¹ Puis, ayant appelé ses douze disciples, il leur donna pouvoir sur les esprits impurs, afin de les chasser et de guérir toute maladie et toute infirmité. ² Voici les noms des douze apôtres : le premier, Simon, dit Pierre, et André son frère ; Jacques fils de Zébédée, et Jean son frère ; ³ Philippe et Barthélemy ; Thomas et Matthieu, le publicain ; Jacques fils d'Alphée et Thaddée ; ⁴ Simon le Zélote et Judas l'Iscariote, celui qui le trahit. ⁵ Ce sont ces douze que Jésus envoya, après leur avoir donné ces instructions : "n'allez point vers les Gentils, et n'entrez dans aucune ville des Samaritains ; ⁶ allez plutôt aux brebis perdues de la maison d'Israël. ⁷ Sur votre chemin, annoncez ceci : "le royaume des cieux est proche." ⁸ Guérissez les malades, ressuscitez les morts, purifiez les lépreux, chassez les démons : vous avez reçu gratuitement, donnez gratuitement. ⁹ Ne vous procurez ni or, ni argent, ni petite monnaie pour vos ceintures, ¹⁰ ni besace pour la route, ni deux tuniques, ni sandales, ni bâton ; car l'ouvrier mérite sa nourriture. ¹¹ En quelque ville ou bourg que vous entriez, informez-vous qui y est honorable, et demeurez là jusqu'à votre départ. ¹² En entrant dans la maison, saluez-la ; ¹³ et si la maison en est digne, que votre paix vienne sur elle ; mais si elle n'est pas digne, que votre paix vous revienne. ¹⁴ Si l'on refuse de vous recevoir et d'écouter vos paroles, sortez de cette maison ou de cette ville en secouant la poussière de vos pieds. ¹⁵ Je vous le dis en vérité : il y aura moins de rigueur, au jour du jugement, pour le pays de Sodome et de Gomorrhe que pour cette ville. ¹⁶ Voici que je vous envoie comme des brebis au milieu des loups : soyez donc prudents comme les serpents, et simples comme les colombes. ¹⁷ Tenez-vous en garde contre les hommes, car ils vous livreront aux sanhédrins et vous flagelleront dans leurs synagogues. ¹⁸ Vous serez traduits à cause de moi devant gouverneurs et rois, en témoignage pour eux et les Gentils. ¹⁹ Lorsqu'on vous livrera, ne vous préoccupez ni de la manière dont vous parlerez, ni de ce que vous aurez à dire : ce que vous aurez à dire vous sera donné à l'heure même. ²⁰ Car ce n'est pas vous qui parlerez, c'est l'Esprit de votre Père qui parlera en vous. ²¹ Le frère livrera son frère à la mort, et le père son enfant, et les enfants s'élèveront contre leurs parents et les feront mettre à mort. ²² Vous serez en haine à tous à cause de mon nom ; mais celui qui persévérera jusqu'à la fin, celui-là sera sauvé. ²³ Lorsqu'on vous poursuivra dans cette ville, fuyez dans une autre. En vérité, je vous le dis, vous n'aurez pas achevé (de parcourir) les villes d'Israël ; avant que le Fils de l'homme ne soit venu. ²⁴ Il n'y a pas de disciple au-dessus du maître, ni de serviteur au-dessus de son seigneur. ²⁵ Il suffit au disciple d'être comme son maître, et au serviteur comme son seigneur. S'ils ont appelé le maître de maison Béelzéboul, combien plus les gens de la maison ! ²⁶ Ne les craignez donc point : car il n'y a rien de caché qui ne doive se découvrir, rien de secret qui ne doive être connu. ²⁷ Ce que je vous dis dans les ténèbres, dites-le au grand jour, et ce que vous entendez à l'oreille, publiez-le sur les toits. ²⁸ Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps, mais ne peuvent tuer l'âme ; craignez plutôt celui qui peut perdre l'âme et le corps dans la géhenne. ²⁹ Deux moineaux ne se vendent-ils pas un as ? Et pas un d'entre eux ne tombe sur la terre, sans (la permission de) votre Père. ³⁰ Quant à vous, même les cheveux de votre tête sont tous comptés. ³¹ Ne craignez donc point : vous valez, vous, plus que beaucoup de moineaux. ³² Celui donc qui me confessera devant les hommes, mai aussi je le confesserai devant mon Père qui est dans les cieux ; ³³ mais celui qui me reniera devant les hommes, moi aussi je le renierai devant mon Père qui est dans les cieux. ³⁴ Ne pensez pas que je sois venu apporter la paix sur la terre ; je suis venu apporter, non la paix, mais le glaive. ³⁵ Car je suis venu séparer le fils de son père, la fille de sa mère, et la bru de sa belle-mère ; ³⁶ et on aura pour ennemis les gens de sa propre maison. ³⁷ Celui qui aime son père ou sa mère plus que moi n'est pas digne de moi ; et celui qui aime son fils ou sa fille plus que moi n'est pas digne de moi. ³⁸ Celui qui ne prend pas sa croix et ne me suit pas, n'est pas digne de moi. ³⁹ Celui qui cherche à conserver sa vie, la perdra ; et celui qui perd sa vie à cause de moi, la retrouvera. ⁴⁰ Celui qui vous reçoit me reçoit, et celui qui me reçoit, reçoit celui qui m'a envoyé. ⁴¹ Celui qui reçoit un prophète en qualité de prophète, recevra une récompense de prophète ; et celui qui reçoit un juste en qualité de juste, recevra une récompense de juste. ⁴² Et quiconque donnera à boire seulement un verre d'eau fraîche à l'un de ces petits parce qu'il est disciple, je vous le dis en vérité, il ne perdra point sa récompense."

Matthieu 11

¹ Or, quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ses instructions à ses douze disciples, il partit de là pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes. ² Jean, dans sa prison, ayant entendu parler des oeuvres du Christ, lui envoya dire par ses disciples : ³ " Etes-vous celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ?" ⁴ Jésus leur répondit : "allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez : ⁵ les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont guéris, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, les pauvres sont évangélisés. ⁶ Heureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute !" ⁷ Comme ils s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire aux foules au sujet de Jean : ⁸ "Qu'êtes-vous allés voir au désert ? Un roseau agité par le vent ? Qu'êtes-vous donc allés voir ? Un homme vêtu d'(habits) somptueux ? Mais ceux qui portent des (habits) somptueux se trouvent dans les demeures des rois. ⁹ Mais qu'êtes-vous allés (voir) ? Voir un prophète ? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète. ¹⁰ C'est celui dont il est écrit : Voici que j'envoie mon messager en avant de vous, pour vous préparer la voie devant vous. ¹¹ En vérité, je vous le dis, parmi les fils de la femme, il ne s'en est pas levé de plus grand que Jean le Baptiste ; mais le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui. ¹² Depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu'à présent, le royaume des cieux est forcé, et ce sont les violents qui s'en emparent. ¹³ Car tous les prophètes et la Loi ont prophétisé jusqu'à Jean. ¹⁴ Et si vous voulez comprendre, lui-même est Élie qui doit venir. ¹⁵ Que celui qui a des oreilles entende ! ¹⁶ Mais à qui comparerai-je cette génération ? Elle est semblable à des enfants assis sur les places publiques, qui crient à leurs compagnons : ¹⁷ " Nous avons joué de la flûte pour vous, et vous n'avez point dansé ; nous avons chanté une lamentation, et vous n'avez point frappé (votre poitrine)." ¹⁸ Jean en effet est venu, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et ils disent : Il est possédé du démon. " ¹⁹ Le Fils de l'homme est venu, mangeant et buvant, et ils disent : "c'est un mangeur et un buveur de vin, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs. "Et la Sagesse a été reconnue juste par ses oeuvres." ²⁰ Alors il se mit à faire des reproches aux villes où il avait opéré le plus grand nombre de ses miracles, parce qu'elles n'avaient pas fait pénitence : ²¹ "Malheur à toi, Corozaïn ! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde ! Car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous avaient été faits dans Tyr et Sidon, il y a longtemps qu'elles auraient fait pénitence avec le sac et la cendre. ²² Aussi bien, je vous le dis, il y aura, au jour du jugement, moins de rigueur pour Tyr et Sidon que pour vous. ²³ Et toi, Capharnaüm, est-ce que tu seras élevée jusqu'au ciel ? Tu seras abaissée jusqu'aux enfers ; car si les miracles qui ont été faits dans tes murs, avaient été faits dans Sodome, elle serait restée debout jusqu'à ce jour. ²⁴ Du reste, je te le dis, il y aura, au jour du jugement, moins de rigueur pour le pays de Sodome que pour toi." ²⁵ En ce temps-là, Jésus prit la parole et dit : "Je vous bénis, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que vous avez caché ces choses aux sages et aux prudents, et les avez révélées aux simples. ²⁶ Oui, Père, car tel fut votre bon plaisir. ²⁷ Toutes choses m'ont été remises par mon Père ; et personne ne connaît le Fils, si ce n'est le Père, et personne ne connaît le Père, si ce n'est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils aura bien voulu le révéler. ²⁸ Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et ployez sous le fardeau, et je vous soulagerai. ²⁹ Prenez sur vous mon joug, et recevez mes leçons : je suis doux et humble de coeur ; et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes, ³⁰ car mon joug est doux et mon fardeau léger."

Matthieu 12

¹ En ce temps-là, Jésus traversait des moissons un jour de sabbat. Ses disciples, ayant faim, se mirent à arracher des épis et à manger. ² Les Pharisiens, voyant cela, lui dirent : "vos disciples font une chose qu'il n'est pas permis de faire un jour de sabbat." ³ Mais il leur dit : "n'avez-vous pas lu ce que fit David, lorsqu'il eut faim, ainsi que ceux qui étaient avec lui : ⁴ comme il entra dans la maison de Dieu et mangea les pains de proposition, qu'il ne lui était pas permis de manger, non plus qu'à ceux qui étaient avec lui, mais aux prêtres seuls ? ⁵ Ou n'avez-vous pas lu dans la Loi que, le jour du sabbat, les prêtes, dans le temple violent le sabbat sans se rentre coupables ? ⁶ Or, je vous dis qu'il y a ici plus grand que le temple. ⁷ Si vous aviez compris ce que veut dire : Je veux la miséricorde et non le sacrifice, vous n'auriez pas condamné des innocents. ⁸ En effet le Fils de l'homme est maître du sabbat." ⁹ Et, ayant quitté ce lieu, il s'en vint à leur synagogue. ¹⁰ Or, il se trouvait (là) un homme qui avait une main sèche, et ils lui demandèrent : "est-il permis de guérir, le jour du sabbat ?" pour pouvoir l'accuser. ¹¹ Il leur dit : "quel sera celui d'entre vous, qui n'ayant qu'une brebis, si elle tombe dans une fosse un jour de sabbat, ne la prendra pour la retirer ? ¹² Or, combien un homme vaut plus qu'une brebis ! Il est donc permis de faire le bien le jour du sabbat." ¹³ Alors il dit à l'homme : étends la main." Il l'étendit, et elle redevint saine comme l'autre. ¹⁴ Les Pharisiens, étant sortis, prirent une délibération contre lui sur les moyens de le perdre. ¹⁵ Mais Jésus en ayant eu connaissance, s'éloigna de ces lieux. Et des [foules] nombreuses le suivirent, et il les guérit tous. ¹⁶ Et il leur commanda avec force de ne pas le faire connaître. ¹⁷ (C'était) afin que s'accomplît la parole du prophète Isaïe : ¹⁸ Voici mon serviteur que j'ai choisi, mon bien-aimé en qui mon âme se complaît. Je ferai reposer sur lui mon Esprit, et il annoncera le jugement aux nations. ¹⁹ Il ne disputera point, il ne criera point, et nul n'entendra sa voix sur les places publiques. ²⁰ Il ne brisera point le roseau froissé et n'éteindra point la mèche qui fume encore, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait fait triompher le jugement ; ²¹ et en son nom les nations mettront leur espérance. ²² On lui amena alors un possédé aveugle et muet, et il le guérit, de sorte que le muet parlait et voyait. ²³ Et toutes les foules, saisies d'étonnement, disaient : "n'est-ce pas là le fils de David ?" ²⁴ Mais les Pharisiens, entendant cela, dirent : "il ne chasse les démons que par Béelzéboul, chef des démons." ²⁵ Jésus, connaissant leurs pensées, leur dit : "tout royaume divisé contre lui-même va à la ruine, et toute ville ou maison divisée contre elle-même ne pourra subsister. ²⁶ Si Satan chasse Satan, il est divisé contre lui-même : comment donc son royaume pourra-t-il subsister ? ²⁷ Et si moi je chasse les démons par Béelzéboul, par qui vos fils les chassent-ils ? C'est pourquoi ils seront eux-mêmes vos juges. ²⁸ Mais si c'est par l'Esprit de Dieu que je chasse les démons, le royaume de Dieu est donc arrivé à vous. ²⁹ Ou bien, comment quelqu'un peut-il entrer dans la maison de l'homme fort et enlever ses meubles, sans avoir auparavant lié l'homme fort ? Alors seulement il pillera sa maison. ³⁰ Qui n'est pas avec moi est contre moi, et qui n'amasse pas avec moi disperse. ³¹ C'est pourquoi je vous dis : tout péché, tout blasphème sera remis aux hommes, mais le blasphème contre l'Esprit ne sera pas remis. ³² Et pour qui aura parlé contre le Fils de l'homme, il y aura rémission ; mais pour qui aura parlé contre l'Esprit-Saint, il n'y aura de rémission ni dans ce siècle, ni dans le siècle à venir. ³³ Ou admettez que l'arbre est bon, et que son fruit est bon ; ou admettez que l'arbre est mauvais, et que son fruit est mauvais : car c'est au fruit qu'on connaît l'arbre. ³⁴ Race de vipères, comment pourriez-vous dire de bonnes paroles, étant mauvais ? Car la bouche parle de l'abondance du coeur. ³⁵ L'homme bon tire de son trésor de bonté des choses bonnes, et l'homme mauvais, de son trésor de malice, tire des choses mauvaises. ³⁶ Je vous le dis : au jour du jugement, les hommes rendront compte de toute parole vaine qu'ils auront dite. ³⁷ C'est en effet d'après tes paroles que tu seras déclaré juste, et d'après tes paroles que tu seras condamné." ³⁸ Alors quelques-uns des scribes et des Pharisiens prirent la parole et dirent : "Maître, nous voudrions voir un signe de vous." ³⁹ Il leur répondit : "une génération mauvaise et adultère réclame un signe : il ne lui sera donné d'autre signe que le signe du prophète Jonas. ⁴⁰ Car de même que Jonas fut trois jours et trois nuits dans le ventre du poisson, ainsi le Fils de l'homme sera dans le sein de la terre trois jours et trois nuits. ⁴¹ Les hommes de Ninive se dresseront, au (jour du) jugement, avec cette génération et la feront condamner, car ils ont fait pénitence à la prédication de Jonas, et il y a ici plus que Jonas. ⁴² La reine du Midi se lèvera au (jour du) jugement, avec cette génération et la fera condamner, car elle est venue des extrémités de la terre pour entendre la sagesse de Salomon, et il y a ici plus que Salomon. ⁴³ Lorsque l'esprit impur est sorti d'un homme, il va par des lieux arides, cherchant du repos, et il n'en trouve point. ⁴⁴ Alors il dit : "je retournerai dans ma maison, d'où je suis sorti." Et revenu, il la trouve libre, nettoyée et ornée. ⁴⁵ Alors il s'en va prendre avec lui sept autres esprits plus mauvais que lui, et, étant entrés, ils y fixent leur demeure, et le dernier état de cet homme devient pire que le premier. Ainsi en sera-t-il pour cette génération mauvaise." ⁴⁶ Comme il parlait encore aux foules, voici que sa mère et ses frères se tenaient dehors, cherchant à lui parler. ⁴⁷ Quelqu'un lui dit : "voici votre mère et vos frères qui se tiennent dehors, et ils cherchent à vous parler." ⁴⁸ Il répondit à l'homme qui lui disait cela : "qui est ma mère et qui sont mes frères ?" ⁴⁹ Et étendant la main vers ses disciples, il dit : "voici ma mère et mes frères. ⁵⁰ Car quiconque fait la volonté de mon Père qui est dans les cieux, celui-là est pour moi frère, soeur et mère. "

Matthieu 13

¹ En ce jour là, Jésus sortit de la maison et s'assit au bord de la mer. ² Des foules s'assemblèrent autour de lui si nombreuses qu'il monta dans une barque, où il s'assit, tandis que toute la foule se tenait sur le rivage. ³ Et il leur parla de beaucoup de choses en paraboles, disant : "voici que le semeur sortit pour semer. ⁴ Et pendant qu'il semait, des (grains) tombèrent le long du chemin, et les oiseaux vinrent et les mangèrent. ⁵ D'autres tombèrent sur les endroits pierreux, où ils n'avaient pas beaucoup de terre, et ils levèrent aussitôt, parce que la terre était peu profonde ; ⁶ mais, le soleil s'étant levé, ils furent brûlés et, parce qu'ils n'avaient pas de racine, ils se desséchèrent. ⁷ D'autres tombèrent parmi les épines, et les épines montèrent et les étouffèrent. ⁸ D'autres tombèrent dans la bonne terre, et ils donnèrent du fruit, l'un cent, l'autre soixante, l'autre trente. ⁹ Que celui qui a des oreilles entende !" ¹⁰ Alors les disciples s'approchant lui dirent : " Pourquoi leur parlez-vous en paraboles ?" ¹¹ Il leur répondit : "à vous, il a été donné de connaître les mystères du royaume des cieux ; mais à eux, cela n'a pas été donné. ¹² Car on donnera à celui qui a, et il y aura (pour lui) surabondance ; mais à celui qui n'a pas, on lui ôtera même ce qu'il a. ¹³ C'est pourquoi je leur parle en paraboles, parce que voyant ils ne voient pas, et entendant ils n'entendent ni ne comprennent. ¹⁴ Pour eux s'accomplit la prophétie d'Isaïe qui dit : Vous entendrez de vos oreilles et vous ne comprendrez point ; vous verrez de vos yeux, et vous ne verrez point. ¹⁵ Car le coeur de ce peuple s'est épaissi, et ils sont durs d'oreilles, et ils ferment leurs yeux : de peur que leurs yeux ne voient, que leurs oreilles n'entendent, que leur coeur ne comprenne, qu'ils ne se convertissent et que je ne les guérisse. ¹⁶ Pour vous, heureux vos yeux parce qu'ils voient, et vos oreilles parce qu'elles entendent ! ¹⁷ Je vous le dis en vérité, beaucoup de prophètes et de justes ont désiré voir ce que vous voyez, et ils ne l'ont pas vu ; entendre ce que vous entendez, et ils ne l'ont pas entendu. ¹⁸ Vous donc, écoutez (le sens de) la parabole du semeur : ¹⁹ Quiconque entend la parole du royaume et ne la comprend pas, le Malin vient, et il enlève ce qui a été semé dans son coeur : c'est (le grain) qui a été semé le long du chemin. ²⁰ Celui qui a été semé sur des endroits pierreux, c'est celui qui entend la parole et la reçoit aussitôt avec joie ; ²¹ mais il n'y a pas en lui de racines et il est éphémère ; des que survient la tribulation ou la persécution à cause de la parole, aussitôt il trébuche. ²² Celui qui a été semé dans les épines, c'est celui qui entend la parole, mais les sollicitudes du siècle et la séduction des richesses étouffent la parole, et elle devient stérile. ²³ Celui qui a été semé dans la bonne terre, c'est celui qui entend la parole et la comprend ; il porte du fruit, et donne l'un cent, l'autre soixante, l'autre trente (pour un). ²⁴ Il leur proposa une autre parabole, disant : "le royaume des cieux est semblable à un homme qui avait semé de bonne semence dans son champ. ²⁵ Or, pendant que les hommes dormaient, son ennemi vint et sema de l'ivraie au milieu du froment par dessus, et il s'en alla. ²⁶ Quand l'herbe eut poussé et donné son fruit, alors apparut aussi l'ivraie. ²⁷ Et les serviteurs du maître de maison vinrent lui dire : "Maître, n'avez-vous pas semé de bonne semence dans votre champ ? D'où (vient) donc qu'il s'y trouve de l'ivraie ? " ²⁸ Il leur dit : "c'est un ennemi qui a fait cela. "Les serviteurs lui disent : "voulez-vous que nous allions la ramasser ? ‒ ²⁹ Non, dit-il, de peur qu'en ramassant l'ivraie vous n'arrachiez aussi le froment. ³⁰ Laissez croître ensemble l'un et l'autre jusqu'à la moisson, et au temps de la moisson je dirai aux moissonneurs : Ramassez d'abord l'ivraie, et liez-la en bottes pour la brûler ; quand au froment, amassez-le dans mon grenier." ³¹ Il leur proposa une autre parabole, disant : "le royaume de cieux est semblable à un grain de sénevé, qu'un homme a pris et a semé dans son champ. ³² C'est la plus petite de toutes les semences ; mais, lorsqu'il a poussé, il est plus grand que les plantes potagères et devient un arbre, de sorte que les oiseaux du ciel viennent nicher dans ses branches." ³³ Il leur dit une autre parabole : "le royaume des cieux est semblable au levain qu'une femme prit et mélangea dans trois mesures de farine, jusqu'à ce que le tout eût fermenté." ³⁴ Jésus dit aux foules toutes ces choses en paraboles, et il ne leur disait rien sans parabole, ³⁵ pour que s'accomplît la parole dite par le prophète : J'ouvrirai ma bouche en paraboles, je proférerai des choses cachées depuis la création du monde. ³⁶ Alors, ayant quitté les foules, il revint dans la maison, et ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui et dirent : "expliquez-nous la parabole de l'ivraie du champ." ³⁷ Il répondit : "celui qui sème la bonne semence, c'est le Fils de l'homme ; ³⁸ le champ, c'est le monde ; la bonne semence, ce sont les fils du royaume ; l'ivraie, ce sont les fils du Malin ; ³⁹ l'ennemi qui l'a semée, c'est le diable ; la moisson, c'est consommation du siècle ; les moissonneurs, ce sont les anges. ⁴⁰ Comme on ramasse l'ivraie et qu'on la brûle dans le feu, ainsi en sera-t-il à la consommation du siècle. ⁴¹ Le Fils de l'homme enverra ses anges, et ils enlèveront de son royaume tous les scandales et ceux qui commettent l'iniquité, ⁴² et ils les jetteront dans la fournaise du feu : c'est là qu'il y aura les pleurs et le grincement de dents. ⁴³ Alors les justes resplendiront comme le soleil dans le royaume de leur Père. Que celui qui a des oreilles entende ! ⁴⁴ Le royaume des cieux est semblable à un trésor caché dans un champ ; un homme, l'ayant trouvé le recacha et, dans sa joie, s'en alla vendre tout ce qu'il avait et acheta ce champ. ⁴⁵ Encore : le royaume des cieux est semblable à un marchand qui cherchait de belles perles. ⁴⁶ Ayant trouvé une perle de grand prix, il s'en alla vendre tout ce qu'il avait, et il l'acheta. ⁴⁷ encore : le royaume des cieux est semblable à un filet qu'on a jeté dans la mer et qui a ramené (des poissons) de toute sorte. ⁴⁸ Lorsqu'il fut rempli, (les pêcheurs) le tirèrent au rivage et, s'étant assis, ils recueillirent les bons dans des paniers et rejetèrent les mauvais. ⁴⁹ Ainsi en sera-t-il à la consommation du siècle : les anges sortiront et sépareront les méchants d'avec les justes, ⁵⁰ et ils les jetteront dans la fournaise du feu ; c'est là qu'il y aura les pleurs et le grincement de dents. ⁵¹ Avez-vous compris toutes ces choses ?" ⁵² Ils lui dirent : "oui." Et il leur dit : "c'est pour cela que tout scribe devenu disciple du royaume des cieux ressemble à un maître de maison qui tire de son trésor du neuf et du vieux." ⁵³ Or, après que Jésus eut achevé ces paraboles, il partit de là. ⁵⁴ Etant venu dans sa patrie, il les enseignait dans leur synagogue, si bien que, saisis d'étonnement, ils disaient : "d'où lui viennent cette science et ces miracles ? ⁵⁵ N'est-ce pas le fils du charpentier ? Sa mère ne s'appelle-t-elle pas Marie, et ses frères Jacques, Joseph, Simon et Judas ? ⁵⁶ Et ses soeurs, ne sont-elles pas toutes chez nous ? D'où lui vient donc tout cela` ?" ⁵⁷ Et il était pour eux une pierre d'achoppement. Mais Jésus leur dit : "un prophète n'est sans honneur que dans sa patrie et dans sa maison." ⁵⁸ Et il ne fit pas là beaucoup de miracles à cause de leur incrédulité.

Matthieu 14

¹ En ce temps-là, Hérode le tétrarque apprit ce qui se publiait de Jésus, ² et il dit à ses courtisans : "c'est Jean-Baptise !    ⁷ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? ⁸ But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. ⁹ But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. ¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. ¹⁵ He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

But wisdom is justified of her children. ²⁰ Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: ²¹ Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ²² But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. ²³ And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. ²⁴ But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
   ²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. ²⁶ Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. ²⁷ All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. ²⁸ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. ¹¹ And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? ¹² How much then is a man better than a sheep?    ¹⁴ Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. ¹⁵ But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; ¹⁶ And charged them that they should not make him known: ¹⁷ That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, ¹⁸ Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. ¹⁹ He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. ²⁰ A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. ²¹ And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
   ²² Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. ²³ And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? ²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. ²⁵ And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: ²⁶ And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? ²⁷ And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. ²⁸ But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. ²⁹ Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. ³⁰ He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. ³¹ Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. ³² And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. ³³ Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. ³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ³⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. ³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
   ³⁸ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. ³⁹ But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: ⁴⁰ For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. ⁴² The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. ⁴³ When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. ⁴⁴ Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. ⁴⁵ Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
   ⁴⁶ While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. ⁴⁷ Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. ⁴⁸ But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? ⁴⁹ And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! ⁵⁰ For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

   ¹ The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. ² And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. ³ And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; ⁴ And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: ⁵ Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: ⁶ And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. ⁷ And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: ⁸ But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. ⁹ Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁰ And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. ¹² For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. ¹³ Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: ¹⁵ For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. ¹⁷ For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. ¹⁸ Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. ¹⁹ When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. ²⁰ But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; ²¹ Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. ²² He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. ²³ But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
   ²⁴ Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: ²⁵ But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. ²⁶ But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. ²⁷ So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? ²⁸ He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? ²⁹ But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. ³⁰ Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. ³¹ Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: ³² Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. ³³ Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. ³⁴ All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: ³⁵ That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. ³⁶ Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. ³⁷ He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; ³⁸ The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; ³⁹ The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. ⁴⁰ As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. ⁴¹ The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; ⁴² And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. ⁴³ Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.    ⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. ⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: ⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. ⁴⁷ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: ⁴⁸ Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. ⁴⁹ So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, ⁵⁰ And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. ⁵¹ Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things?    ⁵³ And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. ⁵⁴ And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? ⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? ⁵⁶ And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? ⁵⁷ And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. ⁵⁸ And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

   ¹ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, ² And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. ³ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. ⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. ⁵ And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. ⁶ But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. ⁷ Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. ⁸ And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. ⁹ And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. ¹⁰ And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. ¹¹ And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. ¹² And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
   ¹³ When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. ¹⁴ And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. ¹⁵ And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. ¹⁶ But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. ¹⁷ And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. ¹⁸ He said, Bring them hither to me. ¹⁹ And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. ²⁰ And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
