KJV ¹ Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

KJV ⁵ And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

KJV ⁶ And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

KJV ⁷ And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

KJV ⁸ Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

VULC ⁸ Surrexit interea rex novus super Ægyptum, qui ignorabat Joseph.

KJV ⁹ And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

VULC ⁹ Et ait ad populum suum : Ecce, populus filiorum Israël multus, et fortior nobis est.

KJV ¹⁰ Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

VULC ¹⁰ Venite, sapienter opprimamus eum, ne forte multiplicetur : et si ingruerit contra nos bellum, addatur inimicis nostris, expugnatisque nobis egrediatur de terra.

KJV ¹¹ Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

VULC ¹¹ Præposuit itaque eis magistros operum, ut affligerent eos oneribus : ædificaveruntque urbes tabernaculorum Pharaoni, Phithom et Ramesses.

KJV ¹² But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

VULC ¹² Quantoque opprimebant eos, tanto magis multiplicabantur, et crescebant :

KJV ¹³ And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:

VULC ¹³ oderantque filios Israël Ægyptii, et affligebant illudentes eis,

KJV ¹⁴ And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

VULC ¹⁴ atque ad amaritudinem perducebant vitam eorum operibus duris luti et lateris, omnique famulatu, quo in terræ operibus premebantur.

KJV ¹⁵ And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

VULC ¹⁵ Dixit autem rex Ægypti obstetricibus Hebræorum, quarum una vocabatur Sephora, altera Phua,

KJV ¹⁶ And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

VULC ¹⁶ præcipiens eis : Quando obstetricabitis Hebræas, et partus tempus advenerit : si masculus fuerit, interficite eum : si femina, reservate.

KJV ¹⁷ But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

VULC ¹⁷ Timuerunt autem obstetrices Deum, et non fecerunt juxta præceptum regis Ægypti, sed conservabant mares.

KJV ¹⁸ And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

VULC ¹⁸ Quibus ad se accersitis, rex ait : Quidnam est hoc quod facere voluistis, ut pueros servaretis ?

KJV ¹⁹ And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

VULC ¹⁹ Quæ responderunt : Non sunt Hebrææ sicut ægyptiæ mulieres : ipsæ enim obstetricandi habent scientiam, et priusquam veniamus ad eas, pariunt.

KJV ²⁰ Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

VULC ²⁰ Bene ergo fecit Deus obstetricibus : et crevit populus, confortatusque est nimis.

KJV ²¹ And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

VULC ²¹ Et quia timuerunt obstetrices Deum, ædificavit eis domos.

KJV ²² And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

KJV ¹ And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.

KJV ² And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

KJV ³ And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.

VULC ³ Cumque jam celare non posset, sumpsit fiscellam scirpeam, et linivit eam bitumine ac pice : posuitque intus infantulum, et exposuit eum in carecto ripæ fluminis,

KJV ⁴ And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.

VULC ⁴ stante procul sorore ejus, et considerante eventum rei.

KJV ⁵ And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.

KJV ⁶ And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.

KJV ⁷ Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?

KJV ⁸ And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother.

KJV ⁹ And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the women took the child, and nursed it.

VULC ⁹ Ad quam locuta filia Pharaonis : Accipe, ait, puerum istum, et nutri mihi : ego dabo tibi mercedem tuam. Suscepit mulier, et nutrivit puerum : adultumque tradidit filiæ Pharaonis.

KJV ¹⁰ And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

KJV ¹⁴ And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

KJV ¹⁹ And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.

KJV ²⁰ And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.

KJV ²¹ And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

KJV ²² And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

KJV ²³ And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

KJV ¹ Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

KJV ² And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

KJV ³ And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

KJV ⁴ And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

KJV ⁵ And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

KJV ³ And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.

VULC ³ Dixitque Dominus : Projice eam in terram. Projecit, et versa est in colubrum, ita ut fugeret Moyses.

KJV ⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:

VULC ⁴ Dixitque Dominus : Extende manum tuam, et apprehende caudam ejus. Extendit, et tenuit, versaque est in virgam.

KJV ⁵ That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

VULC ⁵ Ut credant, inquit, quod apparuerit tibi Dominus Deus patrum suorum, Deus Abraham, Deus Isaac et Deus Jacob.

KJV ⁶ And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.

KJV ⁸ And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

VULC ⁸ Si non crediderint, inquit, tibi, neque audierint sermonem signi prioris, credent verbo signi sequentis.

KJV ⁹ And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

KJV ¹⁰ And Moses said unto the LORD, O my LORD, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

KJV ¹⁴ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.

KJV ¹⁵ And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.

KJV ²⁷ And the LORD said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him.

KJV ³¹ And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.

KJV ¹ And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

VULC ⁷ Nequaquam ultra dabitis paleas populo ad conficiendos lateres, sicut prius : sed ipsi vadant, et colligant stipulas.

KJV ⁸ And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

VULC ⁸ Et mensuram laterum, quam prius faciebant, imponetis super eos, nec minuetis quidquam : vacant enim, et idcirco vociferantur, dicentes : Eamus, et sacrificemus Deo nostro.

KJV ⁹ Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

KJV ¹⁰ And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.

KJV ¹¹ Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished.

KJV ¹² So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

KJV ¹³ And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.

VULC ¹³ Præfecti quoque operum instabant, dicentes : Complete opus vestrum quotidie, ut prius facere solebatis quando dabantur vobis paleæ.

KJV ¹⁴ And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

KJV ¹⁵ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?

KJV ¹⁶ There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.

KJV ¹⁹ And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.

VULC ¹⁹ Videbantque se præpositi filiorum Israël in malo, eo quod diceretur eis : Non minuetur quidquam de lateribus per singulos dies.

KJV ²⁰ And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:

VULC ²⁰ Occurreruntque Moysi et Aaron, qui stabant ex adverso, egredientibus a Pharaone :

KJV ²¹ And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

VULC ²¹ et dixerunt ad eos : Videat Dominus et judicet, quoniam fœtere fecistis odorem nostrum coram Pharaone et servis ejus, et præbuistis ei gladium, ut occideret nos.

KJV ²² And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, LORD, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

VULC ²² Reversusque est Moyses ad Dominum, et ait : Domine, cur afflixisti populum istum ? quare misisti me ?

KJV ²³ For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.
