué le mensonge ; le voleur va pénétrer dans la maison, les brigands tiennent la campagne. ² Et ils ne se disent pas que je me souviens de toute leur malice. Maintenant leurs forfaits les ont environnés, ils sont là devant moi. ³ Par leur méchanceté ils égaient le roi, et les princes par leurs tromperies. ⁴ Tous ils sont adultères, pareils à un four allumé par un boulanger qui cesse de veiller depuis qu'il a pétri la pâte jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit levée. ⁵ Au jour de notre roi, les princes l'ont rendu malade par l'ardeur du vin ; il a étendu la main avec les moqueurs. ⁶ Quand, dans leur complot, ils ont mis leurs coeurs comme dans un four, leur boulanger a dormi toute la nuit. Le matin, il a été embrasé pareil à une flamme ardente. ⁷ Tous sont chauffés comme un four, et ils dévorent leurs juges. Tous leurs rois sont tombés sans qu'aucun ait crié à moi.
   ⁸ Ephraïm se mêle avec les peuples ; Ephraïm est un gâteau qu'on n'a pas retourné. ⁹ Des étrangers ont dévoré sa force, et lui ne l'a pas su ; sa tête s'est parsemée de cheveux blancs, et lui ne l'a pas su. ¹⁰ Mais l'orgueil d'Israël témoigne contre lui : ils ne se sont point retournés vers l'Eternel leur Dieu, et ils ne l'ont point recherché, avec tout cela ! ¹¹ Ephraïm est devenu comme une colombe simple et sans intelligence : ils appellent l'Egypte, ils vont en Assyrie. ¹² Pendant qu'ils vont, j'étends mon filet sur eux ; je les ferai tomber comme les oiseaux du ciel, je les châtierai comme on l'a annoncé à leur assemblée. ¹³ Malheur à eux, car ils ont fui loin de moi ; ruine sur eux, car ils m'ont été infidèles ! Et moi, je les délivrerais, mais eux disent contre moi des mensonges. ¹⁴ Ils ne crient point à moi dans leur coeur, quand ils se lamentent sur leurs lits ; ils se tourmentent au sujet du froment et du moût, se détournant de moi. ¹⁵ C'est moi qui les instruisais, qui fortifiais leurs bras, et ils méditent du mal contre moi ! ¹⁶ Ils se tournent, mais non pas en haut ; ils sont comme un arc trompeur ; leurs chefs tomberont par l'épée à cause de la colère de leurs langues... Cela fera rire d'eux au pays d'Egypte !

Osée 8

   ¹ A ta bouche la trompette! [On voit] comme un aigle sur la maison de l'Eternel.... parce qu'ils ont transgressé mon alliance et qu'ils ont été infidèles à ma loi. ² Ils crieront à moi : Mon Dieu, nous t'avons connu, nous Israël ! ³ Israël, le bien l'a dégoûté ; l'ennemi le poursuivra. ⁴ Ils ont fait des rois sans moi ; ils ont établi des chefs à mon insu ; de leur or et de leur argent ils se sont fait des idoles, pour qu'ils leur fussent ôtés. ⁵ Ton veau m'a dégoûté, Samarie ; ma colère s'est enflammée contre eux : jusques à quand ne pourront-ils être absous ? ⁶ Car il vient d'Israël, un ouvrier l'a fabriqué et il n'est pas Dieu ; car il sera mis en pièces, le veau de Samarie. ⁷ Parce qu'ils ont semé le vent, ils moissonneront la tempête ; rien ne lèvera, le germe ne donnera pas de farine ; qu'il en donne, les étrangers la dévoreront.
   ⁸ Israël est dévoré : déjà ils sont devenus parmi les nations comme une chose dont on ne fait point cas. ⁹ Car ils sont montés en Assyrie ; onagre farouche, Ephraïm s'est acheté des amants. ¹⁰ Ils ont beau faire des présents aux nations, je vais les rassembler contre eux, et ils trembleront bientôt sous la charge du roi des princes. ¹¹ Ephraïm a multiplié les autels en péchant ; ces autels lui ont tourné à péché. ¹² Que je lui écrive mille exemplaires de ma loi, ils seront regardés comme chose étrangère. ¹³ Les sacrifices qu'ils m'offrent... ils sacrifient de la viande et ils la mangent ; l'Eternel ne les agrée pas. Maintenant il se souviendra de leur iniquité et il punira leurs péchés : ils retourneront en Egypte ! ¹⁴ Israël a oublié son Créateur et il a bâti des palais, et Juda a multiplié les villes fortes : J'enverrai le feu dans ses villes, et il dévorera leurs châteaux.

Osée 9

   ¹ Ne te réjouis pas, Israël, jusqu'à triompher comme les peuples ; car tu t'es prostitué loin de ton Dieu, tu as aimé le salaire de la prostitution sur toutes les aires à blé. ² Ni l'aire ni la cuve ne les nourrira, le moût les trompera. ³ Ils n'habiteront pas dans la terre de l'Eternel : Ephraïm retournera en Egypte et ils mangeront en Assyrie des choses souillées. ⁴ Ils n'offriront pas de vin à l'Eternel, et leurs sacrifices ne lui sont plus agréables ; c'est comme un pain de deuil dont on ne peut manger sans se souiller. Car leur pain sera pour eux-mêmes, il n'entrera pas dans la maison de l'Eternel. ⁵ Que ferez-vous en un jour de solennité ? en un jour de fête de l'Eternel ? ⁶ Car, voilà, ils sont partis de leur pays dévasté ; l'Egypte les recueillera ; Memphis les ensevelira ; l'argent qu'ils chérissaient, le chardon l'héritera d'eux ; l'épine est dans leurs tentes.
   ⁷ Ils sont venus, les jours de la visitation ; ils sont venus, les jours de la rétribution ; Israël le connaîtra. Le prophète est fou, l'homme inspiré est en délire à cause de la grandeur de ton iniquité et de la grandeur de ton hostilité. ⁸ La sentinelle d'Ephraïm est avec mon Dieu, le prophète... un filet d'oiseleur est sur toutes ses voies ; on l'attaque dans la maison de son Dieu. ⁹ Ils se sont corrompus jusqu'au fond comme aux jours de Guibéa : il se souviendra de leur iniquité, il punira leurs péchés. ¹⁰ J'ai trouvé Israël comme des raisins dans le désert ; comme un fruit précoce sur un jeune figuier, j'ai vu vos pères. Mais ils sont allés à Baal-Péor ; ils se sont consacrés à l'ignominie et sont devenus abominables comme leur amant.
   ¹¹ La gloire d'Ephraïm s'envolera comme un oiseau ; plus d'enfantement, plus de grossesse, plus de conception. ¹² Quand bien même ils élèveraient leurs enfants, je les en priverai avant qu'ils soient devenus hommes ; car malheur à eux si je me retire d'eux ! ¹³ Ephraïm, quand j'étends mon regard jusqu'à Tyr, est planté dans une belle prairie ; Ephraïm va mener ses fils à l'égorgeur ! ¹⁴ Donne-leur, ô Eternel... que leur donneras-tu ?... donne-leur un sein stérile et des mamelles taries. ¹⁵ Tout leur mal est à Guilgal ; car c'est là que je les ai pris en haine ! A cause de la méchanceté de leurs actions, je les chasserai de ma maison ; je n'aurai plus d'amour pour eux ; tous leurs chefs sont des rebelles. ¹⁶ Ephraïm est frappé : sa racine est séchée, ils ne porteront pas de fruit ; si même ils enfantent, je ferai mourir leurs enfants chéris. ¹⁷ Mon Dieu les rejettera, parce qu'ils ne l'ont pas écouté, et ils seront errants parmi les nations.

Osée 10

   ¹ Israël est une vigne luxuriante qui se charge de fruit : plus il a eu de fruit, plus il a multiplié ses autels ; plus le pays a été beau, plus belles il a fait les statues. ² Leur coeur est hypocrite : maintenant ils en porteront la peine ; il abattra leurs autels, il détruira leurs statues. ³ Maintenant ils vont dire : Nous n'avons pas de roi, parce que nous n'avons pas craint l'Eternel, et le roi que fera-t-il pour nous ? ⁴ Ils disent beaucoup de paroles, faisant de vains serments, concluant des alliances, et le jugement éclôt comme le pavot sur les sillons des champs. ⁵ Les habitants de Samarie ont peur pour les veaux de Beth-Aven ; car son peuple mène deuil sur lui, et ses prêtres tremblent pour lui, pour sa gloire qu'on lui a ravie. ⁶ Lui aussi sera transporté en Assyrie en offrande au roi vengeur ; la honte saisira Ephraïm ; Israël sera confus de ses desseins. ⁷ Samarie est anéantie, son roi est comme un fétu sur la face de l'eau. ⁸ Les hauts lieux d'Aven, péché d'Israël, seront détruits ; l'épine et la ronce monteront sur leurs autels. Ils diront aux montagnes : Couvrez-nous ! et aux collines : Tombez sur nous !
   ⁹ Depuis le temps de Guibéa tu as péché, ô Israël ! Ils sont encore là ! Ne les atteindra-t-elle pas à Guibéa, la guerre contre les fils d'iniquité ? ¹⁰ Je les châtierai à mon gré, et des peuples seront rassemblés contre eux quand on les liera à leurs deux péchés. ¹¹ Ephraïm était une génisse apprise à fouler le blé et y prenant plaisir ; et moi j'ai fait passer sous le joug son beau cou ; j'attellerai Ephraïm, Juda labourera, Jacob traînera sa herse. ¹² Faites vos semailles selon la justice ; moissonnez selon la bonté, défrichez vos jachères ; il est temps de chercher l'Eternel jusqu'à ce qu'il vienne et fasse pleuvoir sur vous la justice. ¹³ Vous avez labouré la méchanceté ; vous avez moissonné l'iniquité ; vous avez mangé le fruit du mensonge ; car tu t'es confié en ta propre voie, dans le grand nombre de tes hommes forts. ¹⁴ Le tumulte va s'élever parmi ton peuple et toutes tes forteresses seront dévastées, comme Salman dévasta Beth-Arbel au jour de la guerre où la mère fût écrasée sur les enfants. ¹⁵ Voilà ce que vous a fait Béthel, à cause de votre suprême méchanceté. Au point du jour, le roi d'Israël est entièrement anéanti.

Osée 11

   ¹ Quand Israël était enfant, je l'aimai ; et dès l'Egypte j'ai appelé mon fils. ² Plus on l'a appelé, plus il s'est éloigné ; ils offrent des sacrifices aux Baals et de l'encens aux images taillées. ³ Et moi, j'apprenais à marcher à Ephraïm en le soutenant par les bras ; et ils n'ont pas compris que je les soignais. ⁴ Je les menais par des cordeaux d'humanité et par des liens d'amour, et j'ai fait pour eux comme si l'on soulevait un joug de dessus leurs mâchoires, et je les ai fait manger à leur aise. ⁵ Non, il ne retournera pas au pays d'Egypte ; c'est Assur qui sera son roi ; car ils ont refusé de se retourner. ⁶ L'épée sera brandie dans ses villes ; elle mettra en pièces les verrous et dévorera, à cause de leurs desseins. ⁷ Mon peuple est suspendu à sa révolte ; on les appelle en haut, aucun d'eux ne lève les yeux.
   ⁸ Comment te laisserais-je, Ephraïm, te livrerais-je, Israël ? Comment te laisserais-je devenir comme Adma, te rendrais-je pareil à Tséboïm ? Mon coeur se retourne en moi, et mes compassions aussi s'émeuvent. ⁹ Je ne donnerai pas cours à l'ardeur de ma colère, je ne détruirai pas de nouveau Ephraïm ; car je suis Dieu et non pas homme ; au milieu de toi est un Saint, et je ne viendrai pas dans ma fureur. ¹⁰ Ils suivront l'Eternel : comme un lion, il rugira ; quand il rugira, lui, ses fils partiront tremblants de l'Occident. ¹¹ Tremblants comme des passereaux, ils partiront d'Egypte, et, comme des colombes, du pays d'Assur ; et je les ferai habiter dans leurs maisons. Ainsi a dit l'Eternel.

Osée 12

   ¹ Ephraïm m'a environné de mensonge, et la maison d'Israël de fraudes ; Juda aussi est en révolte contre Dieu et contre les saints qui sont fidèles. ² Ephraïm poursuit le vent et court après le vent d'orient ; il accumule tout le jour mensonge et violence ; il fait alliance avec Assur, et l'huile s'écoule en Egypte. ³ L'Eternel a aussi procès avec Juda ; il va châtier Jacob selon ses voies, il lui rendra selon ses actions. ⁴ Dans le sein de sa mère, il a pris son frère par le talon, et à l'âge de la force, il a eu le dessus sur Dieu. ⁵ Il a eu le dessus sur l'ange et il a vaincu ; il a pleuré et lui a demandé grâce. Il le trouvera à Béthel, et là il parlera avec nous. ⁶ Or l'Eternel est le Dieu clés armées, son titre est l'Eternel.
   ⁷ Et toi, tu reviendras à ton Dieu ; garde la bonté et la justice, et attends-toi à ton Dieu continuellement. ⁸ Canaan tient dans sa main une balance fausse, il aime à extorquer. ⁹ Ephraïm dit : Et pourtant je me suis enrichi, j'ai acquis du bien ; dans toutes mes affaires, on ne trouvera pas en moi un tort qui soit un péché. ¹⁰ Je suis l'Eternel ton Dieu dès le pays d'Egypte, je te ferai encore habiter dans des tentes comme aux jours de fête. ¹¹ Et j'ai parlé aux prophètes ; j'ai donné moi-même beaucoup de visions, et par les prophètes je parle en similitudes. ¹² Si Galaad est vanité, eux ne sont que néant ; ils ont sacrifié des taureaux à Guilgal : aussi leurs autels seront-ils comme des monceaux de pierres sur les sillons des champs. ¹³ Jacob s'enfuit dans la plaine d'Aram ; Israël servit pour une femme, et pour une femme il gardait les troupeaux. ¹⁴ Et Dieu a fait monter Israël hors d'Egypte par un prophète, et par un prophète il était gardé. ¹⁵ Ephraïm a causé d'amers chagrins : son Seigneur laissera couler son sang sur lui et lui rendra son outrage.

Osée 13

   ¹ Dès qu'Ephraïm parlait, on tremblait ; il s'éleva en Israël et se rendit coupable par Baal, et il mourut. ² Et maintenant ils continuent à pécher, ils ont fait de leur argent une statue de fonte et fabriqué des idoles selon leur idée : tout cela, oeuvre d'artisan. On dit d'eux : Des gens qui sacrifient des hommes et embrassent des veaux ! ³ C'est pourquoi ils seront comme une nuée du matin et comme la rosée qui bientôt se dissipe, comme la balle que le vent chasse de l'aire et comme la fumée qui s'en va par la fenêtre. ⁴ Et moi, je suis l'Eternel ton Dieu depuis le pays d'Egypte ; de Dieu, tu n'en connaîtras pas d'autre ; de Sauveur, il n'y a que moi.
   ⁵ Je t'ai connu dans le désert, dans le pays de la soif. ⁶ Quand ils ont eu de la pâture, ils se sont rassasiés ; une fois rassasiés, leur coeur s'est élevé. C'est ainsi qu'ils m'ont oublié. ⁷ Je suis pour eux comme un lion, je les guetterai au bord du chemin comme une panthère. ⁸ Je fondrai sur eux comme une ourse à qui on a ôté ses petits ; je déchirerai l'enveloppe de leur coeur, et je les dévorerai là comme une lionne ; les bêtes des champs les mettront en pièces.
   ⁹ Ce qui t'a perdu, Israël, c'est que tu es contre moi, contre celui qui est ton secours. ¹⁰ Où est ton roi ? où est-il, pour qu'il te sauve dans toutes tes villes, et où sont tes juges, dont tu as dit : Donne-moi un roi et des princes ? ¹¹ Je te donne un roi dans ma colère, je te le prends dans ma fureur. ¹² L'iniquité d'Ephraïm est liée, son péché gardé. ¹³ Le travail d'enfantement vient pour lui ; c'est un enfant qui n'est pas sage ; le moment venu, il ne se présente pas pour naître. ¹⁴ ...Que je les rachète de la puissance du sépulcre ? Que je les arrache à la mort ? Que je sois ta peste, ô mort ? Que je sois ta ruine, ô sépulcre ?... Le repentir est caché à mes yeux. ¹⁵ Quand il fructifie au milieu de ses frères, le vent d'orient se lève, le souffle de l'Eternel monte du désert : ses sources se dessécheront, ses fontaines tariront. On pillera les amas de tous les objets précieux. ¹⁶ Samarie sera condamnée, parce qu'elle s'est révoltée contre son Dieu. Ils tomberont, frappés par l'épée ; leurs petits enfants seront écrasés, leurs femmes enceintes seront éventrées.

Osée 14

   ¹ Reviens, Israël, à l'Eternel, ton Dieu, car tu es tombé par ton iniquité. ² Prenez avec vous des paroles, et retournez à l'Eternel ; dites-lui : Ote toute iniquité, agrée qu'en retour nous t'offrions au lieu de taureaux les paroles de nos lèvres ! ³ Assur ne nous sauvera pas, nous ne monterons pas sur des chevaux et nous ne dirons plus : notre dieu, à l'ouvrage de nos mains ; car en toi l'orphelin trouve compassion.
   ⁴ Je guérirai leur infidélité, je les aimerai de bon coeur, car ma colère s'est retirée d'eux. ⁵ Je serai comme la rosée pour Israël : il s'épanouira comme le lis, il poussera ses racines comme le Liban. ⁶ Ses rejetons s'étendront, et sa gloire sera comme celle de l'olivier, et son parfum comme celui du Liban. ⁷ Ceux qui habiteront à son ombre feront revivre le froment, ils fleuriront comme la vigne ; son nom sera comme le vin du Liban.

   ¹ Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. ² By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. ³ Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. ⁴ Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest. ⁵ Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
   ⁶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. ⁷ As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame. ⁸ They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity. ⁹ And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings. ¹⁰ For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD. ¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
   ¹² My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God. ¹³ They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery. ¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall. ¹⁵ Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth. ¹⁶ For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place. ¹⁷ Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone. ¹⁸ Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye. ¹⁹ The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

   ¹ Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor. ² And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all. ³ I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled. ⁴ They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD. ⁵ And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity: Judah also shall fall with them. ⁶ They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them. ⁷ They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.
   ⁸ Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin. ⁹ Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be. ¹⁰ The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water. ¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment. ¹² Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness. ¹³ When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound. ¹⁴ For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him. ¹⁵ I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

   ¹ Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. ² After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. ³ Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
   ⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away. ⁵ Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth. ⁶ For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. ⁷ But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me. ⁸ Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood. ⁹ And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness. ¹⁰ I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel: there is the whoredom of Ephraim, Israel is defiled. ¹¹ Also, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people.

   ¹ When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without. ² And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face. ³ They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies. ⁴ They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened. ⁵ In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. ⁶ For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. ⁷ They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.
   ⁸ Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. ⁹ Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. ¹⁰ And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. ¹¹ Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. ¹² When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard. ¹³ Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. ¹⁴ And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. ¹⁵ Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. ¹⁶ They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

Osée 8

   ¹ Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. ² Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee. ³ Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him. ⁴ They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off. ⁵ Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency? ⁶ For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces. ⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
   ⁸ Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure. ⁹ For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers. ¹⁰ Yea, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes. ¹¹ Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin. ¹² I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing. ¹³ They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt. ¹⁴ For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

Osée 9

   ¹ Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every cornfloor. ² The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her. ³ They shall not dwell in the LORD's land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria. ⁴ They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD. ⁵ What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD? ⁶ For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: the pleasant places for their silver, nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.
   ⁷ The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred. ⁸ The watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God. ⁹ They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins. ¹⁰ I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
   ¹¹ As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception. ¹² Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them! ¹³ Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer. ¹⁴ Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. ¹⁵ All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters. ¹⁶ Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb. ¹⁷ My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

Osée 10

   ¹ Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images. ² Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images. ³ For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us? ⁴ They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field. ⁵ The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. ⁶ It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. ⁷ As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water. ⁸ The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.
   ⁹ O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them. ¹⁰ It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows. ¹¹ And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods. ¹² Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. ¹³ Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. ¹⁴ Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children. ¹⁵ So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.

Osée 11

   ¹ When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. ² As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images. ³ I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them. ⁴ I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them. ⁵ He shall not return into the land of Egypt, and the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return. ⁶ And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels. ⁷ And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
   ⁸ How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. ⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city. ¹⁰ They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west. ¹¹ They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD. ¹² Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Osée 12

   ¹ Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt. ² The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. ³ He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: ⁴ Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us; ⁵ Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial. ⁶ Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy God continually.
   ⁷ He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress. ⁸ And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin. ⁹ And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast. ¹⁰ I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets. ¹¹ Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields. ¹² And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep. ¹³ And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved. ¹⁴ Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his LORD return unto him.

Osée 13

   ¹ When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died. ² And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves. ³ Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney. ⁴ Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.
   ⁵ I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought. ⁶ According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me. ⁷ Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them: ⁸ I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
   ⁹ O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help. ¹⁰ I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? ¹¹ I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath. ¹² The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid. ¹³ The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children. ¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. ¹⁵ Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels. ¹⁶ Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

Osée 14

   ¹ O israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. ² Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. ³ Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
   ⁴ I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. ⁵ I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. ⁶ His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. ⁷ They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
   ⁸ Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. ⁹ Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.
