2S 4-6 (King James)

   ¹ And when Saul's son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. ² And Saul's son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin. ³ And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.) ⁴ And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. ⁵ And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. ⁶ And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. ⁷ For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. ⁸ And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
   ⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings: ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? ¹² And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.

2 Samuel 5

   ¹ Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. ² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. ⁴ David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. ⁵ In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.
   ⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither. ⁷ Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. ⁹ So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. ¹⁰ And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.
   ¹¹ And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house. ¹² And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake. ¹³ And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David. ¹⁴ And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammuah, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, ¹⁵ Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia, ¹⁶ And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.
   ¹⁷ But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold. ¹⁸ The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁹ And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand. ²⁰ And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim. ²¹ And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them. ²² And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. ²³ And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. ²⁴ And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines. ²⁵ And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

2 Samuel 6

   ¹ Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. ² And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. ³ And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. ⁴ And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. ⁵ And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
   ⁶ And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. ⁷ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. ⁸ And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day. ⁹ And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me? ¹⁰ So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. ¹¹ And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household.
   ¹² And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness. ¹³ And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. ¹⁴ And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. ¹⁵ So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. ¹⁶ And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. ¹⁷ And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. ¹⁸ And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. ¹⁹ And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
   ²⁰ Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! ²¹ And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD. ²² And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour. ²³ Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

2S 4-6 (Martin)

Is-boseth assassiné.

   ¹ Quand le fils de Saül eut appris qu'Abner était mort à Hébron, ses mains devinrent lâches, et tout Israël fut étonné. ² Or le fils de Saül avait deux capitaines de bandes, dont l'un avait nom Bahana, et l'autre Récab, fils de Rimmon Béerothien, des enfants de Benjamin ; car [la ville de] Béeroth était aussi réputée de Benjamin. ³ Et les Béerothiens s'étaient enfuis à Guittajim, et ils y ont fait leur séjour jusqu'à aujourd'hui. ⁴ Et Jonathan, fils de Saül avait un fils blessé aux pieds, âgé de cinq ans, lorsque le bruit [de la mort de] Saül et de Jonathan vint de Jizréhel ; et sa gouvernante le prit, et s'enfuit ; et comme elle se hâtait de fuir, il tomba, et devint boiteux ; et il fut nommé Méphiboseth. ⁵ Récab donc et Bahana fils de Rimmon Béerothien vinrent, et entrèrent pendant la chaleur du jour dans la maison d'Is-boseth, qui prenait son repos du midi. ⁶ Ainsi Récab et Bahana son frère entrèrent jusqu'au milieu de la maison, allant prendre du froment, et ils le frappèrent à la cinquième côte, et se sauvèrent. ⁷ Ils entrèrent donc dans la maison, lorsque Is-boseth était couché sur son lit, dans la chambre où il dormait, et ils le frappèrent, et le tuèrent ; puis ils lui ôtèrent la tête, et la prirent, et ils marchèrent par le chemin de la campagne toute cette nuit-là. ⁸ Et ils apportèrent la tête d'Is-boseth à David à Hébron, et ils dirent au Roi : Voici la tête d'Is-boseth fils de Saül ton ennemi, qui cherchait ta vie ; et l'Eternel a aujourd'hui vengé le Roi mon Seigneur, de Saül et de sa race.
   ⁹ Mais David répondit à Récab et à Bahana son frère, enfants de Rimmon Béerothien, et leur dit : L'Eternel qui a délivré mon âme de toute angoisse, est vivant ; ¹⁰ Que je saisis celui qui vint m'annoncer et me dire : Voilà, Saül est mort, et qui pensait m'apprendre de bonnes nouvelles et je le tuai à Tsiklag, ce qui fut le salaire que je lui devais donner pour ses bonnes nouvelles. ¹¹ Combien plus [dois-je faire punir] ces méchants qui ont tué un homme de bien dans sa maison, sur son lit ? Maintenant donc ne redemanderai-je pas son sang de votre main, et ne vous exterminerai-je pas de la terre ? ¹² David donc fit commandement à ses gens, lesquels les tuèrent et leur coupèrent les mains et les pieds, et les pendirent sur l'étang d'Hébron. Puis on prit la tête d'Is-boseth, et on l'ensevelit au sépulcre d'Abner à Hébron.

2 Samuel 5

David est sacré Roi sur toutes les douze Tribus.

   ¹ Alors toutes les Tribus d'Israël vinrent vers David à Hébron, et lui parlèrent, en disant : Voici, nous sommes tes os et ta chair. ² Et même auparavant, quand Saül était Roi sur nous, tu étais celui qui menais et qui ramenais Israël ; et de plus l'Eternel t'a dit : Tu paîtras mon peuple d'Israël, et tu seras Conducteur d'Israël. ³ Tous les Anciens donc d'Israël vinrent vers le Roi à Hébron ; et le Roi David traita alliance avec eux à Hébron devant l'Eternel ; et ils oignirent David pour Roi sur Israël. ⁴ David était âgé de trente ans quand il commença à régner, [et] il régna quarante ans. ⁵ Il régna à Hébron sur Juda sept ans et six mois ; puis il régna trente-trois ans à Jérusalem sur tout Israël et Juda.
   ⁶ Or le Roi s'en alla avec ses gens à Jérusalem contre les Jébusiens qui habitaient en ce pays-là, lesquels dirent à David : Tu n'entreras point ici que tu n'aies ôté les aveugles et les boiteux ; voulant dire, David n'entrera point ici. ⁷ Néanmoins David prit la forteresse de Sion, qui est la Cité de David. ⁸ Or David avait dit en ce jour-là : Quiconque aura battu les Jébusiens, et aura atteint le canal, et les aveugles et les boiteux qui sont haïs de l'âme de David, [sera récompensé]. C'est pourquoi on dit : Aucun aveugle ni boiteux n'entrera dans cette maison. ⁹ Et David habita dans la forteresse, et l'appela la Cité de David ; et David y bâtit tout alentour, depuis Millo jusqu'au dedans. ¹⁰ Et David faisait toujours des progrès ; car l'Eternel le Dieu des armées était avec lui.
   ¹¹ Hiram aussi Roi de Tyr envoya des messagers à David, et du bois de cèdre, et des charpentiers, et des tailleurs de pierres à bâtir ; et ils bâtirent la maison de David. ¹² Et David connut que l'Eternel l'avait affermi Roi sur Israël, et qu'il avait élevé son Royaume, à cause de son peuple d'Israël. ¹³ Et David prit encore des concubines et des femmes de Jérusalem, après qu'il fut venu d'Hébron, et il lui naquit encore des fils et des filles. ¹⁴ Et ce sont ici les noms de ceux qui lui naquirent à Jérusalem, Sammuah, et Sobab, et Nathan, et Salomon, ¹⁵ Et Jibhar, et Elisuah, et Népheg, et Japhiah, ¹⁶ Et Elisama, et Eljadah, et Eliphelet.
   ¹⁷ 0r quand les Philistins eurent appris qu'on avait oint David pour Roi sur Israël, ils montèrent tous pour chercher David ; et David l'ayant appris, descendit vers la forteresse. ¹⁸ Et les Philistins vinrent, et se répandirent dans la vallée des Réphaïms. ¹⁹ Alors David consulta l'Eternel, en disant : Monterai-je contre les Philistins ? les livreras-tu entre mes mains ? et l'Eternel répondit à David : Monte, car certainement je livrerai les Philistins entre tes mains. ²⁰ Alors David vint en Bahal-pératsim, et les battit là, et il dit : L'Eternel a fait écouler mes ennemis devant moi, comme par un débordement d'eaux ; c'est pourquoi il nomma ce lieu-là, Bahal-pératsim. ²¹ Et ils laissèrent là leurs faux dieux, lesquels David et ses gens emportèrent. ²² Et les Philistins montèrent encore une autre fois, et se répandirent dans la vallée des Réphaïms. ²³ Et David consulta l'Eternel, qui répondit : Tu ne monteras point ; [mais] tu tourneras derrière eux, et iras contr'eux vis-à-vis des meuriers. ²⁴ Et quand tu entendras sur le sommet des meuriers un bruit comme de gens qui marchent, alors remue-toi ; parce que l'Eternel sera sorti alors devant toi pour battre le camp des Philistins. ²⁵ David donc fit ainsi que l'Eternel lui avait commandé ; et battit les Philistins depuis Guébah jusqu'à Guézer.

2 Samuel 6

David fait amener l'Arche . Huza. Hobed-Edom. Mical.

   ¹ David assembla encore tous les hommes d'élite d'Israël, [qui furent] trente mille [hommes]. ² Puis David se leva et partit avec tout le peuple qui était avec lui vers Bahalé de Juda, pour transporter l'Arche de Dieu, duquel le nom est appelé : Le nom de l'Eternel des armées, qui habite entre les Chérubins sur l'Arche. ³ Et ils mirent l'Arche de Dieu sur un chariot tout neuf, et l'emmenèrent de la maison d'Abinadab, qui était au coteau ; et Huza et Ahjo, enfants d'Abinadab, conduisaient le chariot neuf. ⁴ Et ils l'emmenèrent, savoir l'Arche de Dieu de la maison d'Abinadab, qui était au coteau, et Ahjo allait devant l'Arche. ⁵ Et David et toute la maison d'Israël jouaient devant l'Eternel de toutes sortes [d'instruments faits] de bois de sapin, et des violons, des musettes, des tambours, des sistres, et des cymbales.
   ⁶ Et quand ils furent venus jusqu'à l'aire de Nacon, Huza porta [sa main] à l'Arche de Dieu, et la retint, parce que les boeufs avaient glissé. ⁷ Et la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Huza, et Dieu le frappa là à cause de son indiscrétion, et il mourut là près de l'Arche de Dieu. ⁸ Et David fut affligé de ce que l'Eternel avait fait brèche en [la personne] de Huza ; c'est pourquoi on a appelé ce lieu-là jusqu'à aujourd'hui Pérets-Huza. ⁹ Et David eut peur de l'Eternel en ce jour-là, et dit : Comment l'Arche de l'Eternel entrerait-elle chez moi ? ¹⁰ Et David ne voulut point retirer l'Arche de l'Eternel chez soi en la Cité de David, mais il la fit détourner en la maison d'Hobed-Edom Guittien. ¹¹ Et l'Arche de l'Eternel demeura trois mois en la maison d'Hobed-Edom Guittien ; et l'Eternel bénit Hobed-Edom, et toute sa maison.
   ¹² Depuis on vint dire à David : L'Eternel a béni la maison d'Hobed-Edom, et tout ce qui lui appartient, pour l'amour de l'Arche de Dieu ; c'est pourquoi David s'en alla, et amena l'Arche de Dieu de la maison d'Hobed-Edom, en la Cité de David, avec joie. ¹³ Et il arriva que quand ceux qui portaient l'Arche de Dieu eurent marche six pas, on sacrifia des taureaux et des béliers gras. ¹⁴ Et David sautait de toute sa force devant l'Eternel ; et il était ceint d'un Ephod de lin. ¹⁵ Ainsi David et toute la maison d'Israël menaient l'Arche de l'Eternel avec des cris de joie, et au son des trompettes. ¹⁶ Mais comme l'Arche de l'Eternel entrait dans la Cité de David, Mical fille de Saül, regardant par la fenêtre, vit le Roi David sautant de toute sa force devant l'Eternel, et elle le méprisa en son coeur. ¹⁷ Ils emmenèrent donc l'Arche de l'Eternel, et la posèrent en son lieu, dans un Tabernacle que David lui avait tendu. Et David offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de prospérités devant l'Eternel. ¹⁸ Quand David eut achevé d'offrir des holocaustes et des sacrifices de prospérités, il bénit le peuple au nom de l'Eternel des armées. ¹⁹ Et il partagea à tout le peuple, [savoir] à toute la multitude d'Israël, tant aux hommes qu'aux femmes, à chacun un gâteau, une pièce de chair, et une bouteille [de vin] ; et tout le peuple s'en retourna chacun en sa maison.
   ²⁰ Puis David s'en retourna pour bénir sa maison ; et Mical fille de Saül vint au-devant de lui, et lui dit : Que le Roi d'Israël s'est fait aujourd'hui un grand honneur en se découvrant aujourd'hui devant les yeux des servantes de ses serviteurs, comme ferait un homme de néant, sans en avoir honte ! ²¹ Et David dit à Mical : Ç'a été devant l'Eternel, qui m'a choisi plutôt que ton père, et que toute sa maison, et qui m'a commandé d'être le Conducteur de son peuple d'Israël ; c'est pourquoi je me réjouirai devant l'Eternel. ²² Et je me rendrai encore plus abject que [je n'ai fait] cette fois, et je m'estimerai encore moins ; malgré cela je serai honoré devant les servantes dont tu as parlé. ²³ Or Mical fille de Saül n'eut point d'enfants jusqu'au jour de sa mort.
