   ¹ Et ayant appelé ses douze disciples, il leur donna autorité sur les esprits impurs, pour les chasser et pour guérir toute maladie et toute langueur. ² Or, ce sont ici les noms des douze apôtres : le premier, Simon, nommé Pierre, et André son frère ; Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean son frère ; ³ Philippe et Barthélemi ; Thomas et Matthieu le péager ; Jacques, fils d'Alphée, et Lebbée ; ⁴ Simon le Cananite et Judas Iscariot, celui qui le livra. ⁵ Ce sont ces douze que Jésus envoya, après leur avoir donné ses ordres, en disant : N'allez point vers les païens et n'entrez pas dans une ville des Samaritains ; ⁶ mais allez plutôt vers les brebis perdues de la maison d'Israël. ⁷ Et quand vous serez en route, prêchez, disant : Le royaume des cieux s'est approché. ⁸ Guérissez les malades, ressuscitez les morts, purifiez les lépreux, chassez les démons. Vous avez reçu gratuitement, donnez gratuitement. ⁹ Ne vous procurez ni or, ni argent, ni cuivre dans vos ceintures, ¹⁰ ni sac pour le chemin, ni deux tuniques, ni chaussures, ni bâton ; car l'ouvrier est digne de sa nourriture. ¹¹ Mais dans quelque ville ou village que vous entriez, informez-vous qui y est digne, et demeurez là jusqu'à ce que vous partiez. ¹² Et en entrant dans la maison, saluez-la. ¹³ Et si la maison est digne, que votre paix vienne sur elle ; mais si elle n'est pas digne, que votre paix retourne à vous. ¹⁴ Et lorsqu'on ne vous recevra pas et n'écoutera pas vos paroles, en sortant de cette maison ou de cette ville, secouez la poussière de vos pieds. ¹⁵ En vérité, je vous le dis, le sort du pays de Sodome et de Gomorrhe sera plus supportable, au jour du jugement, que celui de cette ville-là.
   ¹⁶ Voici, je vous envoie comme des brebis au milieu des loups ; soyez donc prudents comme les serpents et simples comme les colombes. ¹⁷ Et soyez en garde contre les hommes ; car ils vous livreront aux tribunaux et ils vous flagelleront dans leurs synagogues ; ¹⁸ et vous serez menés même devant des gouverneurs et des rois, à cause de moi, pour leur être en témoignage, à eux et aux païens. ¹⁹ Mais quand ils vous livreront, ne soyez point en souci de la manière dont vous parlerez ou de ce que vous direz ; car ce que vous aurez à dire vous sera donné à l'heure même, ²⁰ car ce n'est pas vous qui parlez ; mais c'est l'Esprit de votre Père qui parle en vous. ²¹ Or un frère livrera son frère à la mort, et un père son enfant, et les enfants se soulèveront contre leurs parents et les feront mourir ; ²² et vous serez haïs de tous à cause de mon nom ; mais celui qui aura persévéré jusqu'à la fin, celui-là sera sauvé. ²³ Or, quand ils vous persécuteront dans une ville, fuyez dans une autre ; car en vérité je vous le dis, vous n'aurez pas achevé de parcourir les villes d'Israël que le fils de l'homme sera venu.
   ²⁴ Un disciple n'est pas au-dessus du maître, ni un serviteur au-dessus de son seigneur. ²⁵ Il suffit au disciple d'être comme son maître, et au serviteur d'être comme son seigneur. S'ils ont nommé le maître de la maison Béelzébul, combien plus les gens de sa maison ? ²⁶ Ne les craignez donc point ; car il n'y a rien de couvert qui ne doive être découvert, ni rien de caché qui ne doive être connu. ²⁷ Ce que je vous dis dans les ténèbres, dites-le dans la lumière ; et ce qui vous est dit à l'oreille, prêchez-le sur les maisons. ²⁸ Et ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps et qui ne peuvent tuer l'âme ; mais craignez plutôt celui qui peut perdre et l'âme et le corps dans la géhenne. ²⁹ Deux petits passereaux ne se vendent-ils pas pour un sou ? et pas un d'eux ne tombera en terre sans votre Père. ³⁰ Et pour vous, les cheveux mêmes de votre tête sont tous comptés. ³¹ Ne craignez donc point ; vous valez mieux que beaucoup de passereaux. ³² Tout homme donc qui me confessera devant les hommes, je le confesserai, moi aussi, devant mon Père qui est aux cieux. ³³ Mais quiconque me reniera devant les hommes, je le renierai, moi aussi, devant mon Père qui est aux cieux. ³⁴ Ne pensez pas que je sois venu apporter la paix sur la terre ; je ne suis pas venu apporter la paix, mais l'épée. ³⁵ Car je suis venu mettre la division entre un homme et son père, entre une fille et sa mère, entre une belle-fille et sa belle-mère ; ³⁶ et un homme aura pour ennemis les gens de sa maison. ³⁷ Celui qui aime père ou mère plus que moi, n'est pas digne de moi ; et celui qui aime fils ou fille plus que moi, n'est pas digne de moi. ³⁸ Et celui qui ne prend pas sa croix et ne me suit pas, n'est pas digne de moi. ³⁹ Celui qui aura trouvé sa vie, la perdra ; et celui qui aura perdu sa vie à cause de moi, la trouvera. ⁴⁰ Celui qui vous reçoit me reçoit, et celui qui me reçoit, reçoit celui qui m'a envoyé. ⁴¹ Celui qui reçoit un prophète, en qualité de prophète, recevra une récompense de prophète, et celui qui reçoit un juste, en qualité de juste, recevra une récompense de juste. ⁴² Et quiconque aura donné à boire seulement un verre d'eau froide à l'un de ces petits, en qualité de disciple, je vous dis en vérité qu'il ne perdra point sa récompense.

Matthieu 11

¹ Et il arriva, quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ses ordres à ses douze disciples, qu'il partit de là pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.
   ² Or Jean, ayant ouï parler dans la prison des oeuvres du Christ, lui envoya dire par ses disciples : ³ Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ? ⁴ Et Jésus répondant leur dit : Allez et rapportez à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez : ⁵ Les aveugles recouvrent la vue et les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés et les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent et l'Evangile est annoncé aux pauvres. ⁶ Et heureux est celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute !
   ⁷ Or, comme ils s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire aux foules au sujet de Jean : Qu'êtes-vous allés voir au désert ? Un roseau agité par le vent ? ⁸ Mais qu'êtes-vous allés voir ? Un homme vêtu de vêtements délicats ? Voilà, ceux qui portent des vêtements délicats sont dans les maisons des rois. ⁹ Mais qu'êtes-vous allés voir ? Un prophète ? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète. ¹⁰ C'est celui-ci de qui il est écrit : Voici, j'envoie mon messager devant ta face qui préparera ton chemin devant toi. ¹¹ En vérité, je vous le dis, entre ceux qui il sont nés de femme, il n'en a point été suscité de plus grand que Jean-Baptiste ; mais celui qui est plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui. ¹² Or, depuis les jours de Jean-Baptiste jusqu'à maintenant, le royaume des cieux est pris par la violence, et ce sont des violents qui le ravissent. ¹³ Car tous les prophètes et la loi ont prophétisé jusqu'à Jean ; ¹⁴ et si vous voulez recevoir ceci, il est cet Elie qui doit venir. ¹⁵ Que celui qui a des oreilles, entende !
   ¹⁶ Mais à qui comparerai-je cette génération ? Elle ressemble à des enfants assis dans les places publiques, qui crient aux autres, ¹⁷ et leur disent : Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez point dansé ; nous avons chanté des complaintes, et vous ne vous êtes point lamentés. ¹⁸ Car Jean est venu ne mangeant ni ne buvant ; et ils disent : Il a un démon. ¹⁹ Le Fils de l'homme est venu mangeant et buvant, et ils disent : Voici un mangeur et un buveur, un ami des péagers et des pécheurs. Mais la sagesse a été justifiée de la part de ses enfants.
   ²⁰ Alors il commença à faire des reproches aux villes dans lesquelles avaient eu lieu la plupart de ses miracles, parce qu'elles ne s'étaient point repenties. ²¹ Malheur à toi, Corazin ! malheur à toi, Bethsaïda ! car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous avaient été faits à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a longtemps qu'elles se seraient repenties avec le sac et la cendre. ²² C'est pourquoi je vous le dis : Tyr et Sidon seront au jour du jugement dans une condition plus supportable que vous. ²³ Et toi, Capernaüm, qui as été élevée jusqu'au ciel, tu seras abaissée jusqu'au séjour des morts ; car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de toi eussent été faits à Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd'hui. ²⁴ C'est pourquoi je vous dis que la terre de Sodome sera au jour du jugement dans une condition plus supportable que toi.
   ²⁵ En ce temps-là, Jésus prenant la parole dit : Je te loue, ô Père ! Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents, et de ce que tu les as révélées aux enfants. ²⁶ Oui, Père, parce que tel a été ton bon plaisir devant toi. ²⁷ Toutes choses m'ont été livrées par mon Père ; et nul ne connaît le Fils, si ce n'est le Père, et nul ne connaît le Père, si ce n'est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler.
   ²⁸ Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et chargés, et moi je vous soulagerai. ²⁹ Chargez-vous de mon joug, et apprenez de moi, parce que je suis doux et humble de coeur, et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes ; ³⁰ car mon joug est doux et mon fardeau est léger.

Matthieu 12

   ¹ En ce temps-là, Jésus passa par les blés un jour de sabbat ; or ses disciples eurent faim ; et ils se mirent à arracher des épis et à manger. ² Or les pharisiens, voyant cela, lui dirent : Voici, tes disciples font ce qu'il n'est pas permis de faire le jour du sabbat. ³ Mais il leur dit : N'avez-vous pas lu ce que fit David quand il eut faim, lui et ceux qui étaient avec lui : ⁴ comment il entra dans la maison de Dieu, et mangea les pains de proposition, qu'il ne lui était pas permis de manger, non plus qu'à ceux qui étaient avec lui, mais aux seuls sacrificateurs ? ⁵ N'avez-vous pas lu dans la loi que les jours de sabbat les sacrificateurs violent le sabbat dans le temple, et ne sont point coupables ? ⁶ Or je vous dis qu'il y a ici quelque chose de plus grand que le temple. ⁷ Et si vous saviez ce que signifie : Je veux la miséricorde et non le sacrifice, vous n'auriez pas condamné ceux qui ne sont point coupables. ⁸ Car le fils de l'homme est maître du sabbat.
   ⁹ Et étant parti de là, il vint dans leur synagogue. ¹⁰ Et voici, il s'y trouvait un homme qui avait une main sèche. Et ils l'interrogèrent disant : Est-il permis de guérir dans les jours de sabbat ? C'était afin de pouvoir l'accuser. ¹¹ Mais lui leur dit : Quel sera l'homme d'entre vous qui aura une seule brebis, et qui, si elle tombe dans une fosse le jour du sabbat, ne la saisira et ne l'en retirera pas ? ¹² Or, combien un homme ne vaut-il pas plus qu'une brebis ? Il est donc permis de faire du bien les jours de sabbat. ¹³ Alors il dit à l'homme : Etends ta main. Et il l'étendit ; et elle fut rendue saine comme l'autre. ¹⁴ Et les pharisiens étant sortis, tinrent conseil contre lui, afin de le faire périr. ¹⁵ Mais Jésus, l'ayant su, se retira de là. Et beaucoup de gens le suivirent, et il les guérit tous ; ¹⁶ et il leur défendit avec menaces de le faire connaître ; ¹⁷ afin que fût accompli ce qui avait été dit par Esaïe le prophète, disant : ¹⁸ Voici mon serviteur, que j'ai élu, mon bien-aimé, en qui mon âme a pris plaisir. Je mettrai mon Esprit sur lui, et il annoncera le jugement aux nations. ¹⁹ Il ne contestera point, et ne criera point, et l'on n'entendra point sa voix dans les rues. ²⁰ Il ne brisera point le roseau froissé, et il n'éteindra point le lumignon fumant, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait fait triompher le jugement ; ²¹ et les nations espéreront en son nom.
   ²² Alors lui fut amené un démoniaque aveugle et muet ; et il le guérit ; de sorte que l'aveugle et muet parlait et voyait. ²³ Et toute la foule fut stupéfaite, et elle disait : Celui-ci serait-il le fils de David ? ²⁴ Mais les pharisiens, entendant cela, dirent : Celui-ci ne chasse les démons que par Béelzébul, le prince des démons. ²⁵ Mais Jésus connaissant leurs pensées, leur dit : Tout royaume divisé contre lui-même est réduit en désert, et toute ville ou toute maison divisée contre elle-même ne subsistera pas. ²⁶ Et si Satan chasse Satan, il est divisé contre lui-même. Comment donc son royaume subsistera-t-il ? ²⁷ Et si c'est par Béelzébul que moi je chasse les démons, vos fils, par qui les chassent-ils ? C'est pourquoi ils seront eux-mêmes vos juges. ²⁸ Mais si c'est par l'Esprit de Dieu que moi je chasse les démons, le royaume de Dieu est donc parvenu jusqu'à vous. ²⁹ Ou comment quelqu'un peut-il entrer dans la maison de l'homme fort et piller son bien, s'il n'a auparavant lié l'homme fort ; et alors il pillera sa maison ? ³⁰ Celui qui n'est pas avec moi est contre moi, et celui qui n'assemble pas avec moi disperse. ³¹ C'est pourquoi je vous dis : Tout péché et tout blasphème sera pardonné aux hommes ; mais le blasphème contre l'Esprit ne sera point pardonné aux hommes. ³² Et si quelqu'un dit une parole contre le fils de l'homme, il lui sera pardonné ; mais si quelqu'un parle contre l'Esprit-Saint, il ne lui sera point pardonné ni dans ce siècle, ni dans celui qui est à venir. ³³ Ou faites l'arbre bon et son fruit bon ; ou faites l'arbre mauvais et son fruit mauvais, car au fruit on connaît l'arbre. ³⁴ Race de vipères, comment pouvez-vous dire de bonnes choses, étant mauvais ? Car de l'abondance du coeur la bouche parle. ³⁵ L'homme bon tire les bonnes choses du bon trésor ; et l'homme mauvais tire de mauvaises choses du mauvais trésor. ³⁶ Or je vous dis que toute parole oiseuse que les hommes auront prononcée, ils en rendront compte au jour du jugement ; ³⁷ car par tes paroles tu seras justifié, et par tes paroles tu seras condamné.
   ³⁸ Alors quelques-uns des scribes et des pharisiens lui répondirent, disant : Maître, nous voulons voir un signe de toi. ³⁹ Mais lui, répondant, leur dit : Une génération méchante et adultère recherche un signe ; mais il ne lui sera point donné de signe, si ce n'est le signe de Jonas le prophète. ⁴⁰ Car, comme Jonas fut dans le ventre du grand poisson trois jours et trois nuits, ainsi le fils de l'homme sera dans le sein de la terre trois jours et trois nuits. ⁴¹ Les hommes de Ninive se lèveront au jour du jugement avec cette génération, et la condamneront ; parce qu'ils se repentirent à la prédication de Jonas ; et voici, il y a ici plus que Jonas. ⁴² La reine du midi se lèvera au jour du jugement avec cette génération, et la condamnera ; car elle vint des extrémités de la terre pour entendre la sagesse de Salomon ; et voici, il y a ici plus que Salomon.
   ⁴³ Or, lorsque l'esprit impur est sorti de l'homme, il parcourt des lieux arides, cherchant du repos, et il n'en trouve point. ⁴⁴ Alors il dit : Je retournerai dans ma maison, d'où je suis sorti ; et étant venu, il la trouve vide, balayée et ornée. ⁴⁵ Alors il s'en va, et prend avec lui sept autres esprits plus méchants que lui, et étant entrés, ils habitent là ; et la dernière condition de cet homme-là est pire que la première. Il en sera de même aussi pour cette méchante génération.
   ⁴⁶ Comme il parlait encore aux foules, voici sa mère et ses frères se tenaient dehors, cherchant à lui parler. ⁴⁷ Et quelqu'un lui dit : Voilà, ta mère et tes frères se tiennent dehors, cherchant à te parler. ⁴⁸ Mais lui, répondant, dit à celui qui lui parlait : Qui est ma mère, et qui sont mes frères ? ⁴⁹ ? Et étendant sa main sur ses disciples, il dit : Voici ma mère et mes frères. ⁵⁰ Car quiconque fera la volonté de mon Père qui est dans les cieux, celui-là est mon frère, et ma soeur, et ma mère.

Matthieu 13

   ¹ Ce jour-là, Jésus étant sorti de la maison, s'assit au bord de la mer. ² Et de grandes foules s'assemblèrent auprès de lui, de sorte que, montant dans la barque, il s'y assit ; et toute la foule se tenait sur le rivage. ³ Et il leur parla en paraboles sur beaucoup de choses, disant : Voici, le semeur sortit pour semer ; ⁴ et comme il semait, une partie tomba le long du chemin, et les oiseaux vinrent et la mangèrent toute. ⁵ Une autre tomba sur des endroits rocailleux, où elle n'avait pas beaucoup de terre, et aussitôt elle leva, parce qu'elle n'avait pas une terre profonde. ⁶ Mais le soleil s'étant levé, elle fut brûlée, et parce qu'elle n'avait pas de racine, elle sécha. ⁷ Une autre tomba parmi les épines, et les épines montèrent et l'étouffèrent. ⁸ Et une autre tomba dans la bonne terre, et donna du fruit ; un grain cent, un autre soixante, et un autre trente. ⁹ Que celui qui a des oreilles, entende !
   ¹⁰ Et les disciples s'étant approchés, lui dirent : Pourquoi leur parles-tu en paraboles ? ¹¹ Et, répondant, il leur dit : Parce qu'il vous a été donné de connaître les mystères du royaume des cieux ; mais à eux, cela ne leur a pas été donné. ¹² Car à celui qui a, il sera donné, et il aura en abondance ; mais pour celui qui n'a pas, cela même qu'il a lui sera ôté. ¹³ C'est pourquoi je leur parle en paraboles : parce qu'en voyant ils ne voient point, et qu'en entendant ils n'entendent ni ne comprennent. ¹⁴ Et pour eux s'accomplit la prophétie d'Esaïe, qui dit : Vous entendrez de vos oreilles, et vous ne comprendrez point ; et en regardant, vous regarderez, et vous ne verrez point. ¹⁵ Car le coeur de ce peuple s'est engraissé ; et ils ont ouï dur de leurs oreilles, et ils ont fermé leurs yeux, de peur qu'ils ne voient des yeux, et qu'ils n'entendent des oreilles, et qu'ils ne comprennent du coeur, et qu'ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse. ¹⁶ Mais pour vous, heureux sont vos yeux, parce qu'ils voient, et vos oreilles, parce qu'elles entendent. ¹⁷ Car en vérité je vous dis que beaucoup de prophètes et de justes ont désiré voir ce que vous voyez, et ne l'ont pas vu, et entendre ce que vous entendez, et ne l'ont pas entendu.
   ¹⁸ Vous donc, écoutez la parabole du semeur. ¹⁹ Quiconque entend la parole du royaume, et ne la comprend pas, le malin vient, et ravit ce qui a été semé dans son coeur ; c'est celui qui a reçu la semence le long du chemin. ²⁰ Et celui qui a reçu la semence dans des endroits rocailleux, c'est celui qui entendant la parole, et la recevant aussitôt avec joie, ²¹ n'a cependant point de racine en lui-même, mais n'est que pour un temps ; et lorsque l'affliction ou la persécution survient à cause de la parole, il y trouve aussitôt une occasion de chute. ²² Et celui qui a reçu la semence parmi les épines, c'est celui qui entend la parole ; mais les soucis du siècle et la séduction des richesses étouffent la parole ; et elle devient infructueuse. ²³ Et celui qui a reçu la semence dans la bonne terre, c'est celui qui entend et comprend la parole, qui, par conséquent, porte du fruit, et un grain en produit cent, l'autre soixante, l'autre trente.
   ²⁴ Il leur proposa une autre parabole, disant : Le royaume des cieux est semblable à un homme qui a semé de bonne semence dans son champ. ²⁵ Mais, pendant que les hommes dormaient, son ennemi vint et sema de l'ivraie parmi le blé, et s'en alla. ²⁶ Or quand l'herbe eut poussé et eut produit du fruit, alors l'ivraie parut aussi. ²⁷ Et les serviteurs du maître de la maison vinrent à lui et lui dirent : Seigneur, n'as-tu pas semé de bonne semence dans ton champ ? D'où vient donc qu'il porte de l'ivraie ? ²⁸ Et il leur répondit : C'est un ennemi qui a fait cela. Et les serviteurs lui dirent : Veux-tu donc que nous allions la cueillir ? ²⁹ Mais il dit : Non, de peur qu'en cueillant l'ivraie, vous ne déraciniez le blé en même temps. ³⁰ Laissez-les croître tous deux ensemble jusqu'à la moisson ; et au temps de la moisson, je dirai aux moissonneurs : Cueillez premièrement l'ivraie, et liez-la en gerbes pour la brûler ; mais, quant au blé, amassez-le dans mon grenier.
   ³¹ Il leur proposa une autre parabole, disant : Le royaume des cieux est semblable à un grain de sénevé, qu'un homme a pris et semé dans son champ. ³² C'est bien la plus petite de toutes les semences, mais quand il a crû, il est plus grand que les légumes et devient un arbre, tellement que les oiseaux du ciel viennent et s'abritent dans ses branches. ³³ Il leur dit une autre parabole : Le royaume des cieux est semblable à du levain, qu'une femme a pris et caché parmi trois mesures de farine, jusqu'à ce que tout fût levé.
   ³⁴ Toutes ces choses, Jésus les dit en paraboles aux foules, et il ne leur disait rien sans parabole ; ³⁵ afin que fût accompli ce qui a été dit par le prophète : J'ouvrirai ma bouche en paraboles, je proclamerai des choses cachées depuis la fondation du monde.
   ³⁶ Alors, ayant renvoyé la foule, il entra dans la maison ; et ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui, disant : Explique-nous la parabole de l'ivraie du champ. ³⁷ Il répondit et dit : Celui qui sème la bonne semence, c'est le fils de l'homme. ³⁸ Le champ, c'est le monde. La bonne semence, ce sont les fils du royaume. L'ivraie, ce sont les fils du malin. ³⁹ L'ennemi qui l'a semée, c'est le diable. La moisson, c'est la consommation du temps ; et les moissonneurs sont les anges. ⁴⁰ Comme donc on arrache l'ivraie, et qu'on la brûle dans le feu, il en sera de même à la consommation du temps. ⁴¹ Le fils de l'homme enverra ses anges, qui arracheront de son royaume tous les scandales, et ceux qui font l'iniquité. ⁴² Et ils les jetteront dans la fournaise du feu ; là seront les pleurs et le grincement des dents. ⁴³ Alors les justes resplendiront comme le soleil dans le royaume de leur Père. Que celui qui a des oreilles entende !
   ⁴⁴ Le royaume des cieux est encore semblable à un trésor caché dans un champ, qu'un homme a trouvé, et qu'il a caché ; et de la joie qu'il en a, il s'en va, et vend tout ce qu'il a, et achète ce champ.
   ⁴⁵ Le royaume des cieux est encore semblable à un marchand qui cherche de belles perles ; ⁴⁶ et ayant trouvé une perle de grand prix, il s'en est allé, a vendu tout ce qu'il possédait, et l'a achetée.
   ⁴⁷ Le royaume des cieux est encore semblable à un filet qui a été jeté dans la mer, et qui a ramassé des poissons de toutes sortes ; ⁴⁸ et quand il fut rempli, les pêcheurs le tirèrent sur le rivage ; et s'étant assis, ils recueillirent dans des vases ce qui était bon, et jetèrent dehors ce qui était mauvais. ⁴⁹ Il en sera de même à la consommation du temps : les anges sortiront et sépareront les méchants du milieu des justes, ⁵⁰ et ils les jetteront dans la fournaise du feu ; là seront les pleurs et le grincement des dents. ⁵¹ Avez-vous compris toutes ces choses ? Ils lui répondirent : Oui. ⁵² Et il leur dit : C'est pourquoi tout scribe qui a été instruit pour le royaume des cieux est semblable à un maître de maison qui tire de son trésor des choses nouvelles et des choses anciennes.
   ⁵³ Et il arriva, lorsque Jésus eut achevé ces paraboles, qu'il partit de là. ⁵⁴ Et étant venu dans sa patrie, il les enseignait dans leur synagogue ; de sorte qu'ils étaient frappés d'étonnement, et qu'ils disaient : D'où viennent à celui-ci cette sagesse et ces miracles ? ⁵⁵ Celui-ci n'est-il pas le fils du charpentier ? Sa mère ne s'appelle-t-elle pas Marie, et ses frères, Jacques et Joseph et Simon et Jude ? ⁵⁶ Et ses soeurs ne sont-elles pas toutes parmi nous ? D'où lui viennent donc toutes ces choses ? ⁵⁷ Et il était pour eux une occasion de chute. Mais Jésus leur dit : Un prophète n'est méprisé que dans son pays et dans sa maison. ⁵⁸ Et il ne fit pas là beaucoup de miracles, à cause de leur incrédulité.

   ¹ And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. ² Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, ³ And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? ⁴ Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: ⁵ The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. ⁶ And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
   ⁷ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? ⁸ But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. ⁹ But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. ¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. ¹⁵ He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
   ¹⁶ But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, ¹⁷ And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. ¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. ¹⁹ The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. ²⁰ Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: ²¹ Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ²² But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. ²³ And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. ²⁴ But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
   ²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. ²⁶ Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. ²⁷ All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. ²⁸ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

   ¹ At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat. ² But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. ³ But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; ⁴ How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? ⁵ Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? ⁶ But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. ⁷ But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. ⁸ For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. ⁹ And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: ¹⁰ And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. ¹¹ And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? ¹² How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. ¹³ Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
   ¹⁴ Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. ¹⁵ But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; ¹⁶ And charged them that they should not make him known: ¹⁷ That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, ¹⁸ Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. ¹⁹ He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. ²⁰ A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. ²¹ And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
   ²² Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. ²³ And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? ²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. ²⁵ And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: ²⁶ And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? ²⁷ And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. ²⁸ But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. ²⁹ Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. ³⁰ He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. ³¹ Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. ³² And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. ³³ Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. ³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ³⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. ³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
   ³⁸ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. ³⁹ But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: ⁴⁰ For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. ⁴² The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. ⁴³ When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. ⁴⁴ Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. ⁴⁵ Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
   ⁴⁶ While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. ⁴⁷ Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. ⁴⁸ But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? ⁴⁹ And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! ⁵⁰ For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

   ¹ The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. ² And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. ³ And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; ⁴ And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: ⁵ Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: ⁶ And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. ⁷ And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: ⁸ But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. ⁹ Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁰ And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. ¹² For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. ¹³ Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: ¹⁵ For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. ¹⁷ For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. ¹⁸ Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. ¹⁹ When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. ²⁰ But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; ²¹ Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. ²² He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. ²³ But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
   ²⁴ Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: ²⁵ But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. ²⁶ But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. ²⁷ So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? ²⁸ He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? ²⁹ But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. ³⁰ Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. ³¹ Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: ³² Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. ³³ Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. ³⁴ All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: ³⁵ That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. ³⁶ Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. ³⁷ He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; ³⁸ The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; ³⁹ The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. ⁴⁰ As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. ⁴¹ The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; ⁴² And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. ⁴³ Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.    ⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. ⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: ⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. ⁴⁷ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: ⁴⁸ Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. ⁴⁹ So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, ⁵⁰ And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. ⁵¹ Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things?    ⁵³ And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. ⁵⁴ And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? ⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? ⁵⁶ And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? ⁵⁷ And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. ⁵⁸ And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

   ¹ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, ² And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. ³ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. ⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. ⁵ And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. ⁶ But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. ⁷ Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. ⁸ And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. ⁹ And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. ¹⁰ And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. ¹¹ And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. ¹² And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
   ¹³ When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. ¹⁴ And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. ¹⁵ And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. ¹⁶ But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. ¹⁷ And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. ¹⁸ He said, Bring them hither to me. ¹⁹ And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. ²⁰ And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
