Os 4-36 (King James)

   ¹ Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. ² By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. ³ Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. ⁴ Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest. ⁵ Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
   ⁶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. ⁷ As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame. ⁸ They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity. ⁹ And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings. ¹⁰ For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD. ¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
   ¹² My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God. ¹³ They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery. ¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall. ¹⁵ Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth. ¹⁶ For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place. ¹⁷ Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone. ¹⁸ Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye. ¹⁹ The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Osée 5

   ¹ Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor. ² And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all. ³ I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled. ⁴ They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD. ⁵ And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity: Judah also shall fall with them. ⁶ They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them. ⁷ They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.
   ⁸ Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin. ⁹ Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be. ¹⁰ The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water. ¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment. ¹² Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness. ¹³ When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound. ¹⁴ For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him. ¹⁵ I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

Osée 6

   ¹ Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. ² After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. ³ Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
   ⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away. ⁵ Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth. ⁶ For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. ⁷ But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me. ⁸ Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood. ⁹ And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness. ¹⁰ I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel: there is the whoredom of Ephraim, Israel is defiled. ¹¹ Also, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people.

Osée 7

   ¹ When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without. ² And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face. ³ They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies. ⁴ They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened. ⁵ In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. ⁶ For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. ⁷ They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.
   ⁸ Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. ⁹ Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. ¹⁰ And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. ¹¹ Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. ¹² When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard. ¹³ Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. ¹⁴ And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. ¹⁵ Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. ¹⁶ They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

Osée 8

   ¹ Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. ² Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee. ³ Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him. ⁴ They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off. ⁵ Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency? ⁶ For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces. ⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
   ⁸ Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure. ⁹ For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers. ¹⁰ Yea, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes. ¹¹ Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin. ¹² I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing. ¹³ They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt. ¹⁴ For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

Osée 9

   ¹ Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every cornfloor. ² The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her. ³ They shall not dwell in the LORD's land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria. ⁴ They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD. ⁵ What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD? ⁶ For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: the pleasant places for their silver, nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.
   ⁷ The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred. ⁸ The watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God. ⁹ They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins. ¹⁰ I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
   ¹¹ As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception. ¹² Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them! ¹³ Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer. ¹⁴ Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. ¹⁵ All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters. ¹⁶ Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb. ¹⁷ My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

Osée 10

   ¹ Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images. ² Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images. ³ For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us? ⁴ They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field. ⁵ The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. ⁶ It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. ⁷ As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water. ⁸ The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.
   ⁹ O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them. ¹⁰ It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows. ¹¹ And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods. ¹² Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. ¹³ Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. ¹⁴ Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children. ¹⁵ So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.

Osée 11

   ¹ When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. ² As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images. ³ I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them. ⁴ I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them. ⁵ He shall not return into the land of Egypt, and the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return. ⁶ And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels. ⁷ And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
   ⁸ How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. ⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city. ¹⁰ They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west. ¹¹ They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD. ¹² Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Osée 12

   ¹ Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt. ² The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. ³ He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: ⁴ Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us; ⁵ Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial. ⁶ Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy God continually.
   ⁷ He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress. ⁸ And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin. ⁹ And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast. ¹⁰ I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets. ¹¹ Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields. ¹² And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep. ¹³ And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved. ¹⁴ Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his LORD return unto him.

Osée 13

   ¹ When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died. ² And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves. ³ Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney. ⁴ Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.
   ⁵ I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought. ⁶ According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me. ⁷ Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them: ⁸ I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
   ⁹ O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help. ¹⁰ I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? ¹¹ I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath. ¹² The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid. ¹³ The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children. ¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. ¹⁵ Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels. ¹⁶ Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

Osée 14

   ¹ O israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. ² Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. ³ Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
   ⁴ I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. ⁵ I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. ⁶ His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. ⁷ They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
   ⁸ Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. ⁹ Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

Crimes des Israëlites. Menaces de Dieu.

   ¹ Enfants d'Israël, écoutez la parole de l'Eternel ; car l'Eternel a un procès avec les habitants du pays ; parce qu'il n'y a point de vérité, ni de miséricorde, ni de connaissance de Dieu au pays. ² Il n'y a qu'exécration, que mensonge, que meurtre, que larcin et qu'adultère ; ils se sont entièrement débordés, et un meurtre touche l'autre. ³ C'est pourquoi le pays sera en deuil, et tout homme qui y habite sera dans la langueur, avec les bêtes des champs, et les oiseaux des cieux ; même les poissons de la mer périront. ⁴ Quoi qu'il en soit, qu'on ne plaide avec personne, et qu'on ne reprenne personne ; car, quant à ton peuple, ce sont autant de gens qui disputent avec le Sacrificateur. ⁵ Tu tomberas donc en plein jour, et le prophète aussi tombera avec toi de nuit, et j'exterminerai ta mère.
   ⁶ Mon peuple est détruit à cause qu'il est sans science. Parce que tu as rejeté la science, je te rejetterai, afin que tu ne m'exerces plus la sacrificature. Puisque tu as oublié la Loi de ton Dieu, moi aussi j'oublierai tes enfants. ⁷ A mesure qu'ils se sont accrus ils ont péché contre moi : je changerai leur gloire en ignominie. ⁸ Ils mangent les péchés de mon peuple, et ne demandent rien que son iniquité. ⁹ C'est pourquoi le Sacrificateur sera [traité] comme le peuple, et je le visiterai selon son train, et je lui rendrai selon ses actions. ¹⁰ Et ils mangeront, mais ils ne seront point rassasiés ; ils se prostitueront, mais ils ne multiplieront point ; parce qu'ils ont abandonné l'Eternel, pour ne s'y tenir point. ¹¹ La luxure, et le vin, et le moût, ôtent l'entendement.
   ¹² Mon peuple demande avis à son bois, et son bâton lui répond : car l'esprit de fornication [les] a fait errer, et ils ont commis adultère se détournant de leur Dieu. ¹³ Ils sacrifient sur le sommet des montagnes, et font des parfums sur les coteaux, sous les chênes, sous les peupliers, et sous les ormes, parce que leur ombre est bonne ; c'est pourquoi vos filles se prostitueront, et les femmes de vos fils commettront adultère. ¹⁴ Je ne ferai point punition de vos filles quand elles se seront abandonnées, ni des femmes de vos fils, quand elles auront commis adultère ; à cause qu'ils se séparent avec les prostituées, et qu'ils sacrifient avec les femmes débauchées ; ainsi le peuple qui est sans intelligence, sera ruiné. ¹⁵ Si tu commets adultère, ô Israël ! [au moins] que Juda ne se rende point coupable ; n'entrez donc point dans Guilgal, et ne montez point à Beth-aven, et ne jurez point ; l'Eternel est vivant. ¹⁶ Parce qu'Israël a été revêche comme une génisse revêche, l'Eternel les paîtra maintenant comme des agneaux dans des lieux spacieux. ¹⁷ Ephraïm s'est associé aux idoles ; abandonne-le. ¹⁸ Leur breuvage est devenu aigre ; ils n'ont fait que se prostituer ; ils n'aiment qu'à [dire], apportez ; ce n'est qu'ignominie que ses protecteurs. ¹⁹ Le vent l'a enserré dans ses ailes, et ils auront honte de leurs sacrifices.

Osée 5

L'impiété d'Israël et de Juda. Leur ruine.

   ¹ Ecoutez ceci Sacrificateurs, et vous maison d'Israël, soyez attentifs, et [vous] maison du Roi, prêtez l'oreille ; car c est à vous de faire justice ; mais vous êtes devenus [comme] un piège en Mitspa, et comme un rets étendu sur Tabor. ² Et ils ont subtilement inventé les moyens d'égorger les révoltés, mais je les châtierai tous. ³ Je sais qui est Ephraïm, et Israël ne m'est point inconnu : car maintenant, toi, Ephraïm, tu as commis adultère, Israël est souillé. ⁴ Leurs déportements ne permettront point qu'ils retournent à leur Dieu, parce que l'esprit de fornication est au milieu d'eux, et ils ne connaissent point l'Eternel. ⁵ Aussi la fierté d'Israël témoignera contre lui, et Israël et Ephraïm tomberont dans leur iniquité ; Juda aussi tombera avec eux. ⁶ Ils iront avec leurs brebis et leurs boeufs chercher l'Eternel, mais ils ne le trouveront point, il s'est retiré d'avec eux. ⁷ Ils se sont portés infidèlement contre l'Eternel ; car ils ont engendré des enfants étrangers ; maintenant un mois les dévorera avec leurs biens.
   ⁸ Sonnez du cor à Guibha, et de la trompette à Rama ; sonnez avec retentissement à Bethaven ; on est derrière toi, Benjamin. ⁹ Ephraïm sera en désolation au jour de la correction ; je le fais savoir parmi les Tribus d'Israël [comme] une chose certaine. ¹⁰ Les Gouverneurs de Juda sont autant de remueurs de bornes, je répandrai sur eux ma fureur comme de l'eau. ¹¹ Ephraïm est opprimé, il est brisé justement, parce que de son bon gré il est allé après le commandement. ¹² Je serai donc à Ephraïm comme la teigne, et à la maison de Juda, comme la vermoulure. ¹³ Et Ephraïm a vu sa langueur, et Juda sa plaie ; Ephraïm s'en est allé vers le Roi d'Assyrie, et on a envoyé vers le Roi Jareb, mais il ne vous pourra pas guérir, et il ne pansera point la plaie pour vous en délivrer. ¹⁴ Car je serai comme un lion à Ephraïm, et comme un lionceau à la maison de Juda ; c'est moi, c'est moi qui déchirerai, puis je m'en irai ; j'emporterai [la proie], et il n'y aura personne qui me l'ôte. ¹⁵ Je m'en irai, et retournerai en mon lieu, jusqu'à ce qu'ils se reconnaissent coupables, et qu'ils cherchent ma face ; ils me chercheront de grand matin dans leur angoisse.

Osée 6

Regret des Israëlites. Reproches de Dieu.

   ¹ Venez, [diront-ils], et retournons à l'Eternel, car c'est lui qui a déchiré, mais il nous guérira ; il a frappé, mais il nous bandera [nos plaies.] ² Il nous aura remis en vie dans deux jours, et au troisième jour il nous aura rétablis, et nous vivrons en sa présence. ³ Car nous connaîtrons l'Eternel, et nous continuerons à le connaître ; son lever se prépare comme celui du point du jour, et il viendra à nous comme la pluie, comme la pluie de la dernière saison qui humecte la terre.
   ⁴ Que te ferai-je, Ephraïm ? que te ferai-je, Juda ? puisque votre piété est comme une nuée du matin, comme une rosée du matin qui s'en va. ⁵ C'est pourquoi je les ai charpentés par mes Prophètes, je les ai tués par les paroles de ma bouche, et mes jugements sur eux seront [comme] la lumière qui se lève. ⁶ Car je prends plaisir à la miséricorde, et non point aux sacrifices ; et à la connaissance de Dieu, plus qu'aux holocaustes. ⁷ Mais ils ont transgressé l'alliance, comme [si elle eût été] d'un homme, en quoi ils se sont portés perfidement contre moi. ⁸ Galaad est une ville d'ouvriers d'iniquité, rusée à tuer. ⁹ Et comme les bandes des voleurs attendent quelqu'un, ainsi les Sacrificateurs, après avoir comploté, tuent les gens sur le chemin, du côté de Sichem ; car ils exécutent leurs méchants desseins. ¹⁰ J'ai vu une chose infâme dans la maison d'Israël ; là est la prostitution d'Ephraïm, Israël en est souillé. ¹¹ Aussi Juda te moissonnera, quand je ramènerai mon peuple captif.

Osée 7

Crimes des Israëlites et leur impénitence.

   ¹ Comme je guérissais Israël, l'iniquité d'Ephraïm et les méchancetés de Samarie se sont découvertes, car ils ont commis fausseté, et le larron entre, et le brigand détrousse dehors. ² Et ils n'ont point pensé en leur coeur que je me souviens de toute leur malice ; leurs déportements, qui ont été en ma présence, les ont maintenant environnés. ³ Ils réjouissent le Roi par leur malice, et les Gouverneurs par leurs perfidies. ⁴ Eux tous commettent adultère, [étant embrasés] comme un four que le fournier a chauffé, [après qu'il] a cessé d'éveiller depuis que la pâte est pétrie jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit levée. ⁵ Au jour de notre Roi, on a rendu malades les Gouverneurs à force [de leur faire boire] des bouteilles de vin ; il a tendu la main aux bouffons. ⁶ Car ils ont appliqué à leurs embûches leur coeur [embrasé] comme un four ; leur fournier dort toute la nuit, le matin [le four] est embrasé comme un feu accompagné de flamme. ⁷ Ils sont tous échauffés comme un four, et ils dévorent leurs Gouverneurs ; tous leurs Rois sont tombés, et il n'y a aucun d'entre eux qui crie à moi.
   ⁸ Ephraïm même se mêle avec les peuples ; Ephraïm est comme un gâteau qui n'a point été tourné. ⁹ Les étrangers ont dévoré sa force, et il ne l'a point connu ; les cheveux blancs sont déjà parsemés en lui, et il n'en a rien connu. ¹⁰ L'orgueil d'Israël donc rendra témoignage contre lui ; car ils ne se sont point convertis à l'Eternel leur Dieu, et ne l'ont point recherché pour tout cela. ¹¹ Ephraïm est devenu comme une colombe simple, sans entendement ; [car] ils ont réclamé l'Egypte, et sont allés vers le Roi d'Assyrie. ¹² [Mais] quand ils y iront, j'étendrai mon rets sur eux ; et je les abattrai comme les oiseaux des cieux ; je les châtierai, selon qu'on l'a fait entendre dans leur assemblée. ¹³ Malheur à eux, parce qu'ils s'égarent çà et là de moi ; ils seront exposés au dégât ; car ils ont agi méchamment contre moi ; encore les rachèterais-je, mais ils profèrent des mensonges contre moi. ¹⁴ Ils ne crient point vers moi en leur coeur, quand ils hurlent dans leurs lits ; ils se déchiquettent pour le froment et le bon vin, et ils se détournent de moi. ¹⁵ Je les ai châtiés, et j'ai fortifié leurs bras, mais ils ont pensé du mal contre moi. ¹⁶ Ils se retournent, [mais] non point au Souverain ; ils sont devenus comme un arc qui trompe ; les principaux d'entre eux tomberont par l'épée, à cause de la fureur de leur langue ; cela leur tournera en moquerie au pays d'Egypte.

Osée 8

Veau de Samarie. Israël dispersé. Menace contre Israël, et contre Juda.

   ¹ [Crie comme si tu avais] une trompette en ta bouche. [Il vient] comme un aigle contre la Maison de l'Eternel ; parce qu'ils ont transgressé mon alliance, et qu'ils ont agi méchamment contre ma Loi. ² Ils crieront à moi : Mon Dieu ! nous t'avons connu, [dira] Israël. ³ Israël a rejeté le bien ; l'ennemi le poursuivra. ⁴ Ils ont fait régner, mais non pas de ma part ; ils ont établi des Gouverneurs, et je n'en ai rien su ; ils se sont fait des dieux de leur or et de leur argent ; c'est pourquoi ils seront retranchés. ⁵ Samarie, ton veau t'a chassée loin ; ma colère s'est embrasée contre eux ; jusqu'à quand ne pourront-ils point [s'adonner] à l'innocence ? ⁶ Car il est aussi d'Israël, l'orfèvre l'a fait, et il n'est point Dieu ; c'est pourquoi le veau de Samarie sera mis en pièces. ⁷ Parce qu'ils sèment le vent ils recueilleront le tourbillon ; et il n'[y aura] point de blé debout ; le grain ne fera point de farine, et s'il en fait, les étrangers la dévoreront.
   ⁸ Israël est dévoré ; il est maintenant entre les nations comme un vaisseau dont on ne se soucie point. ⁹ Car ils sont montés vers le Roi d'Assyrie qui est un âne sauvage, se tenant seul à part ; Ephraïm a donné des gages à ceux qu'il aimait. ¹⁰ Et parce qu'ils ont donné des gages aux nations, je les assemblerai maintenant ; on y a même commencé quelque peu, à cause de l'impôt [pour] le Roi des Princes. ¹¹ Parce qu'Ephraïm a fait plusieurs autels pour pécher, ils auront des autels pour pécher. ¹² Je lui ai écrit les grandes choses de ma Loi, [mais] elles sont estimées comme des lois étrangères. ¹³ Quant aux sacrifices qui me sont offerts, ils sacrifient de la chair, et la mangent ; [mais] l'Eternel ne les accepte point, et maintenant il se souviendra de leur iniquité, et punira leurs péchés ; ils retourneront en Egypte. ¹⁴ Israël a mis en oubli celui qui l'a fait, et il a bâti des palais ; et Juda a fait plusieurs villes fortes ; c'est pourquoi j'enverrai le feu dans les villes de celui ci, quand il aura dévoré les palais de celui-là.

Osée 9

Prédiction d'une grande famine dans le pays d'Israël. Menaces contre ce Royaume.

   ¹ Israël ne te réjouis point jusqu'à t'égayer comme les [autres] peuples, de ce que tu as commis adultère, [te retirant] loin de ton Dieu. Tu as aimé le salaire [de la fornication] dans toutes les aires de froment. ² L'aire et la cuve ne les repaîtra point, et le vin doux leur mentira. ³ Ils ne demeureront point en la terre de l'Eternel, mais Ephraïm retournera en Egypte, et ils mangeront en Assyrie la viande souillée. ⁴ Ils ne feront point aspersion de vin à l'Eternel, et leurs sacrifices ne lui plairont point ; [mais ils] leur seront comme le pain de deuil ; tous ceux qui en mangeront seront souillés ; parce que leur pain est pour leurs trépassés, il n'entrera point dans la maison de l'Eternel. ⁵ Que ferez-vous aux jours des fêtes solennelles, et aux jours des fêtes de l'Eternel ? ⁶ Car voici, ils s'en sont allés à cause du dégât ; l'Egypte les serrera, Memphis les ensevelira ; on ne désirera que leur argent ; le chardon sera leur héritier, et l'épine sera dans leurs tabernacles.
   ⁷ Les jours de la visitation sont venus, les jours de la rétribution sont venus, et Israël le saura. Les Prophètes sont fous, les hommes de révélation sont insensés à cause de la grandeur de ton iniquité, et de [ta] grande aversion. ⁸ La sentinelle d'Ephraïm est avec mon Dieu ; [mais] le Prophète est un filet d'oiseleur dans tous les chemins d'Ephraïm, il [est] l'aversion contre la maison de son Dieu. ⁹ Ils se sont extrêmement corrompus, comme aux jours de Guibha ; il se souviendra de leur iniquité, il punira leurs péchés. ¹⁰ J'avais, [dira-t-il], trouvé Israël comme des grappes dans un désert ; j'avais vu vos pères comme un premier fruit en un figuier dans son commencement ; [mais] ils sont entrés vers Bahal-péhor, et se sont séparés pour aller après une chose honteuse, et se sont rendus abominables comme ce qu'ils ont aimé.
   ¹¹ La gloire d'Ephraïm s'envolera aussi vite qu'un oiseau, dès la naissance, dès le ventre, et dès la conception. ¹² Que s'ils élèvent leurs enfants, je les en priverai, [tellement que pas un d'entre eux] ne deviendra homme ; car aussi, malheur à eux, quand je me serai retiré d'eux. ¹³ Ephraïm était comme j'ai vu Tyr, plantée en un lieu agréable, mais néanmoins Ephraïm mènera ses fils au meurtrier. ¹⁴ Ô Eternel ! donne-leur ; [mais] que leur donnerais-tu ? donne-leur un sein sujet à avorter, et des mamelles taries. ¹⁵ Toute leur méchanceté est à Guilgal ; c'est pourquoi je les ai là haïs ; je les chasserai de ma maison à cause de la malice de leurs actions ; je ne continuerai plus à les aimer ; tous les principaux d'entre eux sont revêches. ¹⁶ Ephraïm a été frappé ; et leur racine est asséchée, ils ne feront plus de fruit ; et s'ils engendrent [des enfants], je mettrai à mort les [fruits] désirables de leur ventre. ¹⁷ Mon Dieu les rejettera, parce qu'ils ne l'ont point écouté, et ils seront vagabonds parmi les nations.

Osée 10

Prédication de la ruine totale des dix Tribus.

   ¹ Israël est une vigne déserte, elle ne fait de fruit que pour elle-même, il a multiplié des autels selon la multiplication de son fruit, selon la bonté de leur pays, ils ont embelli leurs statues. ² Il a divisé leur coeur, ils vont être traités en coupables, il abattra leurs autels, il détruira leurs statues. ³ Car bientôt ils diront : Nous n'avons point de Roi, parce que nous n'avons point craint l'Eternel ; et que nous ferait un Roi ? ⁴ Ils ont prononcé des paroles, jurant faussement quand ils ont traité alliance ; c'est pourquoi le jugement germera sur les sillons des champs, comme le fiel. ⁵ Les habitants de Samarie seront épouvantés à cause des jeunes vaches de Beth-aven : car le peuple mènera deuil sur son idole ; et les prêtres de ses idoles, qui s'en étaient réjouis, [mèneront deuil] à cause que sa gloire est transportée loin d'elle. ⁶ Même elle sera transportée en Assyrie, pour en faire présent au Roi Jareb ; Ephraïm recevra de la honte, et Israël sera honteux de son conseil. ⁷ Le Roi de Samarie sera retranché, comme l'écume qui est au-dessus de l'eau. ⁸ Et les hauts lieux d'Aven, qui sont le péché d'Israël, seront détruits ; l'épine et le chardon croîtront sur les autels ; et on dira aux montagnes, Couvrez-nous ; et aux coteaux : Tombez sur nous.
   ⁹ Israël, tu as péché dès les jours de Guibha ; ils s'y sont arrêtés ; la bataille qui était contre les pervers, ne les empoigna point à Guibha. ¹⁰ Je les châtierai selon ma volonté, et les peuples seront assemblés contre eux, parce qu'ils se sont attachés aux deux objets de leurs amours. ¹¹ Ephraïm est comme une jeune vache bien dressée, qui aime à fouler [le blé], mais j'ai méprisé la beauté de son cou. Je ferai qu'Ephraïm tirera [la charrue], Juda labourera, Jacob rompra ses mottes. ¹² Semez-vous à la justice, et vous moissonnerez selon la gratuité ; rompez les mottes de terre ; car il est temps de rechercher l'Eternel, jusqu'à ce qu'il vienne, et fasse pleuvoir sur vous la justice. ¹³ Vous avez labouré la méchanceté, et vous avez moissonné la perversité ; vous avez mangé le fruit du mensonge, parce que tu as eu confiance en tes voies, à cause de la multitude de tes hommes forts. ¹⁴ C'est pourquoi un tumulte s'élèvera parmi ton peuple, et on saccagera toutes tes forteresses, comme Salman saccagea Beth-Abel au jour de la bataille, [où] la mère fut écrasée sur les enfants. ¹⁵ Béthel vous fera de même, à cause de la malice de votre méchanceté ; le Roi d'Israël sera entièrement exterminé au point du jour.

Osée 11

Grâces que Dieu avait faites aux Israëlites ; leur ingratitude ; Dieu aura un jour pitié d'eux.

   ¹ Quand Israël était jeune enfant, je l'ai aimé, et j'ai appelé mon fils hors d'Egypte. ² Lorsqu'on les appelait, ils s'en sont allés de devant ceux qui les appelaient ; ils ont sacrifié aux Bahalins, et ont fait des encensements aux images taillées. ³ Et j'ai appris à Ephraïm à marcher ; on l'a porté sur les bras, et ils n'ont point connu que je les avais guéris. ⁴ Je les ai tirés avec des cordeaux d'humanité, et avec des liens d'amitié ; et je leur ai été comme ceux qui enlèveraient le joug de dessus leur cou, et j'ai fait approcher de lui la viande. ⁵ Il ne retournera point au pays d'Egypte ; mais le Roi d'Assyrie sera son Roi, parce qu'ils n'ont point voulu se convertir [à moi]. ⁶ L'épée s'arrêtera dans ses villes, et consumera ses forces, et les dévorera, à cause de leurs conseils. ⁷ Et mon peuple pend attaché à sa rébellion contre moi ; et on le rappelle au Souverain, mais pas un d'eux ne l'exalte.
   ⁸ Comment te mettrais-je, Ephraïm ? [Comment] te livrerais-je, Israël ? comment te mettrais-je comme j'ai mis Adama, et te ferais-je tel que Tséboïm ? Mon coeur est agité dans moi, mes compassions se sont toutes ensemble échauffées. ⁹ Je n'exécuterai point l'ardeur de ma colère, je ne retournerai point à détruire Ephraïm ; car je suis le [Dieu] Fort, et non pas un homme ; je suis le Saint au milieu de toi, et je n'entrerai point dans la ville. ¹⁰ Ils marcheront après l'Eternel ; il rugira comme un lion ; et quand il rugira, les enfants accourront de l'Occident en hâte. ¹¹ Ils accourront en hâte hors d'Egypte, comme des oiseaux ; et hors du pays d'Assyrie, comme des pigeons, et je les ferai habiter dans leurs maisons, dit l'Eternel.

Osée 12

Vices des Israëlites.

   ¹ Ephraïm m'a abordé avec des mensonges, et la maison d'Israël avec des tromperies, lorsque Juda dominait encore avec le [Dieu] Fort, et [qu'il était] fidèle avec les Saints. ² Ephraïm se repaît de vent, et va après le vent d'Orient ; il multiplie tous les jours ses mensonges et le dégât, et ils traitent alliance avec l'Assyrie, et l'on porte des huiles de senteur en Egypte. ³ L'Eternel a aussi un procès avec Juda, et il visitera Jacob selon son train, il lui rendra selon ses oeuvres. ⁴ Dès le ventre il supplanta son frère, puis par sa force il fut vainqueur [en luttant] avec Dieu. ⁵ Il fut vainqueur [en luttant] avec l'Ange, et fut le plus fort ; il pleura, et lui demanda grâce ; il le trouva à Béthel, et là [Dieu] parla avec nous. ⁶ Or l'Eternel est le Dieu des armées ; son mémorial, c'est L'[Eternel].
   ⁷ Toi donc retourne-toi à ton Dieu ; garde la miséricorde et le jugement, et aie continuellement espérance en ton Dieu. ⁸ [Ephraïm] est un marchand ; il y a en sa main des balances trompeuses ; il aime à faire des extorsions. ⁹ Et Ephraïm a dit : Quoi qu'il en soit, je suis devenu riche ; je me suis acquis des richesses ; pas un de mes travaux ne feront trouver en moi une iniquité qui soit un péché. ¹⁰ Et moi je suis l'Eternel ton Dieu dès le pays d'Egypte ; je te ferai encore habiter dans des tentes, comme aux jours de fête solennelle. ¹¹ Je parlerai par les Prophètes, et multiplierai les visions, et je proposerai des similitudes par le moyen des Prophètes. ¹² Certainement Galaad n'est qu'iniquité, certainement ils ne sont que vanité ; ils ont sacrifié des boeufs en Guilgal ; même leurs autels sont comme des monceaux sur les sillons des champs. ¹³ Or Jacob s'enfuit au pays de Syrie, et Israël servit pour une femme, et pour une femme il garda le bétail. ¹⁴ Puis l'Eternel fit remonter Israël hors d'Egypte par le Prophète, et il fut gardé par le Prophète. ¹⁵ [Mais] Ephraïm a provoqué [Dieu] à une amère indignation, c'est pourquoi on répandra son sang sur lui, et son Seigneur lui rendra son opprobre.

Osée 13

Récit des bontés de Dieu pour l'ancien peuple. Prédiction de la ruine du Royaume d'Israël.

   ¹ Si-tôt qu'Ephraïm eut parlé, on trembla ; il avait élevé le [Royaume] en Israël, mais il s'est rendu coupable par Bahal, et il est mort. ² Et maintenant ils continuent à pécher, et ils se sont fait de leur argent une image de fonte, selon leur intelligence, des idoles qui ne sont qu'ouvrage d'ouvriers, [mais] desquelles [pourtant] ils disent aux hommes qui sacrifient : qu'on baise les veaux. ³ C'est pourquoi ils seront comme la nuée du matin, et comme la rosée du matin, laquelle s'en va ; comme la balle qui est emportée hors de l'aire par le tourbillon ; et comme la fumée sortant de la cheminée. ⁴ Et moi je suis l'Eternel ton Dieu dès le pays d Egypte, et tu ne devrais reconnaître d'autre dieu que moi ; aussi il n'y a point de Sauveur que moi.
   ⁵ Je t'ai connu au désert, en une terre aride. ⁶ Ils ont été rassasiés selon [l'abondance de] leurs pâturages, ils ont été rassasiés, et leur coeur s'est élevé ; et ils m'ont oublié. ⁷ Je leur ai donc été comme un grand lion ; et je les ai épiés sur le chemin comme un léopard. ⁸ Je les rencontrerai comme une ourse à qui on a ôté ses petits, et je déchirerai la taie de leur coeur, et là je les dévorerai comme un vieux lion ; la bête des champs les déchirera.
   ⁹ On t'a perdu, ô Israël ! mais en moi réside ton secours. ¹⁰ Serai-je ton Roi ? Où est-il [ton roi ?] et qu'il te délivre en toutes tes villes ; où sont tes Gouverneurs, desquels tu as dit : Donne-moi un Roi, et des Seigneurs ? ¹¹ Je t'ai donné un Roi en ma colère, et je l'ôterai en ma fureur. ¹² L'iniquité d'Ephraïm est liée, et son péché est serré. ¹³ Les douleurs [comme] de celle qui enfante le surprendront ; c'est un enfant qui n'est pas sage, car il ne se tient pas à temps à la brèche des enfants. ¹⁴ Je les eusse rachetés de la puissance du sépulcre, et les eusse garantis de la mort ; j'eusse été tes pestes, ô mort ! et ta destruction, ô sépulcre ! [mais] la repentance est cachée loin de mes yeux. ¹⁵ Quand il aura fructifié entre ses frères, le vent Oriental, le vent de l'Eternel montant du désert, viendra, et ses sources sécheront, et sa fontaine tarira, et on pillera le trésor de toutes les choses désirables. ¹⁶ Samarie sera désolée, car elle s'est rebellée contre son Dieu ; ils tomberont par l'épée, leurs petits enfants seront écrasés, et on fendra le ventre de leurs femmes enceintes.

Osée 14

Exhortation à Israël de se convertir ; Promesse de Dieu.

   ¹ Israël, retourne-toi jusqu'à l'Eternel ton Dieu ; car tu es tombé par ton iniquité. ² Prenez avec vous ce que vous avez à dire, et retournez-vous à l'Eternel, et lui dites : Ote toute l'iniquité, et prends le bien, [pour le mettre en sa place], et nous [te] rendrons les bouveaux de nos lèvres. ³ L'Assyrie ne nous délivrera pas ; nous ne monterons plus sur des chevaux, et nous ne dirons plus à l'ouvrage de nos mains : [Vous êtes] nos dieux ; car l'orphelin trouve compassion devant toi.
   ⁴ Je guérirai leur rébellion, et les aimerai volontairement ; parce que ma colère est détournée d'eux. ⁵ Je serai comme une rosée à Israël ; il fleurira comme le lis, et jettera ses racines comme [les arbres] du Liban. ⁶ Ses branches s'avanceront, et sa magnificence sera comme celle de l'olivier, et son odeur comme celle du Liban. ⁷ Ils retourneront pour se tenir assis sous son ombre, et ils foisonneront [comme] le froment, et fleuriront comme la vigne, et l'odeur de chacun d'eux sera comme celle du vin du Liban.
   ⁸ Ephraïm [dira]: Qu'ai-je plus à faire avec les faux dieux ? Je l'exaucerai, et le regarderai ; je lui serai comme le sapin vert, ton fruit procédera de moi. ⁹ Qui est celui qui est sage ? qu'il entende ces choses ; et qui est celui qui est prudent ? qu'il les connaisse ; car les voies de l'Eternel sont droites ; aussi les justes y marcheront, mais les rebelles y tomberont.
