¹ Lorsque le fils de Saül apprit qu'Abner était mort à Hébron, ses mains furent sans force, et tout Israël fut dans la consternation. ² Le fils de Saül avait deux chefs de bandes, dont l'un s'appelait Baana, et l'autre Réchab, tous deux fils de Remmon de Béroth, d'entre les fils de Benjamin. Car Béroth est aussi comptée comme faisant partie de Benjamin, ³ et les Bérothites s'étaient enfuis à Géthaïm, et ils y ont habité jusqu'à ce jour. ⁴ Jonathas, fils de Saül, avait un fils perclus des deux pieds. Cet enfant était âgé de cinq ans lorsque la nouvelle de la mort de Saül et de Jonathas arriva de Jezraël ; sa nourrice l'avait pris et s'était enfuie, et, dans la précipitation de sa fuite, il était tombé et devenu boîteux ; il s'appelait Miphiboseth. ⁵ Or les fils de Remmon de Béroth, Réchab et Baana, vinrent et entrèrent pendant la chaleur du jour dans la maison d'Isboseth, qui était couché pour le repos de midi. ⁶ Ayant pénétré jusqu'au milieu de la maison pour prendre du blé, ils le frappèrent au ventre. Et Réchab, et Baana, son frère, se glissèrent à la dérobée. ⁷ Quand ils entrèrent dans la maison, Isboseth reposait sur son lit, dans sa chambre à coucher ; ils le frappèrent à mort et, lui ayant coupé la tête, ils la prirent, et marchèrent toute la nuit au travers de la Plaine. ⁸ Ils apportèrent la tête d'Isboseth à David, à Hébron, et ils dirent au roi : "Voici la tête d'Isboseth, fils de Saül, ton ennemi, qui en voulait à ta vie. Yahweh a accordé aujourd'hui au roi, mon seigneur, la vengeance sur Saül et sur sa race." ⁹ David répondit à Réchab et à Baana, son frère, fils de Remmon de Béroth, et leur dit : "Yahweh, qui m'a délivré de tout péril, est vivant ! ¹⁰ Celui qui est venu me dire cette nouvelle : Voici que Saül est mort, celui-là était à ses propres yeux porteur d'une bonne nouvelle ; mais je l'ai fait saisir et mettre à mort à Siceleg, pour lui donner le salaire de son bon message ; ¹¹ combien plus, quand de méchants hommes ont assassiné un homme innocent dans sa maison, sur sa couche, dois-je redemander son sang de vos mains et vous exterminer de la terre ?" ¹² Et David ordonna aux jeunes gens de les tuer ; ils leurs coupèrent les mains et les pieds et les pendirent au bord de l'étang d'Hébron. Puis, ayant pris la tête d'Isboseth, ils l'enterrèrent dans le tombeau d'Abner à Hébron.

2 Samuel 5

¹ Toutes les tribus d'Israël vinrent auprès de David, à Hébron, et dirent : "Nous voici : nous sommes tes os et ta chair. ² Autrefois déjà, quand Saül était notre roi, c'était toi qui menais et ramenais Israël. Et Yahweh t'a dit : "C'est toi qui paîtras mon peuple d'Israël, et c'est toi qui seras prince sur Israël." ³ Ainsi tous les anciens d'Israël vinrent auprès du roi, à Hébron, et le roi David fit alliance avec eux devant Yahweh, à Hébron, et ils oignirent David pour roi sur Israël. ⁴ David était âgé de trente ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna quarante ans. ⁵ A Hébron, il régna sur Juda sept ans et six mois, et il régna à Jérusalem trente-trois ans sur tout Israël et Juda. ⁶ Le roi marcha avec ses hommes sur Jérusalem contre les Jébuséens, habitants du pays. Et on dit à David : "Tu n'entreras pas ici, mais les aveugles et les boiteux te repousseront". Ce qui voulait dire : David n'entrera jamais ici. ⁷ Mais David s'empara de la forteresse de Sion : c'est la cité de David. ⁸ David dit ce jour-là : "Quiconque frappera les Jébuséens et atteindra par le canal..." Quant aux boiteux et aux aveugles, ce sont les ennemis de l'âme de David. De là vient le dicton : "L'aveugle et le boiteux n'entreront point dans la maison." ⁹ David s'établit dans la forteresse et l'appela cité de David, et David bâtit à l'entour, à partir du Mello, et à l'intérieur. ¹⁰ David devenait de plus en plus grand, et Yahweh, le Dieu des armées, était avec lui. ¹¹ Hiram, roi de Tyr, envoya des messagers à David, avec des bois de cèdre, ainsi que des charpentiers et des tailleurs de pierres, qui bâtirent une maison à David. ¹² Et David reconnut que Yahweh l'affermissait comme roi sur Israël, et qu'il élevait sa royauté à cause de son peuple d'Israël. ¹³ David prit encore des concubines et des femmes de Jérusalem, après qu'il fut venu d'Hébron, et il naquit encore à David des fils et des filles. ¹⁴ Voici les noms de ceux qui lui naquirent à Jérusalem : Samua, Sobab, Nathan, Salomon, ¹⁵ Jébahar, Elisus, Népheg, Japhia, ¹⁶ Elisama, Elioda et Eliphaleth. ¹⁷ Les Philistins apprirent qu'on avait oint David pour roi sur Israël ; alors tous les Philistins montèrent pour chercher David. David l'apprit et il descendit à la forteresse. ¹⁸ Les Philistins, étant venus, se répandirent dans la vallée des Rephaïm. ¹⁹ David consulta Yahweh, en disant : "Monterai-je contre les Philistins ? Les livrerez-vous entre mes mains ?" Et Yahweh dit à David : "Monte, car je livrerai certainement les Philistins entre tes mains." ²⁰ David vint donc à Baal-Pharasim, et là David les battit. Et il dit : "Yahweh a brisé mes ennemis devant moi, comme les eaux brisent les digues." C'est pourquoi on a donné à ce lieu le nom de Baal-Pharasim. ²¹ Ils laissèrent là leurs idoles, et David et ses gens les emportèrent. ²² Les Philistins montèrent de nouveau et se répandirent dans la vallée des Rephaïm. ²³ Et David consulta Yahweh, qui lui dit : "Ne monte pas ; tourne-les par derrière, et tu arriveras sur eux du côté des balsamiers. ²⁴ Quand tu entendras un bruit de pas dans les cimes des balsamiers, alors attaque vivement, car alors Yahweh sortira devant toi pour porter ses coups dans l'armée des Philistins." ²⁵ David fit ainsi, comme Yahweh le lui ordonnait, et il battit les Philistins depuis Gabaa jusqu'à Géser.

2 Samuel 6

¹ David rassembla encore toute l'élite d'Israël, au nombre de trente mille hommes. ² Accompagné de tout le peuple réuni auprès de lui, David se leva et se mit en marche depuis Baalé-Juda, pour faire monter de là l'arche de Dieu, sur laquelle est invoqué le Nom, le nom de Yahweh des armées qui siège sur les Chérubins. ³ Ils placèrent sur un chariot neuf l'arche de Dieu, et l'emmenèrent de la maison d'Abinadab, qui était sur la colline ; Oza et Achio, fils d'Abinadab, conduisaient le chariot neuf ⁴ (et ils l'emmenèrent de la maison d'Abinadab, qui était sur la colline) avec l'arche de Dieu ; Achio marchait devant l'arche. ⁵ David et toute la maison d'Israël dansaient devant Yahweh, au son de toutes sortes d'instruments de bois de cyprès, de harpes, de luths, de tambourins, de sistres et de cymbales. ⁶ Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés à l'aire de Nachon, Oza étendit la main vers l'arche de Dieu et la saisit, parce que les boeufs avaient fait un faux pas. ⁷ La colère de Yahweh s'enflamma contre Oza, et Dieu le frappa sur place, à cause de sa précipitation ; et Oza mourut là, près de l'arche de Dieu. ⁸ David fut fâché de ce que Yahweh avait ainsi porté un coup à Oza ; et ce lieu a été appelé jusqu'à ce jour Phéréts-Oza. ⁹ David eut peur de Yahweh en ce jour-là, et il dit : "Comment l'arche de Yahweh viendrait-elle vers moi ?" ¹⁰ Et David ne voulut pas retirer l'arche de Yahweh chez lui, dans la cité de David ; et la David la fit conduire dans la maison d'Obédédom de Geth. ¹¹ L'arche de Yahweh resta trois mois dans la maison d'Obédédom de Geth, et Yahweh bénit Obédédom et toute sa maison. ¹² On vint dire au roi David : "Yahweh a béni la maison d'Obédédom et tout ce qui est à lui, à cause de l'arche de Dieu." Et David se mit en route, et il fit monter l'arche de Dieu de la maison d'Obédédom dans la cité de David, avec un joyeux cortège. ¹³ Quand les porteurs de l'arche de Yahweh eurent fait six pas, on offrit en sacrifice un boeuf et un veau gras. ¹⁴ David dansait de toute sa force devant Yahweh, et David était ceint d'un éphod de lin. ¹⁵ David et toute la maison d'Israël firent monter l'arche de Yahweh avec des cris de joie et au son des trompettes. ¹⁶ Lorsque l'arche de Yahweh entra dans la cité de David, Michol, fille de Saül, regarda par la fenêtre et, voyant le roi David sauter et danser devant Yahweh, elle le méprisa dans son coeur. ¹⁷ Après qu'on eut fait entrer l'arche de Yahweh et qu'on l'eut déposée à sa place, au milieu de la tente que David avait dressée pour elle, David offrit devant Yahweh des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques. ¹⁸ Quand David eut achevé d'offrir les holocaustes et les sacrifices pacifiques, il bénit le peuple au nom de Yahweh des armées. ¹⁹ Puis il distribua à tout le peuple, à toute la multitude d'Israël, hommes et femmes, à chacun un gâteau, une portion de viande et une pâte de raisins. Et tout le peuple s'en alla chacun dans sa maison. ²⁰ Comme David s'en retournait pour bénir sa maison, Michol, fille de Saül, sortit à la rencontre de David, et elle dit : "Quelle gloire aujourd'hui pour le roi d'Israël de s'être découvert aujourd'hui aux yeux des servantes de ses serviteurs, comme se découvrirait un homme de rien ! ²¹ David répondit à Michol : "C'est devant Yahweh, qui m'a choisi de préférence à ton père et à toute sa maison pour m'établir prince sur son peuple, sur Israël, c'est devant Yahweh que j'ai dansé. ²² Je m'humilierai encore plus que cela et je serai vil à mes propres yeux, et auprès des servantes dont tu parles, auprès d'elles, je serai en honneur." ²³ Et Michol, fille de Saül, n'eut point d'enfant jusqu'au jour de sa mort.

   ¹ And when Saul's son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. ² And Saul's son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin. ³ And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.) ⁴ And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. ⁵ And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. ⁶ And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. ⁷ For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. ⁸ And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
   ⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings: ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? ¹² And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.

2 Samuel 5

   ¹ Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. ² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. ⁴ David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. ⁵ In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.
   ⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither. ⁷ Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. ⁹ So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. ¹⁰ And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.
   ¹¹ And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house. ¹² And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake. ¹³ And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David. ¹⁴ And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammuah, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, ¹⁵ Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia, ¹⁶ And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.
   ¹⁷ But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold. ¹⁸ The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁹ And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand. ²⁰ And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim. ²¹ And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them. ²² And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. ²³ And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. ²⁴ And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines. ²⁵ And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

2 Samuel 6

   ¹ Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. ² And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. ³ And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. ⁴ And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. ⁵ And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
   ⁶ And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. ⁷ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. ⁸ And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day. ⁹ And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me? ¹⁰ So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. ¹¹ And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household.
   ¹² And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness. ¹³ And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. ¹⁴ And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. ¹⁵ So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. ¹⁶ And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. ¹⁷ And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. ¹⁸ And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. ¹⁹ And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
   ²⁰ Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! ²¹ And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD. ²² And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour. ²³ Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.
