¹ Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
² By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
³ Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
⁴ Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.
⁵ Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
⁶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
⁷ As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.
⁸ They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
⁹ And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.
¹⁰ For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.
¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
¹² My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.
¹³ They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.
¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.
¹⁵ Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth.
¹⁶ For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
¹⁷ Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.
¹⁸ Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.
¹⁹ The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Osée 5

¹ Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.
² And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all.
³ I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled.
⁴ They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.
⁵ And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity: Judah also shall fall with them.
⁶ They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.
⁷ They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.
⁸ Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin.
⁹ Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.
¹⁰ The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.
¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.
¹² Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness.
¹³ When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.
¹⁴ For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.
¹⁵ I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

¹ Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
² After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
³ Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.
⁵ Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.
⁶ For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
⁷ But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.
⁸ Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.
⁹ And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness.
¹⁰ I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel: there is the whoredom of Ephraim, Israel is defiled.
¹¹ Also, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people.

Péché et jugement d'Israël (4.1–10.15)

Reproches contre l'idolâtrie

¹ Ecoutez la parole de l'Eternel, Israélites, car l'Eternel a un procès avec les habitants du pays: il n'y a pas de vérité, pas de bonté, pas de connaissance de Dieu dans le pays.
² Il n'y a que parjures et mensonges, assassinats, vols et adultères. On recourt à la violence, on commet meurtre sur meurtre.
³ C'est pourquoi le pays sera dans le deuil; tous ceux qui l'habitent seront abattus, de même que les bêtes sauvages et les oiseaux du ciel; même les poissons de la mer disparaîtront.
⁴ Mais que personne ne conteste, que personne ne se livre aux reproches! En effet, ton peuple est pareil à ceux qui se querellent avec les prêtres.
⁵ Tu trébucheras de jour, le prophète avec toi trébuchera de nuit et je détruirai ta mère.
⁶ Mon peuple est détruit parce qu'il lui manque la connaissance. Puisque tu as rejeté la connaissance, je te rejetterai: tu ne pourras plus exercer la fonction de prêtre pour moi. De même que tu as oublié la loi de ton Dieu, j'oublierai aussi tes enfants.
⁷ Plus ils se sont multipliés, plus ils ont péché contre moi. Je changerai leur gloire en honte.
⁸ Ils se nourrissent des péchés de mon peuple, ils sont avides de ses fautes.
⁹ Le sort du prêtre sera identique à celui du peuple: j'interviendrai contre lui à cause de sa conduite, je lui paierai le salaire de ses agissements.
¹⁰ Ils mangeront sans se rassasier, ils se prostitueront sans se multiplier, parce qu'ils ont cessé de respecter l'Eternel.
¹¹ La prostitution, le vieux vin et le vin nouveau font perdre la raison.
¹² Mon peuple consulte son bois, et c'est son bâton qui lui parle! En effet, l'esprit de prostitution égare, et ils se prostituent loin de leur Dieu.
¹³ Ils offrent des sacrifices sur le sommet des montagnes, ils font brûler de l'encens sur les collines, sous les chênes, les peupliers, les térébinthes dont l'ombrage est agréable. C'est pourquoi vos filles se prostituent et vos belles-filles sont adultères.
¹⁴ Je ne punirai pas vos filles parce qu'elles se prostituent, ni vos belles-filles parce qu'elles sont adultères. En effet, eux-mêmes vont à l'écart avec des prostituées et sacrifient avec des femmes débauchées. Le peuple sans intelligence court à sa perte.
¹⁵ Si tu te livres à la prostitution, Israël, que Juda ne se rende pas coupable! N'allez pas à Guilgal, ne montez pas à Beth-Aven et ne jurez pas: «L'Eternel est vivant!»
¹⁶ Israël se révolte comme une génisse indomptable, et maintenant l'Eternel le ferait brouter comme un agneau dans de vastes plaines?
¹⁷ Ephraïm est attaché aux idoles? Laisse-le!
¹⁸ Ils ont à peine cessé de boire qu'ils se livrent à la prostitution. Leurs chefs sont avides de ce qui fait leur honte.
¹⁹ Le vent les enveloppera de ses ailes, et ils auront honte de leurs sacrifices.

Osée 5

¹ Ecoutez ceci, prêtres! Sois attentive, communauté d'Israël! Prête l'oreille, famille du roi! En effet, c'est à vous que le jugement s'adresse parce que vous avez été un piège à Mitspa, et un filet tendu sur le Thabor.
² Par leurs sacrifices, les infidèles s'enfoncent dans le crime, mais j'aurai une correction pour eux tous.
³ Je connais Ephraïm, et Israël ne m'est pas caché. En effet, maintenant, Ephraïm, tu t'es prostitué et Israël s'est rendu impur.
⁴ Leurs agissements ne leur permettent pas de revenir à leur Dieu, parce que l'esprit de prostitution est au milieu d'eux et parce qu'ils ne connaissent pas l'Eternel.
⁵ L'orgueil d'Israël témoigne contre lui: Israël et Ephraïm trébucheront par leur faute; Juda aussi trébuchera avec eux.
⁶ Ils iront avec leurs brebis et leurs bœufs rechercher l'Eternel, mais ils ne le trouveront pas: il s'est éloigné d'eux.
⁷ Ils ont été infidèles à l'Eternel, car ils ont donné naissance à des enfants illégitimes; maintenant, un mois suffira pour les détruire avec leurs biens.

Punition d'Israël et Juda

⁸ Sonnez de la trompette à Guibea, sonnez de la trompette à Rama, poussez des cris à Beth-Aven! Derrière toi, Benjamin!
⁹ Ephraïm sera dévasté, le jour de la punition. J'annonce aux tribus d'Israël une chose certaine.
¹⁰ Les chefs de Juda sont pareils à ceux qui déplacent les bornes; je déverserai ma colère sur eux comme un torrent.
¹¹ Ephraïm est opprimé, brisé par le jugement, car il a suivi les ordres qui lui plaisaient.
¹² Je serai comme une teigne pour Ephraïm, comme une carie pour la communauté de Juda.
¹³ Ephraïm voit son mal, et Juda ses plaies; Ephraïm se rend en Assyrie et s'adresse au roi Jareb, mais ce roi ne pourra pas vous guérir ni porter remède à vos plaies.
¹⁴ Je serai comme un lion pour Ephraïm, comme un lionceau pour la communauté de Juda. Moi, moi, je déchirerai, puis je m'en irai, j'emporterai ma proie sans personne pour la délivrer.
¹⁵ Je m'en irai, je reviendrai à ma place, jusqu'à ce qu'ils s'avouent coupables et recherchent ma présence. Quand ils seront dans la détresse, ils auront recours à moi:

Osée 6

¹ «Venez, retournons à l'Eternel! En effet, il a déchiré, mais il nous guérira, il a frappé, mais il bandera nos plaies.
² Il nous rendra la vie dans deux jours, le troisième jour il nous relèvera et nous vivrons devant lui.
³ Connaissons, cherchons à connaître l'Eternel! Sa venue est aussi certaine que celle de l'aurore. Il viendra pour nous comme la pluie, comme la dernière pluie qui arrose la terre.»
⁴ Que puis-je te faire, Ephraïm? Que puis-je te faire, Juda? Votre attachement est pareil à la nuée du matin, à la rosée qui se dissipe très vite.
⁵ C'est pourquoi je les frapperai par les prophètes, je les tuerai par les paroles de ma bouche, et mes jugements éclateront comme la lumière.
⁶ En effet, *je prends plaisir à la bonté et non aux sacrifices, à la connaissance de Dieu plus qu'aux holocaustes.
⁷ Comme Adam ils ont violé l'alliance; c'est alors qu'ils m'ont été infidèles.
⁸ Galaad est une ville de fauteurs de troubles, elle porte des traces de sang.
⁹ La troupe des prêtres est comme une bande en embuscade, ils commettent des assassinats sur le chemin de Sichem. Oui, ils se livrent au crime.
¹⁰ Dans la communauté d'Israël j'ai vu des choses horribles: là Ephraïm se prostitue, Israël se rend impur.
¹¹ Pour toi aussi, Juda, une moisson est préparée, quand je ramènerai les déportés de mon peuple.
