KJV 1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

quia judicium Domino cum habitatoribus terræ :
non est enim veritas, et non est misericordia,
et non est scientia Dei in terra.

WLC 1 שִׁמְע֥וּ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֣י רִ֤יב לַֽיהוָה֙ עִם־ יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֠י אֵין־ אֱמֶ֧ת וְֽאֵין־ חֶ֛סֶד וְאֵֽין־ דַּ֥עַת אֱלֹהִ֖ים בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

KJV 2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

VULC 2 Maledictum, et mendacium,
et homicidium, et furtum, et adulterium inundaverunt,
et sanguis sanguinem tetigit.

WLC 2 אָלֹ֣ה וְכַחֵ֔שׁ וְרָצֹ֥חַ וְגָנֹ֖ב וְנָאֹ֑ף פָּרָ֕צוּ וְדָמִ֥ים בְּדָמִ֖ים נָגָֽעוּ׃

KJV 3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

VULC 3 Propter hoc lugebit terra,
et infirmabitur omnis qui habitat in ea,
in bestia agri, et in volucre cæli ;
sed et pisces maris congregabuntur.

WLC 3 עַל־ כֵּ֣ן ׀ תֶּאֱבַ֣ל הָאָ֗רֶץ וְאֻמְלַל֙ כָּל־ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּ֔הּ בְּחַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה וּבְע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְגַם־ דְּגֵ֥י הַיָּ֖ם יֵאָסֵֽפוּ׃

KJV 4 Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.

VULC 4 Verumtamen unusquisque non judicet,
et non arguatur vir :
populus enim tuus sicut hi qui contradicunt sacerdoti.

WLC 4 אַ֥ךְ אִ֛ישׁ אַל־ יָרֵ֖ב וְאַל־ יוֹכַ֣ח אִ֑ישׁ וְעַמְּךָ֖ כִּמְרִיבֵ֥י כֹהֵֽן׃

KJV 5 Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.

VULC 5 Et corrues hodie,
et corruet etiam propheta tecum.
Nocte tacere feci matrem tuam.

WLC 5 וְכָשַׁלְתָּ֣ הַיּ֔וֹם וְכָשַׁ֧ל גַּם־ נָבִ֛יא עִמְּךָ֖ לָ֑יְלָה וְדָמִ֖יתִי אִמֶּֽךָ׃

KJV 6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

VULC 6 Conticuit populus meus,
eo quod non habuerit scientiam :
quia tu scientiam repulisti,
repellam te, ne sacerdotio fungaris mihi ;
et oblita es legis Dei tui,
obliviscar filiorum tuorum et ego.

WLC 6 נִדְמ֥וּ עַמִּ֖י מִבְּלִ֣י הַדָּ֑עַת כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֞ה הַדַּ֣עַת מָאַ֗סְתָּ וְאֶמְאָֽסְאךָ֙ מִכַּהֵ֣ן לִ֔י וַתִּשְׁכַּח֙ תּוֹרַ֣ת אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֶשְׁכַּ֥ח בָּנֶ֖יךָ גַּם־ אָֽנִי׃

KJV 7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

VULC 7 Secundum multitudinem eorum sic peccaverunt mihi :
gloriam eorum in ignominiam commutabo.

WLC 7 כְּרֻבָּ֖ם כֵּ֣ן חָֽטְאוּ־ לִ֑י כְּבוֹדָ֖ם בְּקָל֥וֹן אָמִֽיר׃

KJV 8 They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.

VULC 8 Peccata populi mei comedent,
et ad iniquitatem eorum sublevabunt animas eorum.

WLC 8 חַטַּ֥את עַמִּ֖י יֹאכֵ֑לוּ וְאֶל־ עֲוֺנָ֖ם יִשְׂא֥וּ נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

KJV 9 And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.

VULC 9 Et erit sicut populus, sic sacerdos ;
et visitabo super eum vias ejus,
et cogitationes ejus reddam ei.

WLC 9 וְהָיָ֥ה כָעָ֖ם כַּכֹּהֵ֑ן וּפָקַדְתִּ֤י עָלָיו֙ דְּרָכָ֔יו וּמַעֲלָלָ֖יו אָשִׁ֥יב לֽוֹ׃

KJV 10 For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.

VULC 10 Et comedent, et non saturabuntur ;
fornicati sunt, et non cessaverunt :
quoniam Dominum dereliquerunt in non custodiendo.

WLC 10 וְאָֽכְלוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִשְׂבָּ֔עוּ הִזְנ֖וּ וְלֹ֣א יִפְרֹ֑צוּ כִּֽי־ אֶת־ יְהוָ֥ה עָזְב֖וּ לִשְׁמֹֽר׃

KJV 11 Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

VULC 11 Fornicatio, et vinum, et ebrietas auferunt cor.

WLC 11 זְנ֛וּת וְיַ֥יִן וְתִיר֖וֹשׁ יִֽקַּֽח־ לֵֽב׃

KJV 12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

VULC 12 Populus meus in ligno suo interrogavit,
et baculus ejus annuntiavit ei ;
spiritus enim fornicationum decepit eos,
et fornicati sunt a Deo suo.

WLC 12 עַמִּי֙ בְּעֵצ֣וֹ יִשְׁאָ֔ל וּמַקְל֖וֹ יַגִּ֣יד ל֑וֹ כִּ֣י ר֤וּחַ זְנוּנִים֙ הִתְעָ֔ה וַיִּזְנ֖וּ מִתַּ֥חַת אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

KJV 13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.

VULC 13 Super capita montium sacrificabant,
et super colles accendebant thymiama ;
subtus quercum, et populum, et terebinthum,
quia bona erat umbra ejus ;
ideo fornicabuntur filiæ vestræ,
et sponsæ vestræ adulteræ erunt.

WLC 13 עַל־ רָאשֵׁ֨י הֶהָרִ֜ים יְזַבֵּ֗חוּ וְעַל־ הַגְּבָעוֹת֙ יְקַטֵּ֔רוּ תַּ֣חַת אַלּ֧וֹן וְלִבְנֶ֛ה וְאֵלָ֖ה כִּ֣י ט֣וֹב צִלָּ֑הּ עַל־ כֵּ֗ן תִּזְנֶ֙ינָה֙ בְּנ֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם וְכַלּוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם תְּנָאַֽפְנָה׃

KJV 14 I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.

VULC 14 Non visitabo super filias vestras cum fuerint fornicatæ,
et super sponsas vestras cum adulteraverint,
quoniam ipsi cum meretricibus conversabantur,
et cum effeminatis sacrificabant ;
et populus non intelligens vapulabit.

WLC 14 לֹֽא־ אֶפְק֨וֹד עַל־ בְּנוֹתֵיכֶ֜ם כִּ֣י תִזְנֶ֗ינָה וְעַל־ כַּלּֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ כִּ֣י תְנָאַ֔פְנָה כִּי־ הֵם֙ עִם־ הַזֹּנ֣וֹת יְפָרֵ֔דוּ וְעִם־ הַקְּדֵשׁ֖וֹת יְזַבֵּ֑חוּ וְעָ֥ם לֹֽא־ יָבִ֖ין יִלָּבֵֽט׃

KJV 15 Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth.

VULC 15 Si fornicaris tu, Israël,
non delinquat saltem Juda ;
et nolite ingredi in Galgala,
et ne ascenderitis in Bethaven,
neque juraveritis : Vivit Dominus !

WLC 15 אִם־ זֹנֶ֤ה אַתָּה֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַל־ יֶאְשַׁ֖ם יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאַל־ תָּבֹ֣אוּ הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל וְאַֽל־ תַּעֲלוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית אָ֔וֶן וְאַל־ תִּשָּׁבְע֖וּ חַי־ יְהוָֽה׃

KJV 16 For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.

VULC 16 Quoniam sicut vacca lasciviens declinavit Israël ;
nunc pascet eos Dominus, quasi agnum in latitudine.

WLC 16 כִּ֚י כְּפָרָ֣ה סֹֽרֵרָ֔ה סָרַ֖ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עַתָּה֙ יִרְעֵ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה כְּכֶ֖בֶשׂ בַּמֶּרְחָֽב׃

KJV 17 Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.

VULC 17 Particeps idolorum Ephraim : dimitte eum.

WLC 17 חֲב֧וּר עֲצַבִּ֛ים אֶפְרָ֖יִם הַֽנַּֽח־ לֽוֹ׃

KJV 18 Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.

VULC 18 Separatum est convivium eorum ;
fornicatione fornicati sunt :
dilexerunt afferre ignominiam protectores ejus.

WLC 18 סָ֖ר סָבְאָ֑ם הַזְנֵ֣ה הִזְנ֔וּ אָהֲב֥וּ הֵב֛וּ קָל֖וֹן מָגִנֶּֽיהָ׃

KJV 19 The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

VULC 19 Ligavit eum spiritus in alis suis,
et confundentur a sacrificiis suis.]

WLC 19 צָרַ֥ר ר֛וּחַ אוֹתָ֖הּ בִּכְנָפֶ֑יהָ וְיֵבֹ֖שׁוּ מִזִּבְחוֹתָֽם

KJV 1 Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.

et attendite, domus Israël,
et domus regis, auscultate :
quia vobis judicium est,
quoniam laqueus facti estis speculationi,
et rete expansum super Thabor.

WLC 1 שִׁמְעוּ־ זֹ֨את הַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים וְהַקְשִׁ֣יבוּ ׀ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וּבֵ֤ית הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַאֲזִ֔ינוּ כִּ֥י לָכֶ֖ם הַמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט כִּֽי־ פַח֙ הֱיִיתֶ֣ם לְמִצְפָּ֔ה וְרֶ֖שֶׁת פְּרוּשָׂ֥ה עַל־ תָּבֽוֹר׃

KJV 2 And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all.

VULC 2 Et victimas declinastis in profundum ;
et ego eruditor omnium eorum.

WLC 2 וְשַׁחֲטָ֥ה שֵׂטִ֖ים הֶעְמִ֑יקוּ וַאֲנִ֖י מוּסָ֥ר לְכֻלָּֽם׃

KJV 3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled.

VULC 3 Ego scio Ephraim,
et Israël non est absconditus a me :
quia nunc fornicatus est Ephraim ;
contaminatus est Israël.

WLC 3 אֲנִי֙ יָדַ֣עְתִּי אֶפְרַ֔יִם וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹֽא־ נִכְחַ֣ד מִמֶּ֑נִּי כִּ֤י עַתָּה֙ הִזְנֵ֣יתָ אֶפְרַ֔יִם נִטְמָ֖א יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJV 4 They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.

VULC 4 Non dabunt cogitationes suas ut revertantur ad Deum suum,
quia spiritus fornicationum in medio eorum,
et Dominum non cognoverunt.

WLC 4 לֹ֤א יִתְּנוּ֙ מַ֣עַלְלֵיהֶ֔ם לָשׁ֖וּב אֶל־ אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם כִּ֣י ר֤וּחַ זְנוּנִים֙ בְּקִרְבָּ֔ם וְאֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א יָדָֽעוּ׃

KJV 5 And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity: Judah also shall fall with them.

VULC 5 Et respondebit arrogantia Israël in facie ejus,
et Israël et Ephraim ruent in iniquitate sua :
ruet etiam Judas cum eis.

WLC 5 וְעָנָ֥ה גְאֽוֹן־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּפָנָ֑יו וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל וְאֶפְרַ֗יִם יִכָּֽשְׁלוּ֙ בַּעֲוֺנָ֔ם כָּשַׁ֥ל גַּם־ יְהוּדָ֖ה עִמָּֽם׃

KJV 6 They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.

VULC 6 In gregibus suis et in armentis suis vadent ad quærendum Dominum,
et non invenient :
ablatus est ab eis.

WLC 6 בְּצֹאנָ֣ם וּבִבְקָרָ֗ם יֵֽלְכ֛וּ לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ אֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֣א יִמְצָ֑אוּ חָלַ֖ץ מֵהֶֽם׃

KJV 7 They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.

VULC 7 In Dominum prævaricati sunt,
quia filios alienos genuerunt :
nunc devorabit eos mensis, cum partibus suis.

WLC 7 בַּיהוָ֣ה בָּגָ֔דוּ כִּֽי־ בָנִ֥ים זָרִ֖ים יָלָ֑דוּ עַתָּ֛ה יֹאכְלֵ֥ם חֹ֖דֶשׁ אֶת־ חֶלְקֵיהֶֽם׃

KJV 8 Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin.

VULC 8 Clangite buccina in Gabaa,
tuba in Rama ;
ululate in Bethaven,
post tergum tuum, Benjamin.

WLC 8 תִּקְע֤וּ שׁוֹפָר֙ בַּגִּבְעָ֔ה חֲצֹצְרָ֖ה בָּרָמָ֑ה הָרִ֙יעוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית אָ֔וֶן אַחֲרֶ֖יךָ בִּנְיָמִֽין׃

KJV 9 Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.

VULC 9 Ephraim in desolatione erit in die correptionis ;
in tribubus Israël ostendi fidem.

WLC 9 אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ לְשַׁמָּ֣ה תִֽהְיֶ֔ה בְּי֖וֹם תּֽוֹכֵחָ֑ה בְּשִׁבְטֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הוֹדַ֖עְתִּי נֶאֱמָנָֽה׃

KJV 10 The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.

VULC 10 Facti sunt principes Juda quasi assumentes terminum ;
super eos effundam quasi aquam iram meam.

WLC 10 הָיוּ֙ שָׂרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה כְּמַסִּיגֵ֖י גְּב֑וּל עֲלֵיהֶ֕ם אֶשְׁפּ֥וֹךְ כַּמַּ֖יִם עֶבְרָתִֽי׃

KJV 11 Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.

VULC 11 Calumniam patiens est Ephraim, fractus judicio,
quoniam cœpit abire post sordes.

WLC 11 עָשׁ֥וּק אֶפְרַ֖יִם רְצ֣וּץ מִשְׁפָּ֑ט כִּ֣י הוֹאִ֔יל הָלַ֖ךְ אַחֲרֵי־ צָֽו׃

KJV 12 Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness.

VULC 12 Et ego quasi tinea Ephraim,
et quasi putredo domui Juda.

WLC 12 וַאֲנִ֥י כָעָ֖שׁ לְאֶפְרָ֑יִם וְכָרָקָ֖ב לְבֵ֥ית יְהוּדָֽה׃

KJV 13 When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

VULC 13 Et vidit Ephraim languorem suum,
et Juda vinculum suum ;
et abiit Ephraim ad Assur,
et misit ad regem ultorem :
et ipse non poterit sanare vos,
nec solvere poterit a vobis vinculum.

WLC 13 וַיַּ֨רְא אֶפְרַ֜יִם אֶת־ חָלְי֗וֹ וִֽיהוּדָה֙ אֶת־ מְזֹר֔וֹ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ אֶל־ אַשּׁ֔וּר וַיִּשְׁלַ֖ח אֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ יָרֵ֑ב וְה֗וּא לֹ֤א יוּכַל֙ לִרְפֹּ֣א לָכֶ֔ם וְלֹֽא־ יִגְהֶ֥ה מִכֶּ֖ם מָזֽוֹר׃

KJV 14 For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.

VULC 14 Quoniam ego quasi leæna Ephraim,
et quasi catulus leonis domui Juda.
Ego, ego capiam, et vadam ;
tollam, et non est qui eruat.

WLC 14 כִּ֣י אָנֹכִ֤י כַשַּׁ֙חַל֙ לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם וְכַכְּפִ֖יר לְבֵ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה אֲנִ֨י אֲנִ֤י אֶטְרֹף֙ וְאֵלֵ֔ךְ אֶשָּׂ֖א וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּֽיל׃

KJV 15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

donec deficiatis, et quæratis faciem meam.]

WLC 15 אֵלֵ֤ךְ אָשׁ֙וּבָה֙ אֶל־ מְקוֹמִ֔י עַ֥ד אֲשֶֽׁר־ יֶאְשְׁמ֖וּ וּבִקְשׁ֣וּ פָנָ֑י בַּצַּ֥ר לָהֶ֖ם יְשַׁחֲרֻֽנְנִי׃

KJV 1 Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

VULC 1 [In tribulatione sua mane consurgent ad me :
Venite, et revertamur ad Dominum,

WLC 1 לְכוּ֙ וְנָשׁ֣וּבָה אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֛י ה֥וּא טָרָ֖ף וְיִרְפָּאֵ֑נוּ יַ֖ךְ וְיַחְבְּשֵֽׁנוּ׃

KJV 2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

VULC 2 quia ipse cepit, et sanabit nos ;
percutiet, et curabit nos.

WLC 2 יְחַיֵּ֖נוּ מִיֹּמָ֑יִם בַּיּוֹם֙ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י יְקִמֵ֖נוּ וְנִחְיֶ֥ה לְפָנָֽיו׃

KJV 3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

VULC 3 Vivificabit nos post duos dies ;
in die tertia suscitabit nos,
et vivemus in conspectu ejus.
Sciemus, sequemurque ut cognoscamus Dominum :
quasi diluculum præparatus est egressus ejus,
et veniet quasi imber nobis temporaneus et serotinus terræ.

WLC 3 וְנֵדְעָ֣ה נִרְדְּפָ֗ה לָדַ֙עַת֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה כְּשַׁ֖חַר נָכ֣וֹן מֽוֹצָא֑וֹ וְיָב֤וֹא כַגֶּ֙שֶׁם֙ לָ֔נוּ כְּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ י֥וֹרֶה אָֽרֶץ׃

KJV 4 O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.

VULC 4 Quid faciam tibi, Ephraim ?
quid faciam tibi, Juda ?
misericordia vestra quasi nubes matutina,
et quasi ros mane pertransiens.

WLC 4 מָ֤ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ לְּךָ֙ אֶפְרַ֔יִם מָ֥ה אֶעֱשֶׂה־ לְּךָ֖ יְהוּדָ֑ה וְחַסְדְּכֶם֙ כַּֽעֲנַן־ בֹּ֔קֶר וְכַטַּ֖ל מַשְׁכִּ֥ים הֹלֵֽךְ׃

KJV 5 Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.

VULC 5 Propter hoc dolavi in prophetis ;
occidi eos in verbis oris mei :
et judicia tua quasi lux egredientur.

WLC 5 עַל־ כֵּ֗ן חָצַ֙בְתִּי֙ בַּנְּבִיאִ֔ים הֲרַגְתִּ֖ים בְּאִמְרֵי־ פִ֑י וּמִשְׁפָּטֶ֖יךָ א֥וֹר יֵצֵֽא׃

KJV 6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

VULC 6 Quia misericordiam volui, et non sacrificium ;
et scientiam Dei plus quam holocausta.

WLC 6 כִּ֛י חֶ֥סֶד חָפַ֖צְתִּי וְלֹא־ זָ֑בַח וְדַ֥עַת אֱלֹהִ֖ים מֵעֹלֽוֹת׃

KJV 7 But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.
