KJV ¹ Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.

S21 ¹ Samuel dit à Saül: «C'est moi que l'Eternel a envoyé pour te consacrer par onction comme roi sur son peuple, sur Israël. Ecoute donc les paroles prononcées par l'Eternel!

WLC ¹ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל־ שָׁא֔וּל אֹתִ֨י שָׁלַ֤ח יְהוָה֙ לִמְשָׁחֳךָ֣ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ עַל־ עַמּ֖וֹ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעַתָּ֣ה שְׁמַ֔ע לְק֖וֹל דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ² Ainsi dit l'Éternel des armées : J'ai considéré ce qu'Amalek a fait à Israël, comment il se plaça contre lui sur le chemin quand il montait d'Égypte.

KJV ² Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

S21 ² Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers: ‘Je me souviens de ce que les Amalécites ont fait à Israël lorsqu'ils lui ont barré le chemin à sa sortie d'Egypte.

WLC ² כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת פָּקַ֕דְתִּי אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֥ה עֲמָלֵ֖ק לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר־ שָׂ֥ם לוֹ֙ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ בַּעֲלֹת֖וֹ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

DRB ³ Va maintenant, et frappe Amalek, et vous détruirez entièrement tout ce qui est à lui, et tu ne l'épargneras pas, mais tu feras mourir les hommes et les femmes, les enfants et ceux qui tètent, les bœufs et les moutons, les chameaux et les ânes.

KJV ³ Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

S21 ³ Va maintenant frapper les Amalécites. Vouez à la destruction tout ce qui leur appartient. Tu ne les épargneras pas et tu feras mourir hommes et femmes, enfants et bébés, bœufs et brebis, chameaux et ânes.'»

DRB ⁴ Et Saül convoqua le peuple et le dénombra à Telaïm, deux cent mille hommes de pied et dix mille hommes de Juda.

KJV ⁴ And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

S21 ⁴ Saül convoqua le peuple et le passa en revue à Thelaïm: il y avait 200'000 fantassins ainsi que 10'000 hommes de Juda.

DRB ⁵ Et Saül vint jusqu'à la ville d'Amalek, et il plaça une embuscade dans la vallée.

KJV ⁵ And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

S21 ⁵ Saül marcha jusqu'à la ville d'Amalek et plaça une embuscade dans la vallée.

WLC ⁵ וַיָּבֹ֥א שָׁא֖וּל עַד־ עִ֣יר עֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיָּ֖רֶב בַּנָּֽחַל׃

DRB ⁶ Et Saül dit aux Kéniens : Allez, retirez-vous, descendez du milieu des Amalékites, de peur que je ne te détruise avec eux ; car toi, tu usas de bonté envers tous les fils d'Israël lorsqu'ils montèrent d'Égypte. Et le Kénien se retira du milieu d'Amalek.

KJV ⁶ And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

S21 ⁶ Il dit aux Kéniens: «Partez, retirez-vous, quittez les Amalécites afin que je ne vous fasse pas subir le même sort qu'à eux. En effet, vous avez fait preuve de bonté envers tous les Israélites lorsqu'ils sont montés d'Egypte.» Les Kéniens se retirèrent alors du milieu des Amalécites.

KJV ⁷ And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.

DRB ⁸ Et il prit vivant Agag, roi d'Amalek, et détruisit entièrement tout le peuple par le tranchant de l'épée.

KJV ⁸ And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

S21 ⁸ Il captura Agag, roi d'Amalek, vivant et il voua à la destruction tout le peuple en le passant au fil de l'épée.

WLC ⁸ וַיִּתְפֹּ֛שׂ אֶת־ אֲגַ֥ג מֶֽלֶךְ־ עֲמָלֵ֖ק חָ֑י וְאֶת־ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם הֶחֱרִ֥ים לְפִי־ חָֽרֶב׃

DRB ⁹ Et Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, et le meilleur du menu et du gros bétail, et les bêtes de la seconde portée, et les agneaux*, et tout ce qui était bon, et ils ne voulurent pas les détruire entièrement ; mais tout ce qui était misérable et chétif, cela ils le détruisirent entièrement.

KJV ⁹ But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

S21 ⁹ Mais Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag ainsi que les meilleures brebis, les meilleurs bœufs, les meilleures bêtes de la seconde portée, les agneaux gras et tout ce qu'il y avait de bon; ils ne voulurent pas le vouer à la destruction. En revanche, ils exterminèrent tout ce qui était sans valeur et chétif.

WLC ⁹ וַיַּחְמֹל֩ שָׁא֨וּל וְהָעָ֜ם עַל־ אֲגָ֗ג וְעַל־ מֵיטַ֣ב הַצֹּאן֩ וְהַבָּקָ֨ר וְהַמִּשְׁנִ֤ים וְעַל־ הַכָּרִים֙ וְעַל־ כָּל־ הַטּ֔וֹב וְלֹ֥א אָב֖וּ הַחֲרִימָ֑ם וְכָל־ הַמְּלָאכָ֛ה נְמִבְזָ֥ה וְנָמֵ֖ס אֹתָ֥הּ הֶחֱרִֽימוּ׃

WLC ¹⁰ וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹֽר׃

DRB ¹¹ Je me repens d'avoir établi Saül pour roi ; car il s'est détourné de* moi et n'a point exécuté mes paroles. Et Samuel fut fort attristé, et il cria à l'Éternel toute la nuit.

KJV ¹¹ It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

S21 ¹¹ «Je regrette d'avoir établi Saül pour roi, car il se détourne de moi et n'accomplit pas mes paroles.» Samuel fut irrité et il cria à l'Eternel toute la nuit.

WLC ¹¹ נִחַ֗מְתִּי כִּֽי־ הִמְלַ֤כְתִּי אֶת־ שָׁאוּל֙ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ כִּֽי־ שָׁב֙ מֵאַֽחֲרַ֔י וְאֶת־ דְּבָרַ֖י לֹ֣א הֵקִ֑ים וַיִּ֙חַר֙ לִשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיִּזְעַ֥ק אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה כָּל־ הַלָּֽיְלָה׃

DRB ¹² Et Samuel se leva de bonne heure pour aller le matin à la rencontre de Saül. Et on rapporta à Samuel, disant : Saül est allé à Carmel* ; et voici, il s'est érigé un trophée, et il s'est tourné ailleurs, et a passé plus loin, et est descendu à Guilgal.

KJV ¹² And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

S21 ¹² Il se leva de bon matin pour aller à la rencontre de Saül. On vint lui dire: «Saül s'est rendu à Carmel et il s'y est érigé un monument. Puis il est reparti et, passant plus loin, il est descendu à Guilgal.»

WLC ¹² וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֧ם שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל לִקְרַ֥את שָׁא֖וּל בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִשְׁמוּאֵ֜ל לֵאמֹ֗ר בָּֽא־ שָׁא֤וּל הַכַּרְמֶ֙לָה֙ וְהִנֵּ֨ה מַצִּ֥יב לוֹ֙ יָ֔ד וַיִּסֹּב֙ וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֔ר וַיֵּ֖רֶד הַגִּלְגָּֽל׃

DRB ¹³ Et Samuel vint vers Saül, et Saül lui dit : Béni sois-tu de l'Éternel ! j'ai exécuté la parole de l'Éternel.

KJV ¹³ And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.

S21 ¹³ Samuel se rendit vers Saül, et Saül lui dit: «Sois béni de l'Eternel! J'ai accompli la parole de l'Eternel.»

WLC ¹³ וַיָּבֹ֥א שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל אֶל־ שָׁא֑וּל וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ שָׁא֗וּל בָּר֤וּךְ אַתָּה֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה הֲקִימֹ֖תִי אֶת־ דְּבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁴ Et Samuel dit : Quel est donc ce bêlement de brebis à mes oreilles, et ce beuglement de bœufs que j'entends ?

KJV ¹⁴ And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

S21 ¹⁴ Samuel dit: «Qu'est-ce donc que ce bêlement de brebis qui parvient à mes oreilles et ce mugissement de bœufs que j'entends?»

WLC ¹⁴ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וּמֶ֛ה קֽוֹל־ הַצֹּ֥אן הַזֶּ֖ה בְּאָזְנָ֑י וְק֣וֹל הַבָּקָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י שֹׁמֵֽעַ׃

DRB ¹⁵ Et Saül dit : Ils les ont amenés des Amalékites, car le peuple a épargné le meilleur du menu et du gros bétail, pour sacrifier à l'Éternel, ton Dieu ; et le reste, nous l'avons détruit entièrement.

KJV ¹⁵ And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

S21 ¹⁵ Saül répondit: «Ils les ont amenés de chez les Amalécites, parce que le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs bœufs afin de les offrir en sacrifice à l'Eternel, ton Dieu. Le reste, nous l'avons voué à la destruction.»

WLC ¹⁵ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל מֵעֲמָלֵקִ֣י הֱבִיא֗וּם אֲשֶׁ֨ר חָמַ֤ל הָעָם֙ עַל־ מֵיטַ֤ב הַצֹּאן֙ וְהַבָּקָ֔ר לְמַ֥עַן זְבֹ֖חַ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְאֶת־ הַיּוֹתֵ֖ר הֶחֱרַֽמְנוּ׃

DRB ¹⁶ Et Samuel dit à Saül : Arrête, et je te déclarerai ce que l'Éternel m'a dit cette nuit. Et il lui dit : Parle.

KJV ¹⁶ Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

S21 ¹⁶ Samuel dit à Saül: «Arrête! Je vais te révéler ce que l'Eternel m'a dit cette nuit.» Saül lui dit: «Parle!»

WLC ¹⁶ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל־ שָׁא֔וּל הֶ֚רֶף וְאַגִּ֣ידָה לְּךָ֔ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֵלַ֖י הַלָּ֑יְלָה ל֖וֹ דַּבֵּֽר׃

DRB ¹⁷ Et Samuel dit : N'est-ce pas, quand tu étais petit à tes propres yeux, tu es devenu chef des tribus d'Israël, et l'Éternel t'a oint pour roi sur Israël ?

KJV ¹⁷ And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

S21 ¹⁷ Samuel dit: «Alors que tu étais petit à tes propres yeux, n'es-tu pas devenu le chef des tribus d'Israël et l'Eternel ne t'a-t-il pas désigné par onction pour que tu sois roi sur Israël?

WLC ¹⁷ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל הֲל֗וֹא אִם־ קָטֹ֤ן אַתָּה֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ רֹ֛אשׁ שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אָ֑תָּה וַיִּמְשָׁחֲךָ֧ יְהוָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

DRB ¹⁸ Et l'Éternel t'avait envoyé par un chemin, et t'avait dit : Va et détruis entièrement ces pécheurs, les Amalékites, et fais-leur la guerre jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient consumés.

KJV ¹⁸ And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

S21 ¹⁸ L'Eternel t'avait envoyé en disant: ‘Va vouer à la destruction ces pécheurs que sont les Amalécites. Tu leur feras la guerre jusqu'à ce que tu les aies exterminés.'

WLC ¹⁸ וַיִּשְׁלָחֲךָ֥ יְהוָ֖ה בְּדָ֑רֶךְ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֵ֣ךְ וְהַחֲרַמְתָּ֞ה אֶת־ הַֽחַטָּאִים֙ אֶת־ עֲמָלֵ֔ק וְנִלְחַמְתָּ֣ ב֔וֹ עַ֥ד כַּלּוֹתָ֖ם אֹתָֽם׃

DRB ¹⁹ Et pourquoi n'as-tu pas écouté la voix de l'Éternel, et t'es-tu jeté sur le butin, et as-tu fait ce qui est mauvais aux yeux de l'Éternel ?

KJV ¹⁹ Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?

S21 ¹⁹ Pourquoi n'as-tu pas écouté l'Eternel? Pourquoi t'es-tu jeté sur le butin et as-tu fait ce qu'il désapprouve?»

WLC ¹⁹ וְלָ֥מָּה לֹא־ שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה וַתַּ֙עַט֙ אֶל־ הַשָּׁלָ֔ל וַתַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ²⁰ Et Saül dit à Samuel : J'ai écouté la voix de l'Éternel, et je suis allé par le chemin par lequel l'Éternel m'a envoyé ; et j'ai amené Agag, roi d'Amalek, et j'ai entièrement détruit Amalek.

KJV ²⁰ And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

S21 ²⁰ Saül répondit à Samuel: «J'ai écouté l'Eternel et j'ai suivi la voie où il m'envoyait. J'ai ramené Agag, le roi d'Amalek, et j'ai voué les Amalécites à la destruction.

WLC ²⁰ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֤ר שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֔ה וָאֵלֵ֕ךְ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־ שְׁלָחַ֣נִי יְהוָ֑ה וָאָבִ֗יא אֶת־ אֲגַג֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ עֲמָלֵ֔ק וְאֶת־ עֲמָלֵ֖ק הֶחֱרַֽמְתִּי׃

DRB ²¹ Et le peuple a pris, dans le butin, du menu et du gros bétail, comme prémices de ce qui était voué à l'exécration, pour sacrifier à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, à Guilgal.

KJV ²¹ But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.

S21 ²¹ Mais le peuple a pris sur le butin les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs bœufs qui devaient être consacrés, afin de les offrir en sacrifice à l'Eternel, ton Dieu, à Guilgal.»

WLC ²¹ וַיִּקַּ֨ח הָעָ֧ם מֵהַשָּׁלָ֛ל צֹ֥אן וּבָקָ֖ר רֵאשִׁ֣ית הַחֵ֑רֶם לִזְבֹּ֛חַ לַֽיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בַּגִּלְגָּֽל׃

DRB ²² Et Samuel dit : L'Éternel prend-il plaisir aux holocaustes et aux sacrifices, comme à ce qu'on écoute la voix de l'Éternel ? Voici, écouter* est meilleur que sacrifice, prêter l'oreille, meilleur que la graisse des béliers ;

KJV ²² And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

S21 ²² Samuel dit:
«L'Eternel trouve-t-il autant de plaisir dans les holocaustes et les sacrifices
que dans l'obéissance à sa voix?
Non, l'obéissance vaut mieux que les sacrifices
et l'écoute attentive vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers.

WLC ²² וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל הַחֵ֤פֶץ לַֽיהוָה֙ בְּעֹל֣וֹת וּזְבָחִ֔ים כִּשְׁמֹ֖עַ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה הִנֵּ֤ה שְׁמֹ֙עַ֙ מִזֶּ֣בַח ט֔וֹב לְהַקְשִׁ֖יב מֵחֵ֥לֶב אֵילִֽים׃

DRB ²³ car la rébellion est comme le péché de divination, et l'obstination comme une idolâtrie et des théraphim. Parce que tu as rejeté la parole de l'Éternel, il t'a aussi rejeté comme roi.

KJV ²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

S21 ²³ Oui, la révolte est aussi coupable que la divination,
et la résistance au Seigneur est aussi fautive que le recours aux théraphim.
Puisque tu as rejeté la parole de l'Eternel,
il te rejette lui aussi comme roi.»

WLC ²³ כִּ֤י חַטַּאת־ קֶ֙סֶם֙ מֶ֔רִי וְאָ֥וֶן וּתְרָפִ֖ים הַפְצַ֑ר יַ֗עַן מָאַ֙סְתָּ֙ אֶת־ דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּמְאָסְךָ֖ מִמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

DRB ²⁴ Et Saül dit à Samuel : J'ai péché, car j'ai transgressé le commandement* de l'Éternel et tes paroles, car j'ai craint le peuple et j'ai écouté leur voix.

KJV ²⁴ And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

S21 ²⁴ Alors Saül dit à Samuel: «J'ai péché, car j'ai enfreint l'ordre de l'Eternel et tes paroles. J'ai eu peur du peuple et je l'ai écouté.

WLC ²⁴ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֤וּל אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ חָטָ֔אתִי כִּֽי־ עָבַ֥רְתִּי אֶת־ פִּֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה וְאֶת־ דְּבָרֶ֑יךָ כִּ֤י יָרֵ֙אתִי֙ אֶת־ הָעָ֔ם וָאֶשְׁמַ֖ע בְּקוֹלָֽם׃

DRB ²⁶ Et Samuel dit à Saül : Je ne retournerai point avec toi ; car tu as rejeté la parole de l'Éternel, et l'Éternel t'a rejeté pour que tu ne sois plus roi sur Israël.

KJV ²⁶ And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

DRB ²⁷ Et Samuel se tourna pour s'en aller, et [Saül] saisit le pan de sa robe, qui se déchira.

KJV ²⁷ And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

KJV ²⁸ And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.

DRB ²⁹ Et aussi, la sûre Confiance d'Israël ne ment point et ne se repent point ; car il n'est pas un homme pour se repentir.

KJV ²⁹ And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

S21 ²⁹ Celui qui est la force d'Israël ne ment pas et n'éprouve pas de regrets, car il n'est pas un homme pour avoir des regrets.»

DRB ³⁰ Et [Saül] dit : J'ai péché ; honore-moi maintenant, je te prie, en la présence des anciens de mon peuple et en la présence d'Israël, et retourne-t'en avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l'Éternel, ton Dieu.

KJV ³² Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

KJV ³³ And Samuel said, As the sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

DRB ³⁵ Et Samuel ne vit plus Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort, car Samuel menait deuil sur Saül, parce que l'Éternel s'était repenti d'avoir établi Saül roi sur Israël.

KJV ³⁵ And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

S21 ³⁵ Samuel n'alla plus voir Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort. En effet, il pleurait sur lui, parce que l'Eternel regrettait de l'avoir établi roi d'Israël.

KJV ¹ And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

KJV ² And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.

KJV ⁴ And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

KJV ⁵ And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

S21 ⁵ Il répondit: «Oui, je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Eternel. Consacrez-vous et venez avec moi au sacrifice.» Il fit aussi consacrer Isaï et ses fils et les invita au sacrifice.

KJV ⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

DRB ¹¹ Et Samuel dit à Isaï : Sont-ce là tous les jeunes gens ? Et il dit : Il reste encore le plus jeune, et voici, il paît le menu bétail. Et Samuel dit à Isaï : Envoie, et fais-le amener ; car nous ne nous placerons point autour [de la table], jusqu'à ce qu'il soit venu ici.

DRB ¹² Et il envoya et le fit venir. Or il avait le teint rosé, avec de beaux yeux, et était beau de visage. Et l'Éternel dit : Lève-toi, oins-le ; car c'est celui-là.

KJV ¹² And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

S21 ¹² Isaï envoya quelqu'un le chercher. Il était roux, avec de beaux yeux et une belle apparence. L'Eternel dit à Samuel: «Lève-toi, verse de l'huile sur lui, car c'est lui!»

DRB ¹³ Et Samuel prit la corne d'huile, et l'oignit au milieu de ses frères. Et l'Esprit de l'Éternel saisit David*, depuis ce jour-là et dans la suite. Et Samuel se leva et s'en alla à Rama.

KJV ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

S21 ¹³ Samuel prit la corne d'huile et le consacra par onction au milieu de ses frères. L'Esprit de l'Eternel vint sur David, à partir de ce jour et par la suite. Samuel se leva et partit à Rama.

DRB ¹⁴ Et l'Esprit de l'Éternel se retira d'avec Saül, et un mauvais esprit [envoyé] par l'Éternel le troublait.

KJV ¹⁴ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

S21 ¹⁴ L'Esprit de l'Eternel se retira de Saül, et celui-ci fut tourmenté par un mauvais esprit envoyé par l'Eternel.

DRB ¹⁶ Que notre seigneur veuille parler : tes serviteurs sont devant toi, ils chercheront un homme qui sache jouer de la harpe ; et il arrivera que, quand le mauvais esprit [envoyé] de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main et tu t'en trouveras bien.

KJV ¹⁶ Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

S21 ¹⁶ Que notre seigneur parle! Tes serviteurs sont à ta disposition. Ils chercheront un homme qui sache jouer de la harpe. Quand le mauvais esprit envoyé par Dieu sera sur toi, il en jouera et tu seras soulagé.»

DRB ¹⁷ Et Saül dit à ses serviteurs : Je vous prie, trouvez-moi un homme qui sache bien jouer, et amenez-le-moi.

KJV ¹⁷ And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

S21 ¹⁷ Saül répondit à ses serviteurs: «Trouvez-moi donc un homme qui joue bien et amenez-le-moi.»

DRB ¹⁸ Et l'un des jeunes hommes répondit et dit : Voici, j'ai vu un fils d'Isaï, le Bethléhémite, qui sait jouer, un homme fort et vaillant, et un homme de guerre, et qui a l'intelligence des choses*, et un bel homme, et l'Éternel est avec lui.

KJV ¹⁸ Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.

S21 ¹⁸ L'un des serviteurs prit la parole et dit: «J'ai vu un fils d'Isaï, le Bethléhémite, qui sait jouer. C'est aussi un homme fort et vaillant, un guerrier. Il parle bien, a une belle apparence et l'Eternel est avec lui.»

DRB ¹⁹ Et Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, et dit : Envoie-moi David ton fils, qui est avec le menu bétail.

KJV ¹⁹ Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

KJV ²⁰ And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

S21 ²⁰ Isaï prit un âne qu'il chargea de pain, d'une outre de vin et d'un chevreau, et il envoya tout cela à Saül par l'intermédiaire de son fils David.

DRB ²¹ Et David vint vers Saül, et il se tint devant lui ; et [Saül] l'aima beaucoup, et il fut son porteur d'armes.

KJV ²¹ And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

S21 ²¹ David arriva vers Saül et se présenta devant lui. Il plut beaucoup à Saül et il fut désigné pour porter ses armes.

DRB ²² Et Saül envoya vers Isaï, disant : Que David, je te prie, se tienne devant moi ; car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux.

S21 ²² Saül fit dire à Isaï: «Je t'en prie, laisse David à mon service, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux.»

DRB ²³ Et il arrivait que, quand l'esprit [envoyé] de Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et en jouait de sa main ; et Saül était soulagé et se trouvait bien, et le mauvais esprit se retirait de dessus lui.

KJV ²³ And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

S21 ²³ Lorsque le mauvais esprit envoyé par Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et en jouait. Saül se calmait alors et se sentait mieux, et le mauvais esprit s'éloignait de lui.

DRB ¹ Et les Philistins rassemblèrent leurs armées* pour faire la guerre, et ils s'assemblèrent à Soco, qui appartient à Juda, et campèrent entre Soco et Azéka, à Éphès-Dammim.

KJV ¹ Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

DRB ² Et Saül et les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent, et campèrent dans la vallée d'Éla*, et se rangèrent en bataille contre les Philistins.

KJV ² And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

S21 ² Saül et les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent aussi. Ils installèrent leur camp dans la vallée d'Ela et ils se rangèrent en ordre de bataille contre les Philistins.

KJV ⁴ And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

S21 ⁴ Un homme sortit alors du camp des Philistins et s'avança entre les deux armées. Il s'appelait Goliath, venait de Gath et mesurait environ 3 mètres.

WLC ⁴ וַיֵּצֵ֤א אִֽישׁ־ הַבֵּנַ֙יִם֙ מִמַּחֲנ֣וֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים גָּלְיָ֥ת שְׁמ֖וֹ מִגַּ֑ת גָּבְה֕וֹ שֵׁ֥שׁ אַמּ֖וֹת וָזָֽרֶת׃

DRB ⁵ Et il avait un casque d'airain sur sa tête, et était revêtu d'une cotte de mailles à écailles ; et le poids de la cotte de mailles était de cinq mille sicles d'airain ;

KJV ⁵ And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

S21 ⁵ Il avait sur la tête un casque en bronze et il portait une cuirasse à écailles en bronze qui pesait près de 60 kilos.

WLC ⁵ וְכ֤וֹבַע נְחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ עַל־ רֹאשׁ֔וֹ וְשִׁרְי֥וֹן קַשְׂקַשִּׂ֖ים ה֣וּא לָב֑וּשׁ וּמִשְׁקַל֙ הַשִּׁרְי֔וֹן חֲמֵשֶׁת־ אֲלָפִ֥ים שְׁקָלִ֖ים נְחֹֽשֶֽׁת׃

DRB ⁶ et il avait des jambières d'airain aux jambes*, et un javelot d'airain entre ses épaules ;

KJV ⁶ And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

S21 ⁶ Il avait des jambières en bronze et tenait un javelot en bronze en bandoulière.

WLC ⁶ וּמִצְחַ֥ת נְחֹ֖שֶׁת עַל־ רַגְלָ֑יו וְכִיד֥וֹן נְחֹ֖שֶׁת בֵּ֥ין כְּתֵפָֽיו׃

DRB ⁷ et le bois de sa lance était comme l'ensouple des tisserands, et le fer de sa lance pesait six cents sicles de fer ; et celui qui portait son bouclier marchait devant lui.

KJV ⁷ And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

S21 ⁷ Le bois de sa lance avait la grosseur d'un cylindre de métier à tisser, et la lance, en fer, pesait 7 kilos. Celui qui portait son bouclier marchait devant lui.

WLC ⁷ חֲנִית֗וֹ כִּמְנוֹר֙ אֹֽרְגִ֔ים וְלַהֶ֣בֶת חֲנִית֔וֹ שֵׁשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת שְׁקָלִ֖ים בַּרְזֶ֑ל וְנֹשֵׂ֥א הַצִּנָּ֖ה הֹלֵ֥ךְ לְפָנָֽיו׃

DRB ⁸ Et il se tenait là et criait aux troupes rangées d'Israël, et leur disait : Pourquoi sortez-vous pour vous ranger en bataille ? Ne suis-je pas le Philistin, et vous, des serviteurs de Saül ? Choisissez-vous un homme, et qu'il descende contre moi.

KJV ⁸ And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

S21 ⁸ Le Philistin s'arrêta et s'adressa aux troupes d'Israël rangées en ordre de bataille. Il leur cria: «Pourquoi sortez-vous pour vous ranger en ordre de bataille? Ne suis-je pas le Philistin et n'êtes-vous pas des esclaves de Saül? Choisissez un homme qui descende contre moi!

WLC ⁸ וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֗ד וַיִּקְרָא֙ אֶל־ מַעַרְכֹ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם לָ֥מָּה תֵצְא֖וּ לַעֲרֹ֣ךְ מִלְחָמָ֑ה הֲל֧וֹא אָנֹכִ֣י הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗י וְאַתֶּם֙ עֲבָדִ֣ים לְשָׁא֔וּל בְּרוּ־ לָכֶ֥ם אִ֖ישׁ וְיֵרֵ֥ד אֵלָֽי׃

DRB ⁹ S'il est capable de combattre avec moi et qu'il me tue, nous serons vos serviteurs ; et si moi j'ai l'avantage sur lui et que je le tue, c'est vous qui serez nos serviteurs et qui nous servirez.

KJV ⁹ If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

S21 ⁹ S'il peut me battre et qu'il me tue, nous serons vos esclaves. Mais si je l'emporte sur lui et que je le tue, vous serez nos esclaves et vous nous servirez.»

DRB ¹⁰ Et le Philistin dit : Moi, j'ai outragé aujourd'hui les troupes rangées d'Israël ! Donnez-moi un homme, et nous combattrons ensemble.

KJV ¹⁰ And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

S21 ¹⁰ Le Philistin dit encore: «Je jette aujourd'hui un défi à l'armée d'Israël: donnez-moi un homme, pour que nous nous battions ensemble!»

KJV ¹¹ When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

DRB ¹² Et David était fils de cet homme éphratien de Bethléhem de Juda, dont le nom était Isaï ; et il avait huit fils ; et cet homme, aux jours de Saül, était vieux, avancé en âge parmi les hommes.

KJV ¹² Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

S21 ¹² Or David était le fils de l'Ephratien de Bethléhem en Juda nommé Isaï qui avait huit fils. A l'époque de Saül, cet homme était vieux, d'un âge avancé.

DRB ¹³ Et les trois fils aînés d'Isaï étaient partis, ils avaient suivi Saül à la guerre. Et les noms de ses trois fils qui étaient partis pour la guerre, étaient : Éliab, le premier-né, et Abinadab, le* second, et Shamma, le troisième.

KJV ¹³ And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

KJV ¹⁶ And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

DRB ¹⁷ Et Isaï dit à David, son fils : Prends, je te prie, pour tes frères, cet épha de froment rôti et ces dix pains, et porte-les vite au camp vers tes frères.

KJV ¹⁷ And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;

S21 ¹⁷ Isaï dit à son fils David: «Prends pour tes frères cette mesure de grain rôti et ces 10 pains, et cours au camp vers tes frères.

DRB ¹⁸ Et ces dix fromages de lait, tu les porteras au chef du millier ; et tu t'informeras touchant le bien-être de tes frères, et tu prendras d'eux un gage.

KJV ¹⁸ And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

S21 ¹⁸ Porte aussi ces 10 fromages au chef de leur millier. Tu verras si tes frères se portent bien et tu m'en apporteras une preuve de leur part.

DRB ¹⁹ Or Saül, et eux, et tous les hommes d'Israël, étaient dans la vallée d'Éla, faisant la guerre contre les Philistins.

DRB ²⁰ Et David se leva de bonne heure le matin et laissa le menu bétail à un gardien, et prit sa charge et s'en alla, comme Isaï le lui avait commandé ; et il vint à l'enceinte formée par les chars. Or l'armée sortait pour se ranger en bataille, et on poussait le cri de guerre ;

KJV ²⁰ And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

S21 ²⁰ David se leva de bon matin. Il laissa les brebis à un gardien, prit ses affaires et partit, comme Isaï le lui avait ordonné. Lorsqu'il arriva au camp, l'armée était en marche pour se ranger en ordre de bataille et poussait des cris de guerre.

DRB ²² Et David laissa aux mains de celui qui gardait le bagage les objets qu'il portait, et courut vers la ligne de bataille ; et il vint et interrogea ses frères touchant leur bien-être.

KJV ²² And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

S21 ²² David confia les affaires qu'il transportait au gardien du matériel et courut vers les rangs de l'armée. Aussitôt arrivé, il demanda à ses frères comment ils allaient.

DRB ²³ Et comme il parlait avec eux, voici le champion, nommé Goliath, le Philistin de Gath, qui s'avançait hors des rangs des Philistins, et il proféra les mêmes paroles ; et David l'entendit.

KJV ²³ And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.

S21 ²³ Il était en train de parler avec eux lorsque le Philistin de Gath appelé Goliath s'avança entre les deux armées, hors des rangs des Philistins. Il tint les mêmes discours que les autres fois et David les entendit.

DRB ²⁴ Et tous les hommes d'Israël, voyant l'homme, s'enfuirent de devant lui et eurent très peur.

KJV ²⁴ And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

S21 ²⁴ A la vue de cet homme, tous les Israélites prirent la fuite et furent remplis de peur.

DRB ²⁵ Et les hommes d'Israël dirent : Avez-vous vu cet homme-là qui monte ? car c'est pour outrager Israël qu'il est monté. Et il arrivera que l'homme qui le frappera, le roi l'enrichira de grandes richesses, et il lui donnera sa fille, et affranchira la maison de son père en Israël.

KJV ²⁵ And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

S21 ²⁵ Chacun disait: «Avez-vous vu s'avancer cet homme? C'est pour jeter un défi à Israël qu'il s'est avancé! Si quelqu'un le tue, le roi le comblera de richesses, il lui donnera sa fille et libérera sa famille de tout impôt en Israël.»

DRB ²⁶ Et David parla aux hommes qui se tenaient là avec lui, disant : Que sera-t-il fait à l'homme qui aura frappé ce Philistin-là, et qui aura ôté l'opprobre de dessus Israël ? Car qui est ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, pour outrager les troupes rangées du Dieu vivant ?

KJV ²⁶ And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

S21 ²⁶ David demanda aux hommes qui se trouvaient près de lui: «Que fera-t-on pour celui qui tuera ce Philistin et qui écartera la honte d'Israël? Qui est donc ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, pour insulter l'armée du Dieu vivant?»

DRB ²⁸ Et Éliab son frère aîné, entendit pendant qu'il parlait à ces hommes ; et la colère d'Éliab s'embrasa contre David, et il [lui] dit : Pourquoi donc es-tu descendu ? et à qui as-tu laissé ce peu de brebis dans le désert ? Je connais, moi, ton orgueil et la méchanceté de ton cœur ; car c'est pour voir la bataille que tu es descendu.

KJV ²⁸ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

S21 ²⁸ Eliab, le frère aîné de David, l'avait entendu parler à ces hommes, et il fut enflammé de colère contre lui. DRB ²⁹ Et David dit : Qu'ai-je fait maintenant ? N'y a-t-il pas de quoi ?

KJV ²⁹ And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

S21 ²⁹ David répondit: «Qu'ai-je donc fait? N'ai-je pas le droit de m'exprimer?»

DRB ³⁰ Et il se détourna d'auprès de lui vers un autre, et dit les mêmes paroles ; et le peuple lui répondit comme la première fois.

DRB ³² Et David dit à Saül : Que le cœur ne défaille à personne à cause de lui ! Ton serviteur ira et combattra avec ce Philistin.

KJV ³² And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

S21 ³² David dit à Saül: «Que personne ne se décourage à cause de ce Philistin! Moi, ton serviteur, j'irai me battre contre lui.»

WLC ³² וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל־ שָׁא֔וּל אַל־ יִפֹּ֥ל לֵב־ אָדָ֖ם עָלָ֑יו עַבְדְּךָ֣ יֵלֵ֔ךְ וְנִלְחַ֖ם עִם־ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֥י הַזֶּֽה׃

DRB ³³ Et Saül dit à David : Tu n'es pas capable d'aller contre ce Philistin pour combattre avec lui ; car tu es un jeune homme, et lui, il est homme de guerre dès sa jeunesse.

KJV ³³ And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

S21 ³³ Saül dit à David: «Tu ne peux pas aller te battre contre ce Philistin. Tu n'es qu'un enfant, alors que lui, il est un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse.»

DRB ³⁵ Et je sortis après lui et le frappai, et je délivrai [le mouton] de sa gueule ; et il se leva contre moi, et je le saisis par sa barbe, et le frappai, et le tuai.

KJV ³⁵ And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

S21 ³⁵ je courais après lui, je le frappais et j'arrachais la brebis de sa gueule. S'il m'attaquait, je l'attrapais par la gorge, je le frappais et je le tuais.

DRB ³⁶ Ton serviteur a frappé et le lion et l'ours ; et ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, sera comme l'un d'eux, car il a outragé les troupes rangées du Dieu vivant.

KJV ³⁶ Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

S21 ³⁶ C'est ainsi que ton serviteur a frappé le lion et l'ours, et ce sera aussi le sort du Philistin, de cet incirconcis, car il a insulté l'armée du Dieu vivant.»

WLC ³⁶ גַּ֧ם אֶֽת־ הָאֲרִ֛י גַּם־ הַדּ֖וֹב הִכָּ֣ה עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וְֽ֠הָיָה הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֨י הֶעָרֵ֤ל הַזֶּה֙ כְּאַחַ֣ד מֵהֶ֔ם כִּ֣י חֵרֵ֔ף מַעַרְכֹ֖ת אֱלֹהִ֥ים חַיִּֽים׃

DRB ³⁷ Et David dit : L'Éternel qui m'a délivré de la patte du lion et de la patte de l'ours, lui me délivrera de la main de ce Philistin. Et Saül dit à David : Va, et que l'Éternel soit avec toi.

KJV ³⁷ David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

S21 ³⁷ David ajouta: «L'Eternel m'a délivré de la griffe du lion et de la patte de l'ours, et il me délivrera aussi de ce Philistin.» Saül dit à David: «Vas-y donc et que l'Eternel soit avec toi!»

DRB ³⁸ Et Saül revêtit David de ses vêtements, et lui mit un casque d'airain sur la tête, et le revêtit d'une cotte de mailles.

KJV ³⁸ And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

S21 ³⁸ Saül fit enfiler sa tenue à David. Il plaça sur sa tête un casque en bronze et le revêtit d'une cuirasse.

WLC ³⁸ וַיַּלְבֵּ֨שׁ שָׁא֤וּל אֶת־ דָּוִד֙ מַדָּ֔יו וְנָתַ֛ן ק֥וֹבַע נְחֹ֖שֶׁת עַל־ רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַיַּלְבֵּ֥שׁ אֹת֖וֹ שִׁרְיֽוֹן׃

DRB ³⁹ Et David ceignit son épée par-dessus ses vêtements, et voulut marcher, car il ne l'avait pas essayé. Et David dit à Saül. Je ne puis marcher avec ces choses, car je ne l'ai [jamais] essayé. Et David les ôta de dessus lui ;

KJV ³⁹ And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

S21 ³⁹ David mit l'épée de Saül par-dessus ses habits et voulut marcher, car il n'avait encore jamais essayé, mais il dit à Saül: «Je ne peux pas marcher avec cette armure, je n'y suis pas habitué.» Et il s'en débarrassa.

WLC ³⁹ וַיַּחְגֹּ֣ר דָּוִ֣ד אֶת־ חַ֠רְבּוֹ מֵעַ֨ל לְמַדָּ֜יו וַיֹּ֣אֶל לָלֶכֶת֮ כִּ֣י לֹֽא־ נִסָּה֒ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל־ שָׁא֗וּל לֹ֥א אוּכַ֛ל לָלֶ֥כֶת בָּאֵ֖לֶּה כִּ֣י לֹ֣א נִסִּ֑יתִי וַיְסִרֵ֥ם דָּוִ֖ד מֵעָלָֽיו׃

DRB ⁴⁰ et il prit son bâton en sa main, et se choisit du torrent cinq pierres lisses, et les mit dans le sac de berger qu'il avait, dans la poche ; et il avait sa fronde à la main. Et il s'approcha du Philistin.

KJV ⁴⁰ And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

DRB ⁴¹ Et le Philistin s'avança, allant et s'approchant de David, et, devant lui, l'homme qui portait son bouclier.

KJV ⁴¹ And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

DRB ⁴² Et le Philistin regarda et vit David, et le méprisa ; car c'était un jeune homme au teint rosé, et beau de visage.

KJV ⁴² And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

S21 ⁴² Le Philistin regarda David et, lorsqu'il l'aperçut, il le méprisa, car il ne vit en lui qu'un enfant roux à la belle apparence.

DRB ⁴³ Et le Philistin dit à David : Suis-je un chien, moi, que tu viennes à moi avec des bâtons ? Et le Philistin maudit David par ses dieux.

DRB ⁴⁶ En ce jour, l'Éternel te livrera en ma main ; et je te frapperai, et j'ôterai ta tête de dessus toi, et je donnerai en ce jour les cadavres du camp des philistins aux oiseaux des cieux et aux animaux de la terre ; et toute la terre saura qu'il y a un Dieu pour Israël :

KJV ⁴⁶ This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

S21 ⁴⁶ Aujourd'hui l'Eternel va te livrer entre mes mains. Je t'abattrai et je te couperai la tête. Aujourd'hui je vais donner les cadavres du camp des Philistins aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes sauvages. Toute la terre saura alors qu'Israël a un Dieu,

DRB ⁴⁷ et toute cette congrégation saura que ce n'est ni par l'épée, ni par la lance, que l'Éternel sauve ; car la bataille est à l'Éternel, et il vous livrera entre nos mains.

KJV ⁴⁷ And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.

S21 ⁴⁷ et toute cette assemblée saura que ce n'est ni par l'épée ni par la lance que l'Eternel sauve. En effet, la victoire appartient à l'Eternel et il vous livre entre nos mains.»

DRB ⁴⁸ Et il arriva que, comme le Philistin se levait et s'avançait, et s'approchait à la rencontre de David, David se hâta et courut vers la ligne de bataille, à la rencontre du Philistin.

KJV ⁴⁸ And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

S21 ⁴⁸ Dès que le Philistin se mit à marcher vers lui, David courut sur le champ de bataille à sa rencontre.

DRB ⁴⁹ Et David mit sa main à son sac, et y prit une pierre, et la lança avec sa fronde ; et il frappa le Philistin au front, et la pierre s'enfonça dans son front ; et il tomba sur sa face contre terre.

KJV ⁴⁹ And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

S21 ⁴⁹ Il porta la main à sa gibecière, y prit une pierre et la lança avec sa fronde. Il frappa le Philistin au front et la pierre s'y enfonça. Le Philistin tomba le visage contre terre.

DRB ⁵⁰ Et David, avec une fronde et une pierre, fut plus fort que le Philistin, et frappa le Philistin et le tua ; et David n'avait pas d'épée en sa main.

KJV ⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

S21 ⁵⁰ Ainsi, avec une fronde et une pierre, David fut plus fort que le Philistin; il le frappa et le mit à mort sans avoir d'épée à la main.

DRB ⁵¹ Et David courut, et se tint sur le Philistin, et prit son épée, et la tira de son fourreau, et le tua, et lui coupa la tête. Et les Philistins, voyant que leur homme fort était mort, s'enfuirent.

KJV ⁵¹ Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

KJV ⁵² And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

DRB ⁵⁷ Et comme David revenait d'avoir frappé le Philistin, Abner le prit et l'amena devant Saül, ayant la tête du Philistin à la main.

KJV ⁵⁷ And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

S21 ⁵⁷ Quand David fut de retour après avoir tué le Philistin, Abner le prit et le conduisit devant Saül. David tenait à la main la tête du Philistin.

KJV ⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
