   ¹ Et quand le fils de Saül apprit qu'Abner était mort à Hébron, ses mains furent affaiblies, et tout Israël fut troublé. ² Et il y avait deux hommes, chefs de bandes du fils de Saül ; le nom de l'un était Baana, et le nom du second, Récab : [ils étaient] fils de Rimmon, le Beérothien, d'entre les fils de Benjamin ; car aussi Beéroth est comptée comme étant de Benjamin. ³ Et les Beérothiens s'enfuirent à Guitthaïm, et ils y ont séjourné jusqu'à aujourd'hui. ⁴ Et Jonathan, fils de Saül, avait un fils perclus des pieds ; il était âgé de cinq ans lorsque le bruit touchant Saül et Jonathan vint de Jizreël ; et sa nourrice l'emporta, et s'enfuit ; et il arriva que, comme elle se hâtait de fuir, il tomba et devint boiteux ; et son nom était Mephibosheth*. ⁵ Et les fils de Rimmon, le Beérothien, Récab et Baana, s'en allèrent et vinrent, pendant la chaleur du jour, dans la maison d'Ish-Bosheth ; et il était couché pour son repos de midi. ⁶ Et ils entrèrent jusque dans l'intérieur de la maison, comme pour prendre du froment, et ils le frappèrent au ventre ; et Récab et Baana, son frère, s'échappèrent. ⁷ Ils entrèrent dans la maison pendant qu'il était couché sur son lit dans sa chambre à coucher, et ils le frappèrent et le tuèrent ; et ils lui ôtèrent la tête, et ils prirent sa tête, et s'en allèrent toute la nuit par le chemin de la plaine*. ⁸ Et ils apportèrent la tête d'Ish-Bosheth à David, à Hébron, et ils dirent au roi : Voici la tête d'Ish-Bosheth, fils de Saül, ton ennemi qui cherchait ta vie ; et l'Éternel a donné en ce jour au roi, mon seigneur, d'être vengé de Saül et de sa race*.
   ⁹ Et David répondit à Récab et à Baana son frère, fils de Rimmon, le Beérothien, et leur dit : L'Éternel est vivant, qui a racheté mon âme de toute détresse, ¹⁰ que celui qui me rapporta, disant : Voici, Saül est mort ! et qui était à ses propres yeux comme un messager de bonnes nouvelles, je le saisis et le tuai à Tsiklag, lui donnant [ainsi] le salaire de sa bonne nouvelle : ¹¹ combien plus, quand de méchants hommes ont tué un homme juste dans sa maison, sur son lit ! Et maintenant, ne redemanderai-je pas son sang de votre main ; et ne vous exterminerai-je pas de la terre ? ¹² Et David commanda à ses jeunes hommes, et ils les tuèrent et leur coupèrent les mains et les pieds, et les pendirent au réservoir de Hébron. Et on prit la tête d'Ish-Bosheth, et on l'enterra dans le sépulcre d'Abner, à Hébron.

2 Samuel 5

   ¹ Et toutes les tribus d'Israël vinrent vers David à Hébron, et parlèrent, disant : Voici, nous sommes ton os et ta chair. ² Et autrefois, quand Saül était roi sur nous, c'était toi qui faisais sortir et qui faisais entrer Israël ; et l'Éternel t'a dit : Tu paîtras mon peuple Israël, et tu seras prince sur Israël. ³ Et tous les anciens d'Israël vinrent vers le roi à Hébron ; et le roi David fit alliance avec eux à Hébron, devant l'Éternel ; et ils oignirent David pour roi sur Israël. * ⁴ David était âgé de trente ans lorsqu'il devint roi ; il régna quarante ans. ⁵ Il régna à Hébron, sur Juda, sept ans et six mois ; et, à Jérusalem, il régna trente-trois ans sur tout Israël et Juda.
   ⁶ Et le roi alla avec ses hommes à Jérusalem contre les Jébusiens, habitants du pays ; et ils parlèrent à David, disant : Tu n'entreras point ici ; mais les aveugles et les boiteux te repousseront ; - pour dire : David n'entrera pas ici. ⁷ Mais David prit la forteresse de Sion ; c'est la ville de David. ⁸ Et David dit en ce jour-là : Quiconque frappera les Jébusiens et atteindra le canal, et les boiteux et* les aveugles qui sont haïs de l'âme de David… ! C'est pourquoi on dit : L'aveugle et le boiteux n'entreront pas dans la maison. ⁹ Et David habita dans la forteresse, et l'appela ville de David ; et David bâtit tout autour, depuis Millo* vers l'intérieur. ¹⁰ Et David allait grandissant de plus en plus ; et l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées, était avec lui.
   ¹¹ Et Hiram, roi de Tyr, envoya des messagers à David, et des bois de cèdre, et des charpentiers, et des tailleurs de pierres pour les murailles* ; et ils bâtirent une maison à David. ¹² Et David connut que l'Éternel l'avait établi roi sur Israël, et qu'il avait élevé son royaume à cause de son peuple Israël. ¹³ Et David prit encore des concubines et des femmes de Jérusalem, après qu'il fut venu de Hébron, et il naquit encore à David des fils et des filles. ¹⁴ Et ce sont ici les noms de ceux qui lui naquirent à Jérusalem : Shamua, et Shobab, et Nathan, et Salomon, ¹⁵ et Jibkhar, et Élishua, et Népheg, et Japhia, ¹⁶ et Élishama, et Éliada, et Éliphéleth.
   ¹⁷ Et les Philistins apprirent qu'on avait oint David pour roi sur Israël, et tous les Philistins montèrent pour chercher David ; et David l'apprit, et descendit à la forteresse. ¹⁸ Et les Philistins vinrent et se répandirent dans la vallée des Rephaïm. ¹⁹ Et David interrogea l'Éternel, disant : Monterai-je contre les Philistins ? Et l'Éternel dit à David : Monte, car certainement je livrerai les Philistins en ta main. ²⁰ Et David vint à Baal-Peratsim ; et là David les frappa, et il dit : L'Éternel a fait une brèche au milieu de mes ennemis devant moi, comme une brèche faite par les eaux ; c'est pourquoi il appela le nom de ce lieu Baal-Peratsim*. ²¹ Et ils laissèrent là leurs idoles, et David et ses hommes les emportèrent. ²² Et les Philistins montèrent encore de nouveau, et se répandirent dans la vallée des Rephaïm. ²³ Et David interrogea l'Éternel. Et il dit : Tu ne monteras pas ; tourne-les par derrière, et tu viendras contre eux vis-à-vis des mûriers ; ²⁴ et aussitôt que tu entendras sur le sommet des mûriers un bruit de gens qui marchent, alors tu t'élanceras, car alors l'Éternel sera sorti devant toi pour frapper l'armée* des philistins. ²⁵ Et David fit ainsi, comme l'Éternel lui avait commandé ; et il frappa les Philistins depuis Guéba jusqu'à ce que tu viennes vers Guézer.

2 Samuel 6

   ¹ Et David assembla encore toute l'élite d'Israël, trente mille [hommes]. ² Et David se leva et se mit en marche, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, vers Baalé de Juda, pour en faire monter l'arche de Dieu, qui est appelée du nom, du nom de l'Éternel des armées, qui siège entre les chérubins. ³ Et ils montèrent l'arche de Dieu sur un chariot neuf, et l'emmenèrent de la maison d'Abinadab, qui était sur la colline* ; et Uzza et Akhio, les fils d'Abinadab, conduisaient le chariot neuf. ⁴ Et ils l'emmenèrent, avec l'arche de Dieu, de la maison d'Abinadab, qui était sur la colline*, et Akhio allait devant l'arche. ⁵ Et David et toute la maison d'Israël s'égayaient devant l'Éternel avec toutes sortes [d'instruments] de bois de cyprès* : avec des harpes, et des luths, et des tambourins, et des sistres, et des cymbales.
   ⁶ Et ils arrivèrent à l'aire de Nacon, et Uzza étendit [la main] vers l'arche de Dieu et la saisit, parce que les bœufs avaient bronché*. ⁷ Et la colère de l'Éternel s'embrasa contre Uzza, et Dieu le frappa là à cause de sa faute ; et il mourut là, près de l'arche de Dieu. ⁸ Alors David fut irrité de ce que l'Éternel avait fait une brèche en [la personne d']Uzza ; et il appela ce lieu-là du nom de Pérets-Uzza*, [qui lui est resté] jusqu'à ce jour. ⁹ Et David eut peur de l'Éternel en ce jour-là, et il dit : Comment l'arche de l'Éternel entrerait-elle chez moi ? ¹⁰ Et David ne voulut pas retirer l'arche de l'Éternel chez lui dans la ville de David, mais David la fit détourner dans la maison d'Obed-Édom, le Guitthien. ¹¹ Et l'arche de l'Éternel demeura trois mois dans la maison d'Obed-Édom, le Guitthien ; et l'Éternel bénit Obed-Édom et toute sa maison.
   ¹² Et on rapporta au roi David, en disant : L'Éternel a béni la maison d'Obed-Édom et tout ce qui est à lui, à cause de l'arche de Dieu. Et David alla, et fit monter l'arche de Dieu de la maison d'Obed-Édom dans la ville de David, avec joie. ¹³ Et il arriva que, quand ceux qui portaient l'arche de l'Éternel avaient fait six pas, il sacrifiait un taureau et une bête grasse. ¹⁴ Et David dansait de toute sa force devant l'Éternel ; et David était ceint d'un éphod de lin. ¹⁵ Et David et toute la maison d'Israël faisaient monter l'arche de l'Éternel avec des cris de joie et au son des trompettes. ¹⁶ Et comme l'arche de l'Éternel entrait dans la ville de David, Mical, fille de Saül, regarda par la fenêtre, et elle vit le roi David sautant et dansant devant l'Éternel, et elle le méprisa dans son cœur. ¹⁷ Et ils amenèrent l'arche de l'Éternel, et la placèrent en son lieu, dans la tente que David avait tendue pour elle. Et tout le peuple s'en alla, chacun en sa maison.
   ²⁰ Et David s'en retourna pour bénir sa maison ; et Mical, fille de Saül, sortit à la rencontre de David, et dit : Combien s'est honoré aujourd'hui le roi d'Israël, qui s'est découvert aujourd'hui devant les yeux des servantes de ses serviteurs, comme se découvrirait sans honte un homme de rien ! ²¹ Et David dit à Mical : Ç'a été devant l'Éternel, qui m'a choisi plutôt que ton père et que toute sa maison pour m'établir* prince sur le peuple de l'Éternel, sur Israël ; et j'ai dansé devant l'Éternel ; ²² et je me rendrai plus vil encore que cela, et je serai abaissé à mes yeux ; mais auprès des servantes dont tu as parlé, auprès d'elles, je serai honoré. ²³ Et Mical, fille de Saül, n'eut point d'enfant jusqu'au jour de sa mort.

   ¹ And when Saul's son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. ² And Saul's son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin. ³ And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.) ⁴ And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. ⁵ And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. ⁶ And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. ⁷ For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. ⁸ And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
   ⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings: ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? ¹² And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.

   ¹ Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. ² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. ⁴ David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. ⁵ In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.
   ⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither. ⁷ Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. ⁹ So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. ¹⁰ And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.

Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim. ²¹ And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them. ²² And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. ²³ And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. ²⁴ And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines. ²⁵ And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

   ¹ Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. ² And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. ³ And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. ⁴ And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. ⁵ And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
   ⁶ And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. ⁷ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. ⁸ And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day. ⁹ And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me? ¹⁰ So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. ¹¹ And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household.
   ¹² And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness. ¹³ And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. ¹⁴ And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. ¹⁵ So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. ¹⁶ And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. ¹⁷ And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. ¹⁸ And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. ¹⁹ And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
   ²⁰ Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! ²¹ And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD. ²² And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour. ²³ Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

   ¹⁸ Philisthiim autem venientes diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim.
   ¹⁹ Et consuluit David Dominum, dicens : Si ascendam ad Philisthiim ? et si dabis eos in manu mea ? Et dixit Dominus ad David : Ascende, quia tradens dabo Philisthiim in manu tua.
   ²⁰ Venit ergo David in Baal Pharasim : et percussit eos ibi, et dixit : Divisit Dominus inimicos meos coram me, sicut dividuntur aquæ. Propterea vocatum est nomen loci illius, Baal Pharasim.
   ²¹ Et reliquerunt ibi sculptilia sua, quæ tulit David et viri ejus.
   ²² Et addiderunt adhuc Philisthiim ut ascenderent, et diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim.
   ²³ Consuluit autem David Dominum : Si ascendam contra Philisthæos, et tradas eos in manus meas ? Qui respondit : Non ascendas contra eos, sed gyra post tergum eorum, et venies ad eos ex adverso pyrorum.
   ²⁴ Et cum audieris sonitum gradientis in cacumine pyrorum, tunc inibis prælium : quia tunc egredietur Dominus ante faciem tuam, ut percutiat castra Philisthiim.
   ²⁵ Fecit itaque David sicut præceperat ei Dominus, et percussit Philisthiim de Gabaa usque dum venias Gezer.

2 Samuel 6

   ¹ Congregavit autem rursum David omnes electos ex Israël, triginta millia.
   ² Surrexitque David, et abiit, et universus populus qui erat cum eo de viris Juda, ut adducerent arcam Dei, super quam invocatum est nomen Domini exercituum, sedentis in cherubim super eam.
   ³ Et imposuerunt arcam Dei super plaustrum novum : tuleruntque eam de domo Abinadab, qui erat in Gabaa : Oza autem et Ahio, filii Abinadab, minabant plaustrum novum.
   ⁴ Cumque tulissent eam de domo Abinadab, qui erat in Gabaa, custodiens arcam Dei Ahio præcedebat arcam.
   ⁵ David autem et omnis Israël ludebant coram Domino in omnibus lignis fabrefactis, et citharis et lyris et tympanis et sistris et cymbalis.
   ⁶ Postquam autem venerunt ad aream Nachon, extendit Oza manum ad arcam Dei, et tenuit eam : quoniam calcitrabant boves, et declinaverunt eam.
   ⁷ Iratusque est indignatione Dominus contra Ozam, et percussit eum super temeritate : qui mortuus est ibi juxta arcam Dei.
   ⁸ Contristatus est autem David, eo quod percussisset Dominus Ozam, et vocatum est nomen loci illius : Percussio Ozæ, usque in diem hanc.
   ⁹ Et extimuit David Dominum in die illa, dicens : Quomodo ingredietur ad me arca Domini ?
   ¹⁰ Et noluit divertere ad se arcam Domini in civitatem David : sed divertit eam in domum Obededom Gethæi.
   ¹¹ Et habitavit arca Domini in domo Obededom Gethæi tribus mensibus : et benedixit Dominus Obededom, et omnem domum ejus.
   ¹² Nuntiatumque est regi David quod benedixisset Dominus Obededom, et omnia ejus, propter arcam Dei. Abiit ergo David, et adduxit arcam Dei de domo Obededom in civitatem David cum gaudio : et erant cum David septem chori, et victima vituli.
   ¹³ Cumque transcendissent qui portabant arcam Domini sex passus, immolabat bovem et arietem,
   ¹⁴ et David saltabat totis viribus ante Dominum : porro David erat accinctus ephod lineo.
   ¹⁵ Et David et omnis domus Israël ducebant arcam testamenti Domini in jubilo, et in clangore buccinæ.
   ¹⁶ Cumque intrasset arca Domini in civitatem David, Michol filia Saul, prospiciens per fenestram, vidit regem David subsilientem atque saltantem coram Domino : et despexit eum in corde suo.
   ¹⁷ Et introduxerunt arcam Domini, et imposuerunt eam in loco suo in medio tabernaculi, quod tetenderat ei David : et obtulit David holocausta et pacifica coram Domino.
   ¹⁸ Cumque complesset offerens holocausta et pacifica, benedixit populo in nomine Domini exercituum.
   ¹⁹ Et partitus est universæ multitudini Israël tam viro quam mulieri singulis collyridam panis unam, et assaturam bubulæ carnis unam, et similam frixam oleo : et abiit omnis populus, unusquisque in domum suam.
   ²⁰ Reversusque est David ut benediceret domui suæ : et egressa Michol filia Saul in occursum David, ait : Quam gloriosus fuit hodie rex Israël discooperiens se ante ancillas servorum suorum, et nudatus est, quasi si nudetur unus de scurris.
   ²¹ Dixitque David ad Michol : Ante Dominum, qui elegit me potius quam patrem tuum et quam omnem domum ejus, et præcepit mihi ut essem dux super populum Domini in Israël,
   ²² et ludam, et vilior fiam plus quam factus sum : et ero humilis in oculis meis, et cum ancillis de quibus locuta es, gloriosior apparebo.
   ²³ Igitur Michol filiæ Saul non est natus filius usque in diem mortis suæ.
